3/16/10: The "Sorry I deleted your fun post" DLD...

Yup, that was me, I deleted that DevindiaRajkot post. I couldn't figure out what it was about, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't baseball related, despite the number of comments. So instead, I'll give you this thread to play with.

There's a few basketball games this weekend.

Tiger's going to start working again.

Some old guy is probably going to keep playing this winter.

I want to start crazy rumors like this. Because seriously, this couldn't actually have been discussed, could it?

Apparently tomorrow is a holiday.

For those thinking about a Minnesota trip

Single game tickets for the Twins went on sale yesterday, and seem to be selling briskly…I checked for the A’s games in August and some of the lower-priced areas were sold out. The link is here.
The A’s make two trips to Minnesota for the inaugural season at Target Field:
Fri Aug 13 — postgame fireworks (try that in the Metrodome!)
Sat Aug 14 — Mini Target Field giveaway
Sun Aug 15 — Peanuts 60th Anniversary (though Northern Californians may associate Charles M. Schulz with Santa Rosa, he grew up in Saint Paul)

Fri Sept 17 — no promotion
Sat Sept 18 — Twins knit cap
Sun Sept 19 — Denard Span wind-up walker (what?)

alas, the Twins fishing lure is a giveaway early in the season against the Orioles.

Yay! I love the TravelPod game.

This one is fun, but the scoring is odd. There’s not much score variance for distance off, and round 3 and 4 have very little room for error, so pretty much the only way to finish those rounds is to click each one VERY fast and not miss any by more than 100 miles or so. If you manage to get a city almost exactly spot on, you don’t gain a whole lot for it, whereas stalling for a few seconds costs you a lot.

Anyone else catch the Terry Gross interview with Michael Lewis on NPR?

At the very end, he mentioned that Brad Pitt really wanted Moneyball to be made into a movie, and that filming starts in June.
Pitt also bought the rights to the book they were discussing, The Big Short. Gross mentions that there’s an additional excerpt from the interview dealing with his experience with his books being made into movies, but I couldn’t find it.

Stadium resolution passes by unanimous vote

San Jose — On Tuesday night, the San Jose City Council voted unanimously to approve a measure which would accept the final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and allow construction of a new, 18,000-seat stadium for the San Jose Earthquakes at the Airport West site.

The stadium would occupy 14 acres of a 78-acre site, the remainder of which is slated to be developed with 1.5 million square feet of offices, 75,000 square feet of retail space, and two hotels totaling 300 rooms. Cost of the stadium is estimated at $60 million, with the additional development budgeted at over $500 million.

"Our next step is to go to the Planned Development stage with the city, but then at the same time we’re working on how we finance the stadium and put it together," said Keith Wolff of Wolff Urban Development and son of Earthquakes owner Lew Wolff. "But the first step was to make sure we had the rights to build the stadium, obviously, and so we’re talking to potential sponsors and naming rights partners, and looking at different avenues for financing the stadium."

Wolff continued with an explanation of what the Planned Development stage entails.

"It’s just really to get the permit to build the stadium. So, we have to do a little bit more design work, we have to deal with some of the issues (with sound and light from the stadium) raised today and that process, and also working with the community groups. But I think the key is to figure out a way to finance the stadium, and that’s the next piece. We’re going to go full speed ahead on trying to do that."

If you're at spring training

you might want to go out to Jobing.com Arena, where the NHL Coyotes play, in Glendale, to see what Lew’s vision of a retail/residential/sports arena complex looks like when built. I went to a Coyotes game there one night last week. The place was hopping with the 15,000 hockey fans around before and after the game. But it seemed like it would be rather desolate at most other times. Not the kind of place I would ever consider living as it’s surrounded by acres of asphalt parking lots (the Cardinals’ football stadium is not directly attached to the complex but it’s very close by).

I copied and pasted the lyrics off the first site I found

Besides, Westerberg slurs a lot. Singers who slur a lot tend to mean for their lyrics to not to be interpreted too rigidly.

I’m a big fan of Mark E. Smith of The Fall and Steven Malkmus of Pavement because they achieved the same effect without slurring. “Korea! Career! Korea! Career!”

Although Mark E. does slur a lot, too, of course.

Brtiish rhymes are funny.

In Johnny Inkslinger’s song in Benjamin Britten’s Paul Bunyan (libretto by Auden), “messiah” is rhymed with “fire”, and “martyr” is rhymed with “sonata”.

Boo

Deodorant is overrated. Most of them smell worse than the scents they intend to cover.

Also, grammar fail.

On a game thread I came up with air conditioning and Diet Coke as being

two of man’s greatest inventions I’d like to add deodorant as my 3rd choice. Without it life would really stink.

by sirbed on Mar 19, 2010 4:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Diet Coke is also awful.

Diet sodas are a scam. They have less calories, but because your body tastes the sweet and doesn’t get caloric intake to go with it, it thinks it’s missing something so it makes you crave more. In the end you stay just as fat.

But from the seller’s point of view, this is a feature, not a bug.

I’m not in favor of BO, by the way. Some BO really does stink. I just object to the prevalent view that all natural odors are bad and must be expunged.

Maybe this is archaic, but

how the hell are you supposed to smell who you’re attracted to if they cover it up with perfumes and such?

I guess we’re supposed to be attracted visually, but humans are just so ugly…

I can’t wait until we can start nano-re-engineering our own bodies in a more artful and aesthetically pleasing way.

You pretty much have to take her to bed

and keep her there for 24 hours working up enough of a sweat to wash away all the fake perfumes and makeups. Then you can see and smell the woman’s true beauty.

But yeah, it would be nice to figure out which ones you’re attracted to before you take them to bed.

CNN article on the US and the upcoming world cup

some stats:

In 2006, the World Cup final — with 16.9 million Americans watching, five million of them the Spanish broadcast — beat out deciding games of baseball’s World Series (16.3 million) and basketball’s NBA finals (15.7 million).

Evidence that soccer is shedding its second-class citizenry may lie in the ticket sales for the World Cup in South Africa. Speaking on March 4, U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Neil Buethe said at least 125,000 tickets had been sold stateside, more than in England or Brazil and second only to South Africa.

Haven't we been hearing about the coming soccer wave for about 30 years now?

I played it as a kid and it was fun but I just can’t get into watching it but if that’s what turns you on then cool.

I did see a movie called “The Damned United” about English Soccer in the 70’s and it was really good.

Haven’t we been hearing about the coming soccer wave for about 30 years now?

well, the world cup final may only be one game whereas the world series is 4-7 games, but the world series features two american teams with mostly american players, whereas the US soccer team didn’t even make it out of the group stage of the world cup. yet more americans watched a final between france and italy, played in germany at a time suitable for european audiences. and 2006 wasn’t a bad year for baseball, third highest attendance in history.
