Yesterday evening, as I was finishing dinner and preparing for the next day's work, I turned on KNBR 680. It was 7 pm and time for Sports PHone 680. The host for the past five years, Damon Bruce, just ended his time there and started in the afternoons on 1050. I'd heard he was to be replaced by F.P. Santangelo. Perhaps more out of curiousity than anything else I listened.
His intro began with a brief thing about him playing for the Giants, the Dodgers, and the A's. Then he began his monologue and bean to take calls. Call #2 was from "Eric from Arizona." Turns out it was Eric Chavez!! Apparently FP has told alot of his ballplayer pals to call the show from time to time, and Chavvy actually did it.
FP and Chavvy spent quite a bit of time talking about the A's. Chavvy had some interesting things to say especially about Brett Anderson. After he finally signed off. FP wondered aloud on the radio if he would get fired on the first day of his KNBR (owned by the Giants) show, for spending so much time talking about the A's.
Later on Eric Byrnes called as well. FP asked him about the Mariners and the AL West but Byrnsie just talked alot about Ichiro and the amazing amount of media that covers him. Various other fans called and mostly talked about baseball (and a little bit about the US-Canada Olympic hockey game). Of the fans who called to talk baseball, the majority actually talked about the A's. And at least FP is not so negative about the A's as Bruce was. I don't know how typical this first night was of what his show will be like, but it was a pleasant surprise to hear actuall A's talk on the radio -- and KNBR at that!
