Spring Training Suggestions?
I've been an Oakland fan my entire life and my dad has been a converted Oakland A's fan for over 30 years. We've both always wanted to go to Spring Training and for his 75th birthday I'm taking him! We're going this weekend and I was wondering if anyone have any suggestions on where to go or tips on things not to be missed?? I know the Pink Pony is a famous place, but does anyone know where the A's tend to hangout? Or good bars to spot other ball players?? Thanks!

on Saturday after the game there will be a radio broadcast from Valley Ho hotel
among the people to be intervewed is Ken Korach
I don't have any answers for you,
but I wanted to share my excitement that I’m making the 12 hour drive to Phoenix tomorrow, and will spend the next 2 weeks watching the A’s play baseball!

Here's my review of the independent brewpubs
within 5 miles or so of Phoenix Muni. I did not see ballplayers in any of these places. It wouldn’t surprise me if the players hung out at a place like Gordon Biersch at 5th and Mill in Tempe. Link to review.
We need to rent a house in Phoenix for the month of March....

I actually do know someone who has his second home there,
but I think he’s still there then, and not at his primary home in PA. :-(
Here's the yard

Papago Park
My buddy and I, used to hang out @ Papago Park in the morning, 5 fields of Green and Gold heaven. Then head over to Muni for a game. If the A’s are off, you might be able to catch a minor league game (for free) in the afternoon. Eats… Don N Charlies is a must for a first timer. Frasher is pretty good, but I liked Cowboy Ciao in Scottsdale. You can also check the schedule and see if there is a night game anywhere. And for the under 30 crowd, The Library in Tempe….
Couple of restaurant suggestions if you like mexican food
Barrio Cafe on 16th St south of Thomas. Went last week when my parents came down here and it was great.
Padre’s Modern Mexican on Camelback around the 10th street area. I like this one slightly better.
If you don’t have tickets yet, I would suggest getting them, especially if you’re going to the A’s/Cubs Saturday. The Cubs are very popular here. So are the M’s, Giants (at least at their park), and D-Backs. At Muni, the best place to sit is the 1st base side, because the sun will be behind you.
Also, in the morning, you may check out the training facility at the corner of McDowell and 64th St to see the players up close. From the stadium take Galvin Pkwy north about 1.5 miles (Priest, Galvin, and 64th are all different names for the same road depending on whether you’re in Tempe, PHX, or Scottsdale).
Watch out for RoboCop.
great tip
i was gonna ask if someone knew where they trained – how about the minor league camp?

I think the minor league camp is there
Not sure though.
It's a little ways outside town, but I liked the Pinnacle Peak Patio when I lived there.
I don’t think it’s a player hangout necessarily, but it’s got great atmosphere and fantastic steaks.
Hint: Wear a tie. lol
Pitching and defense wins pennants, but offense sells tickets.
I once saw Bobby Crosby and the (then future) missus at Oregano's Pizza on Scottsdale Rd
but I would think most of the players aren’t such cheap dates!
Nico knows how to make one face.
Turkey? Martini? Doesn’t matter.
Taken down with hearts alive, our hearts alive.
seriously, I don't think I've ever seen a picture of Nico without that look on his face

Korach and Fosse pronounced Don and Charlies
as the place where ’everyone hangs out."Not sure if they meant the players too, or only the broadcasters and press (except Urban, who practically lives at Frashers).
Thanks!
Hi everyone! Thanks for all the suggestions! We had an amazing time and my dad met willie mays and ricky henderson at Don and Charlies. We also went to the Valley Ho and met Ken Korach. Thanks for all your help! Go Oakland!!
