Petit traded to Texas for Edwar Ramirez
Last night the A's shipped Gregorio Petit to Texas for Edwar Ramirez.
Recent injuries, though, influenced the club to acquire right-handed reliever Edwar Ramirez from Texas in exchange for infielder Gregorio Petit in an effort to add insurance to a depleted relief corps.
I like this move, not because who we got (I know nothing about him) or that we dumped Petit, but because Petit will be able to stop being a yo-yo between Sacramento and Oakland. It looks like he'll finally get a shot at regular playing time in Texas.
The 25-year-old Petit is a career .278 hitter in just 25 big league games and could possibly land regular playing time with a Texas club that has to manage without utility infielder Khalil Greene this year.
Ramirez seems to be a servicable releif pitcher with a pretty good k/bb ratio Ramirez' stats
I think it's funny that in the A's Inbox the day before the trade Jane Lee said:
So while I'm slightly disappointed to see him go (again), I'm not too surprised. There's simply no room for Petit in Oakland, so for his sake, I hope he's packaged in an early-season trade that will give him the chance to be productive elsewhere.
What I'm trying to figure out is why the Yankees DFA'd him, and why, after paying the Yankees for him and only letting him pitch in 1 game this spring the Rangers traded him. Anyone have any insight here?
So AN, what are your thoughts?

what has petit ever done to deserve regular playing time?
Anyone have any insight here?
perhaps ramirez, like petit, is not very good?

.278 in his 25 games in the majors, decent (not great) AAA stats,
the horrific offense last year (especially in the infield) and with all the injuries, I think he should have been given an extended look.
lol
his OPS over those 25 games was 637.
his “decent” AAA stats over three years:
680 OPS
666 OPS
628 OPS

Petit's value is only his glove.
He’s a very good defender, will never hit enough to be a regular. He’s a nice guy to have on the bench as a defensive replacement or short-term fill in, but that’s all he is. Since the Rangers have one of the best middle infields in baseball, that’s likely all he’ll be asked to do. So, good for them, good for us.

huh, sounds like scutaros’ description when he came to the a’s. you know, before he got playing time because ellis got hurt.
Scutaro's actually improved pretty dramatically with the bat late in his career.
That’s highly unusual, and not something one should expect to see repeated.

where is this petit = scutaro nonsense coming from, susan slusser?
what do they have in common, they’re both latin american middle infielders?
should the a’s acquire all ten thousand mediocre pitchers who fit jamie moyer’s description?
the reason you and slusser are comparing him to scutaro is because the other hundred guys didn’t make it and no one remembers their names.
scutaro OPS
minor leagues: 802
major leagues: 721
petit OPS

Pretty much.
That, and I bet there’s a bit of concern since so many of the bullpen guys were nicked up. Cheap filler for a player with basically no future in Oakland.

All I know about Edwar Ramirez
is that he’s a bespectacled reliever. I like that.

But does he fall down after every pitch?
This never happened, but I saw you leave
and crawl into a bed of broken windows.
And fist pump after every strikeout.
He steps to the left, he steps to the riiiiiiight. That Amos Roberts, he'll make you look shite!
The Yankees DFAed him because he can't throw strikes.
Utterly nasty changeup, but he has no idea where it’s going. They got him because Devine isn’t going to be ready to start the season, and this gives them some depth and options for the 7th bullpen spot.

Ramirez was hurt by an unlucky BABIP / HR total last season
In terms of K/9 he’s one of the best in baseball. Sort of an off-speed counterpart to Henry Rodriguez.. Scary BB/9 but still pretty good.
The Yankees DFAed him because they didn’t like his ERA and their ballpark doesn’t work well for him.

well no wonder
i read a stat that said 2 years ago his splits were fantastic and last year they were awful. could the difference be moving from old yankee stadium, a pitchers park, to new yankee stadium, a pitcher’s nightmare. if that’s the case he should do pretty well in oakland. cant be worse than the andrew brown’s of the world.
Walks are walks in any ballpark.
In 2007 he walked 14 in 21 innings, and in 2009 he walked 18 in 22 innings. In 2008, he walked 24 in 55 1/3 innings, which still isn’t very good, but at least it isn’t ridiculous. That’s the main difference, and if he keeps walking people at that rate, he’s going to remain useless.

Well, he's not really very close to Henry Rodriguez if you pay some attention to what he's actually doing out there

Edwar just needs Jose Molina to follow him around the rest of his career.
Then he can continue to throw AWESOME pitch sequences like this.
Pitch 1: Change-up(outside)
Pitch 2: Change-up(low)
Pitch 3: Change-up(outside)
Pitch 4: Change-up(outside)
Pitch 5: Change-up(low)
Pitch 6: Change-up(outside)
Pitch 7: Change-up(outside)
/sigh psssssst jose psssssst after 3 in a row it’s not a changeup anymore!

It's just a "slow ball"
Or as I liked to call it when I threw it: A fastball.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
Or, when I threw it, a 'Home Run'
I suspect that you think tilting at windmills means something other than what it does.
The ninth fastest thirty year old in San Francisco
So why did Texas let him go so fast and what happens if...
I can accept that the Rangers needed a utility infielder, and Petit’s good with the glove at least. But, and correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t think bullpen is a strength for the Rangers. So why would they trade a serviceable, major league experienced reliever in return for a limited player? I hope the answer is that the A’s are better at evaluating pitchers than the Rangers are, but maybe someone else has an idea.
On another issue, what happens if Ramirez doesn’t make the 25 man roster? Or if he’s later not needed on the 25 man roster? Can he be sent to Sacto w/out being exposed to waivers? Does anyone know the answer to this?
Edwar was taking up a spot on the Rangers' 40-man roster and Petit can be sent to the minors freely
Texas has a lot of relievers and keeping Edwar around ties the hands a bit as far as who can stay and who has to be optioned. I’m pretty sure he would have to go through waivers.
Just checked Lone Star Ball
They don’t seem to happy about picking up Petit, but they also note the flexibility of Petit’s remaining options and the opening on the 40 man roster.
We are talking about the Rangers
They could have picked up Petit for nothing, yet they didn’t.

Well, if you want to go that road
the A’s could have picked up Ramirez for a few bucks and didn’t.
I’m surprised there’s so much discussion going on about a trade which is just barely this side of utterly irrelevant.

They just picked up...
…Andres Blanco from the Cubs, too. So I don’t think they’re all that keen Petit yet. Lonestar Ball seems to agree with me that Blanco will be the team’s UIF come Opening Day.

Dont be shocked
If petit turns into a solid, useful player and pennington is the dud. He was a highly regarded 1st rd pick, so pennington has already failed a bit. Both are likely utility players at best, end of the 25 man roster filler. A’s seem to have some false hope Pennington can be a starting SS since they dont have other decent options around till Grant Green is ready.
don't be shocked if no one remembers who gregorio petit was three years from now

I thought the logic was if you make it to the majors the draft pick is
considered a success?
Someone activate the PT signal!
He steps to the left, he steps to the riiiiiiight. That Amos Roberts, he'll make you look shite!
Well, there's no magic from just making the majors
That is, in and of itself, worthless to an MLB team. However, it’s not really that high.
Average surplus value for Pennington’s draft slot is in the neighborhood of $6M or so, or about what you’d pay for one year of a mediocre free agent like Adam LaRoche.

SSS
but he looked terrible in the Dominican World Series when I watched on MLB network. His defense was poor and he barely hit anything against mediocre pitching.

With
Rosales, Sogard, Tolleson, Wimberly, Horton, Chen,Weeks and Cardenas all lined up behind Pennington and Ellis, Petit was expendable. Simple as that. It’s a good trade. We got something that might potentially prove useful for something that in all likelyhood we could have and would have done without.
