Las Vegas ExtraInnings Complaints/DirecTV Question
Hi, this post is aimed at Las Vegans and anybody else out there blacked out of watching A's games because of illogical market boundaries. Though MLB promised to look into the matter last year, and the word I read was a proposal that required teams to either broadcast in a market, or lose exclusivity rights to a market if a year passed without broadcast was in the pipelines, nothing seemed to have come of it-- So it seems one more year of being blacked out!
I also have an additional question, and I'll feel really silly if I've been missing A's games because of this: If I get DirecTV, which offers Comcast Sports BayArea, will I be able to watch A's games? Or do they have some insane reason for blacking those out?
UPDATE: Upon further review I have found out that that because the A's have moved over to Comcast Sports California (and this must be old news to all you guys, of course), even though the package I get includes Comcast Sports Bay Area, I'll only get the Giants. Does anybody have any clue why Comcast Sports Bay Area is included in the Las Vegas market, but not Comcast California? Seriously, wtf.
UPDATE 2: Apparently I now love the policy, since DirecTV carries all those regional sports networks (though I do have to pay for Comcast California and FSN Arizona or whatever they have, sadly), I will get A's, Dodgers, Padres, D'Backs, Giants, and Angels without having to pay for Extra Innings. God Bless DirecTV. Unless it turns out those games are blacked out. Then I'll have to cry and wait to fork over a zillion dollars to get the Raiders in the fall.

I am close than you (Los Angeles)
And I get all the A’s games on Extra Innings with DirecTV. You obviously will not get A’s games straight through Comcast Sports BayArea because they are not your local team. DTV offers those channels, but pro sporting events are blacked out except your local one, which Im guessing for you would be Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket out of LA.
Bring back Hammer.
And therein lies the problem...
According to MLB rules, the A’s (along with the Diamondbacks, Giants, Dodgers, Angels, AND Padres) are all my local teams :-)
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
And it turns out as I noted above,
Comcast Bay Area is considered local for Giants (tho Warriors appear to be blacked out) and for some reason…probably due to contract and money between CSN and DirecTV, Comcast California isn’t included in the package.

People in eastern Montana are considered "local" for the Mariners. Insane.
Pitching and defense wins pennants, but offense sells tickets.
They're about as local as it gets...lol
Minnesota/Colorado maybe? Besides that…Go Mariners? lol

Wait.
Are you telling me that there are actually people in eastern Montana?

It probably won't happen, but...
I’d like to see MLB take a completely different stance on the whole issue (of local blackouts) than the other sports. MLB.com has done a good job of offering audio/video over the internet and over mobile phones. But when a business does not provide what a customer wants and at a reasonable price that they are willing to pay, the consumer could turn to unauthorized sources for the feeds. It’s like the music industry not offering digital downloads in the 90’s. Consumers will find a way, especially with the new technological advancements out there.
I’m not advocating anything illegal (I’m not condemning it either), but who can blame tech savvy blacked out fans from sharing streams of baseball games with each other when the official provider is unwilling? It’s probably really easy for fans to broadcast over the internet to other like-minded fans. And this wouldn’t hurt the original product (MLB) because ads would be broadcast as well. Advertisers wouldn’t be pissed off at all. The only companies that would be hurt in this scenario are the traditional media broadcasters that pay for their monopoly of baseball broadcasts, but don’t even utilize them in many cases.
MLB needs to step up to the plate before their pissed off fans figure out another (unauthorized) way to enjoy baseball.

That's the thing....
that really pisses me off. People are willing to pay for the product, and MLB says they are willing to sell. However, if you buy the EI package, they will blackout the local market, which is usually the very reason that the consumer is willing to pay for the package in the first place. To me the “fix” is rather simple. The technology exists where the local broadcasts can be carried exclusively in the local market (the other teams feed is excluded) over EI. The fans are happy, the broadcaster is happy, MLB is happy. I remember when the A’s games were carried on KICU a while back. I live far enough away that I couldn’t watch the games over the air, yet the EI package considered me “local” so I couldn’t watch it there either. I ended up telling the satellite company that my service address was in the Bay area. That way I could watch the games on the “local” channel. I’m sure that DirecTV knew this was utter bullshit, but since I wouldn’t pay for the EI package otherwise, they were happy to oblige.

I agree with pretty mich everything you say, but especially the part I quoted.
I live in eastern Iowa. I am “local” for SIX teams… Cardinals, Cubs, White Sox, Brewers, Twins, and Royals. The shortest drive is 5 hours. Kansas City is over 8 hours, yet I cannot watch the A’s play the Royals, for example, because KC is “local” and no local tv station has any interest in being a Royals affiliate because they’re too far away.
Granted, not being in the A’s market I’m better off than most A’s fans, but there’s still a huge chunk taken out of the season for me because six team areas that aren’t really “local” at all.

Step 1: Collect Underpants
no really
Step 1: Buy MLBTV
Step 2: Find a Proxy
Step 3: Watch A’s
or
Step 1: Find friend who lives in Bay Area and has access to A’s games
Step 2: Buy Slingbox
Step 3: Have friend set it up on his TV
Step 4: Watch A’s
A's in las vegas
Hey bro, I live here too and at the bar I worked at last season they have drect tv and I was able to watch 698 CSN CA for all the a’s broadcasts. I think they are too lazy to update their website that its available perhaps cause its a newer channel. I was not able to watch all the programming on the channel but the sports broadcasts came through loud and clear. I have even just ordered direct tv at my house so i can watch. The thing that makes me the most happy about it is that I don’t have to listen to the idiot angel announcers on fox sports. rex huddler should be executed at disneyland by the castle during fireworks. I feel like this dog. Don't get my hopes up.

Also, which bar is it in case business accounts just get different service than residential accounts so I can come watch?

698 appears to be fail when i just got the dish installed today

MLB did look into it
and elected to do nothing, because no one hates their customers like MLB.

The MLB Market Boundaries are ridculous!
I live 365 miles from Baltimore and yet my area is considered in Baltimores “territory”- even though no games are broadcast for Baltimore in this area! That means everytime the A’s play in Baltimore- the games are blacked out here. I’ve never understood why MLB works so hard to exclude so many fans but they sure do a fine job at it.

Elect me MLB Dictator...
…teams will get a 200 mile radius from their stadium for blackouts. That’s it. In areas where there’s overlap, teams will share. Everything else is open and belongs to nobody.
Pitching and defense wins pennants, but offense sells tickets.
Oh yeah?
Elect ME MLB Dictator and there is no black out and every year the A’s win the World Series.
Leopold Bloom on why he loves Mr. Peter Gammons, his best buddy:
"Peter Gammons systematically ignored and/or ran down the A’s in the pages of Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News for a good ten year stretch in the late seventies and early to mid-eighties. Trust me, the c**ksucker hates our team."
I had the same problem for years out in Vegas...
it totally sucks and is just stupid.
BUT..get Direct TV and you will be fine. I made the switch and get all A’s games now.
Yes I found out that I could PAY for Comcast California, the issue was simply it doesn't come included for free as a Regional Sports Network
And I’m thinking that A’s games will NOT be blacked out. I’m very happy.
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
Have no frear.....
You will see commercial’s for the Englander Pub and feel right at home, remember the local programming may no be available to you at all times. After the conclusion of the games i would get a little bit of shooty babbit and then i would black out again however all the games were broadcasted.
Free Travis Buck!!!!!
OK now that I've gotten an inch, I'll go for a mile...
Do we get the HD feed in LV too?
