an unexpected source for A's talk on the radio?
Yesterday evening, as I was finishing dinner and preparing for the next day's work, I turned on KNBR 680. It was 7 pm and time for Sports PHone 680. The host for the past five years, Damon Bruce, just ended his time there and started in the afternoons on 1050. I'd heard he was to be replaced by F.P. Santangelo. Perhaps more out of curiousity than anything else I listened.
His intro began with a brief thing about him playing for the Giants, the Dodgers, and the A's. Then he began his monologue and bean to take calls. Call #2 was from "Eric from Arizona." Turns out it was Eric Chavez!! Apparently FP has told alot of his ballplayer pals to call the show from time to time, and Chavvy actually did it.
FP and Chavvy spent quite a bit of time talking about the A's. Chavvy had some interesting things to say especially about Brett Anderson. After he finally signed off. FP wondered aloud on the radio if he would get fired on the first day of his KNBR (owned by the Giants) show, for spending so much time talking about the A's.
Later on Eric Byrnes called as well. FP asked him about the Mariners and the AL West but Byrnsie just talked alot about Ichiro and the amazing amount of media that covers him. Various other fans called and mostly talked about baseball (and a little bit about the US-Canada Olympic hockey game). Of the fans who called to talk baseball, the majority actually talked about the A's. And at least FP is not so negative about the A's as Bruce was. I don't know how typical this first night was of what his show will be like, but it was a pleasant surprise to hear actuall A's talk on the radio -- and KNBR at that!

Usually when I flip on KNBR
its so much Giants love I’m in my car and I puke in my mouth, but since I don’t want to make a mess I have to swallow it. It’s refreshing that the A’s are finally getting some love. It still won’t make me listen.

posted another thread about Damon’s show on 1050 from 12-4. Ken Korach was his first guest and it was great interview! The talked at length about Bill King and how it’s a joke that he’s not in the hall of fame. Korach is too classy to call out the sports writers for their lack of respect to Bill King, but we all know he feels the same as us A’s fans. He also talked about Brett Anderson being a potential future Cy Young candidate/winner, and even said he could rival Tim Lincecum at some point! How about them apples?
That’s great we A’s fans got so much love yesterday from two different shows. When is the last time that happened?
By the way, Damon doesn’t hate the A’s. He likes to stir the pot, that’s for sure, but he actually really respects A’s fans Billy Beane.
Ask him anytime how he feels about Brian Sabean and it won’t be pretty.
Go A’s!

I wish I got a reception for that. I love Damon Bruce.

Can you listen to his show online RRS?
I live in San Jose and 1050 isn’t as clear as 680 but it’s decent. Try the radio feed online and see how that treats you.

No
I downloaded that software and tried it, but it didn’t work. I tried the basic player and it still doesn’t work. It doesn’t work for either station.

I posted this before seeing Man Bear Pig's post
Looks like the A’s were well represented on KNBR yesterday!
I actually liked Damon Bruce’s show. I don’t think he hates the A’s. However, his comments about them were usually quite negative (Urban and Lurie would often call him on it). Whether it was beause he liked to stir the pot, because he hates the designated hitter, or what, I don’t know.
And yes, he’s been very clear about his opinions about Sabean. One reason I used to listed to his show in the evening was that — even when I disagreed with him — i appreciated his consistency and clarity and yes, honesty. I won’t be able to hear him much during the day, unfortunately.
I would like to know more about the interesting things Chavy said
pls k thx.

Hi again, sorry work interferes
anyway, Chavez had heard the remarks about Anderson being a future Cy Young winner, and he rightly cautioned people not to put that on anyone so early in their career. He was very qualified as far as factors outside of Anderson’s control (such as team offense), but was absolutley glowing in his report on Anderson’s abilitite. One thing he said specifically was that last season Anderson only really controlled the right side of the plate, to right handed hitters. So far this spring Chavez sees Anderson now becoming able to control both sides of the plate.
2 positive A's stories about KNBR
did hell freeze over. I can’t stand that station, and am so happy with my satellite radio. Although if I have to, I’ll listen to 1050, it just hasn’t been worth a damn since the Raiders moved off it.
No more raining on Bruins Nation's rainy parade, they took their ball and went home.

They will always have one or two A's representatives, per month, to appease us
A’s fans, to keep the ratings up. The Giants are represented every day, on the morning show, and then Ralph has Bochy, Sabean, and Neukom, so, until it is more A’s, I still don’t care.
That is on 680
On 1050 the morning show is the scripted Jim Rome. Then it was Dan Patrick talking about people he knows. None of those were shows about the Giants. Ya they suck, but it is not Giants related. 1050 is not the Giants flagship station so DB is not forced to shove them down our throats, He was the only host who did not fly the Giants flag.
I said this in my post but why should a host talk about a team when their fans don’t bother calling in. If we want more A’s talk, flood the phone lines on 1050 between noon and 4. Hey, maybe sitting on our thumbs and doing nothing will have a more lasting affect. It has worked so far……right? Right?

Leopold Bloom on why he loves Mr. Peter Gammons, his best buddy:
"Peter Gammons systematically ignored and/or ran down the A’s in the pages of Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News for a good ten year stretch in the late seventies and early to mid-eighties. Trust me, the c**ksucker hates our team."

Bruce is a pain
Damon Bruce was extremely negative toward the A’s on his evening shift. I only listen when I’m driving, but when he was on I always turned it off. He’s a punk.

I agree, Bruce sucks
Plus, I am a big fan of the Dan Patrick show and liked listening to it in the afternoons. Give me my DP show back 1050!
And as for FP, as a former devout 1140 KHTK listener in Sacramento, he was widely despised but I thought he was OK. Not great, but not terrible.
Funny how he was fired as a co-host of a radio show in Sacramento, which is a decently sized market, but now has his own show on KNBR, which is about as big as sports talk stations get in a massive media market. He failed upwards!
On Day Two of FP's show - no A's players called.
Perhaps it was only that they called since it was his first day.
I listened to the show for about 2 minutes last night
and then proceeded to turn off my radio in disgust.
I don’t know how long he’s gonna last but he’s gonna have to step it up soon or I get the feeling he’s dust!
