Best BBG Fantasy Baseball Contest Ever!

(Disclaimer: if you don't like, or don't play fantasy baseball, you can skip this thread--baseball resumes at noon--, read this thread purely for the entertainment factor a contest on AN provides, or you can enter the contest!)

Okay, I have a deal for you guys; you ready?!

One of the fun things about Athletics Nation being a part of the larger SB Nation group is the occasional awesome perk we receive from companies who think we might be a nice target audience for their product. I thought we might take advantage of this one, since I know it's something we use anyway, and it's a great chance to try out a Fantasy Baseball league on a big-name site.

CBSSports.com has introduced the Fantasy Baseball Commissioner League and has partnered with SB Nation so we can start the best Fantasy Baseball League that I've ever been a part of! (Okay, so it might be my first time playing, but I'm marrying a ringer.) Basically, CBSports.com has offered AN a FREE league (a $179.99 value) and I'm looking for AN friends to play with!. They're also offering half-off any leagues you might want to start yourselves (using this link).

Want to know more?

Star-divide

Okay, a little bit about the Fantasy Baseball Commissioner League:

  • I'm told it is the web’s most powerful league manager
  • It won 8 out of 9 Fantasy Sports Trade Association Awards for “Best Fantasy Baseball Commissioner League Management Product”
  • You can customize the entire league the way you want (rules, scores, teams)
  • LIVE scoring & stats so you can follow along as your teams rack up points
  • Keeper league capability to carry on the tradition for many seasons to come
  • Expert analysis provides up-to-date information on all players & teams
  • Live chat/league messenger to trash talk with your competition
  • 14-Day Free Trial included

For our league, I'll be running a standard 5x5 Mixed (both AL and NL) league with 12 teams (5 offensive categories: BA, Runs, HR, RBI, SB and 5 pitching categories: W, S, K, ERA, WHIP); this league will go throughout the year, will be periodically updated on AN, and you can, of course, expect something like this for the winner. (Not Shawn Johnson, although she'd be a lovely prize; I'm referring to the trophy.) There will be live draft sometime closer to the season.

Judging from the responses in the past to Fantasy Baseball threads, I know that a lot of ANers play in some sort of fantasy league, and because it's not so much fun for me to play alone, I thought I would share with all of you! I'm looking to recruit 11 other teams from AN to play against me for FREE. And because it's AN, and we're all about fun here, I'm holding a contest to decide who the lucky 11 teams are. I have hand-selected a panel of guest judges (including our Blogfather Blez) to pick the lucky winners who will get into the official AN League. I'm looking for teams who really do want to play and will be active during the year.

I'm also looking for a couple of people who might have the following qualifications:: 1) an experienced fantasy baseball player, OR 2) have never played before OR 3) hates fantasy baseball, but would be willing to give it an honest try for the year. I thought it would be fun to hear from these people after the season to see how they liked the product, and if they liked or hated fantasy baseball.

In addition to a trophy, the winner will be guaranteed a spot in next year's league to defend their crown, will earn a whole year of bragging rights over AN, and I am working on some other prizes as well (A's memorabilia, signed merchandise). I can promise there will be something awesome for the winner...as well as a prize for every team that beats me in my very first attempt at Fantasy Baseball! (That should be easy; ask me about Brett Tomko!)

Here's the deal: To enter the contest, simply comment on this thread with "Official Entry" in the subject line, and in the comment itself, in 50 words or less, tell us why you should be let into the 1st Annual BBG Fantasy Baseball League. We're looking for creative, funny, unusual or stand-out answers as to why you deserve this honor. Entries must be posted by Sunday at midnight (March 7) and winners will be chosen next week. One entry per person. Everyone is welcome to apply (and yes, I will take the comment count as a sign of my popularity, and I cry easily), and if you meet one of the special qualifications above, please mention it in your comment.

If the AN Community would like to pick your favorite entries as they come in, we will be reading the comments to see who you like, and who you think would be fun to read about and root for.

If you are interested in starting your own league, CBSSports.com has offered half-off using this link. That takes the price down to $89.99 a league, which is less than $8 a person for a 12-team. You have to use that link to get the discount from SB Nation. If you want to offer a prize to the winner of your league, email me at baseballgirl1976 at hotmail and I'll hook you up.

So how about it?

Gametime is at 12PM.

I'll offer to play

I’ve played baseball for a number of years now and my experience is very similar to that of Fantasyland by Sam Walker. The first time I played fantasy baseball I was addicted. I made more transactions than the rest of the league combined and a ton of trades. I probably spent nearly as much time on my team as I did on AN. And trust me, that’s saying a lot.

In fact, I can name most of my original team from that year. That first year was in 2004. I ended up winning the league but feeling guilty for rooting for Vlad and spending so much time on it. In more recent years, I’ve decided to not invest as much in fantasy baseball. I make a habit of registering for enough leagues at the beginning of the year to 1) fulfill my baseball fix in pre-ST days and 2)make it so I have a rooting interest in pretty much every player.

A league that has a couple incentives and live scoring does pique my interest. I hereby throw my name in the hat.

I’ve played Fantasy Baseball the last 2 seasons and have gotten marginally better over that time. I still have to control my love for the A’s since I’ve been known to target players primarily for their A’s-ness but, like I said, I’m getting better. I check my rosters multiple times throughout the day so I’m definitely willing to make trades/FA pickups or whatnot. Plus, it’d be a lot cooler to play in a league with people I (electronically)know rather than just a bunch of randoms.

Yea, I found that funny as well.

It would be neat if they kicked down a free league to each of the blogs and the winners of each blog get to go on in the Playoffs or for the second half of the year against each other for the SB NATION CHAMPIONSHIP.

That WOULD be a cool idea.

You said you wanted a couple of rookies ‒ after playing espn.com’s watered-down version of fantasy baseball (BBC), I’m looking to make my fantasy "big show" debut. And I’m not above brown-nosing: baseballgirl’s hotstove.com interview was a master piece, she even made the hosts look a bit silly (re: “Father Grant”), and based on what I heard on KTRB yesterday I think she should replace Chris Townsend as the host of the post-game show.

I’ve played a couple of times before but always ended up not doing as well as I’d like. This is mainly because I’ve drafted with my heart instead of my head. Kinda the same reason that Beane will keep Chavez on the roster this year and not Fox. Such drafting mistakes include: Harden, Chavez(way tooooo many times), Milton Bradley, Mulder(post A’s), Crosby(year after Rookie season), and Jason Kendell(cause his past numbers said that he had to bounce back). This year I shall try my hardest to not draft Duke or Chavez and with my luck he will return to his old self and hit 25 hrs. If picked I will be a diligent manager of my team.

by pcoco on Mar 5, 2010 10:39 AM PST reply actions

will the league be free every year?

I don’t think I will join because I’m already in a yahoo head-to-head keeper league that has been going on for a few years. I won it all last year, thanks to a couple catchers having a big september, and want stay in it. I found out a couple years ago that trying to manage two teams at once was too dificult and time consuming for mee. To stay competitive in this league you need to constantly rotate starters to make sure some guy doesn’t make a start while sitting on the bench.

I’ve been playing fantasy sports for the better part of a decade now. I started with football, but now it has expanded to baseball, hockey, basketball, golf (yes, golf, I’m a fantasy sport addict). I’m hyper competitive, always check, can bring the smack talk as needed (as long as no one cries easily!), and definitely will know what I’m doing. Not only that, but I’ve also led every league I’ve ever been in for “moves made.” On top of being hyper competitive, I also have roster-ADD.

Wish I had gotten the half off offer before we set them up though because we had to pay full price for each. Its a nice system with an extremely deep pool of players (great for large rosters or keeper leagues). The analysis offered by CBS is not up to par with other sites though.

I am interested in getting back into Fantasy Baseball, and especially with AN, because ever since I went to school in Chicago, I’ve been a Sad Panda not being able to see the A’s live at the Coliseum, and being forced to use a Slingbox or MLB TV.
