Somewhat lost, Fangraphs has been doing their Organisational Rankings for the past few weeks. It turns out that the wait for the A's was not all too long, as they came in at 19th!
Fangraphs, which had been a past proponent of the A's, made some good points. The A's playbook of exploiting market inefficiencies and sabermetrics won't help them anymore, since instead of being rare to find a stat oriented club, the reverse is now true. The A's are now competing with big money teams, now with brains, for the same players. And we've seen the AL West's IQ go up with the expulsion of Bill Bavasi, and the Rangers Ownership no longer able to meddle with their front office affairs.
What exactly can we do? What can be done? Moneyball, in a sense, was the bane of the A's existence, telling the world how we succeed and allowing them to take our methods, apply them and improve upon them. Innovation does not help in the long run because of that very problem-if you go that route, you have to keep innovating, and I am not sure the A's are.
How can the A's get back on top?
