Uh oh...
Author's note: I'm new here. This will be my first FanPost. I've been a regular at Niners Nation and McCovey Chronicles, but I live in Oakland and go to an Oakland middle school, so it's about time I joined this blog. Billy Beane is a genius, Oakland needs to spend more money, and we need a new stadium! That is all.
Man, the new GM of the Mariners really knows how to shape a team. Anytime you walk away from an offseason with Cliff Lee, resign your resident ace King Felix, resign the heart and soul of your clubhouse and a fan attraction/favorite in Ken Griffey, Jr., resign the best defensive outfielder in baseball (Franklin Gutierrez) to a 4 year deal, get rid of a clubhouse cancer and salary drain and otherwise useless Carlos Silva in exchange for a really talented but unpredictable Milton Bradley, sign Chone Figgins, the best infielder on the market, resign Erik Bedard to a one year deal to shore up the rotation, trade for singles specialist and defensive ace Casey Kotchman, bring back another defensive force in Jack Wilson, and pick up one of the most underrated 1st basemen/DHs in the league from the waiver wire (Ryan Garko), I think you've done a pretty good job. Let's see the starting lineup, shall we?
RF- Ichiro
3B- Chone Figgins
LF- Milton Bradley
2B- Jose Lopez
DH- Ken Griffey Jr.
CF- Franklin Gutierrez
1B- Casey Kotchman
SS- Jack Wilson
C- Josh Bard
SP- Felix Hernandez
SP- Cliff Lee
SP- Ian Snell
SP- Erik Bedard
SP- Ryan Rowland-Smith
CP- David Aardsma
SU Mark Lowe
SU Sean White
MR Shawn Kelley
MR Brandon League
LR Jason Vargas
Well, very impressive. Best defense in the league, top 5 pitching, and top 10 offense will almost certainly win the AL West, and a deep run in the playoffs, possibly even the World Series, suddenly doesn't look so hard anymore... for them. /Sigh. I guess Oakland will have to settle for 3rd place this year. A's in 2011!

Top 10 offense?
Guess I’m going to have to take a closer look at a bunch of line-ups, ‘cause I didn’t realize there were so many pathetic offenses in baseball. How else can one explain the Mariners going from fielding the 3rd worst offense in baseball in 2009 to a Top 10 offense in 2010? Figgins is good but he’s not THAT good.

I think he was trying to say
“not as talented at baseball as TO is at football”, which is arguable, if a bit of an apples/oranges deal.
Correct
Apples / oranges, yes. I was just trying to show that both are disruptions within their respective teams, and that TO (outside of buffalo) was a larger impact player on his team. Probably a bad example, but was an attempt to show that MB is not That big an positive impact player, when you add in his antics / disruptivness.

He could bounce back, but there must be a reason he sucked so badly for the Cubs.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
He wasn't ever hurt, but playing right field full-time might have drained him
Or he could’ve just hated it so much that he wasn’t on top of his game. I mean, he really, really didn’t belong in Chicago. It was a daily thing with him. Normally I don’t put much stock into that stuff, but with a headcase like Bradley I might buy into it a little.

It's anybody's guess, really
but at least headcase Manny has enough hot streaks over the course of a season to make up for the games when his head is in the clouds (or somewhere else…). Bradley may be going to a better situation this year, but it’s been a long time since he played in a home ballpark that’s as bad for hitters as Safeco is. Moving from Wrigley and NL pitching to Safeco and AL pitching is not going to help him any. And at some point, it might not be just a constant stream of injuries, but the whole body pretty much breaking under the strain. Could that process have started last season?

Speaking of which, I just have to say it.
Tonight, Stephen Curry became the first rookie in the NBA since Kevin Johnson in 1988 to record at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Curry finished with 36 points, 13 assists, 10 rebounds and even 3 steals on 11-for-22 shooting and 7-for-11 from downtown. That’s what I’m talkin’ about! Oh, and we won by 30 points without our two leading scorers.

I like the Mariners for the division
But as others have said, their offense is not that good. I’d say it’s 50-50 they’ll score more runs than the A’s in 2010, although that’s just back of the napkin. They kind of are an extreme version of the A’s: better defense, better pitching, worse offense.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton
Pitching wise, I am not sure they are better
Our rotation is better than theirs, I would say. While Lee and Felix > Duke and Sheets, the back end of Seattle’s rotation is not very good.
Bedard tips it in their favor for me
When you have two 5 WAR pitchers at 1-2 and an injury risk who also has big time talent and may come back by May, you have a great rotation. Bedard may be a gamble, but so are Sheets and Duke.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton

Hate to say it, but when you
get rid of a clubhouse cancer and salary drain and otherwise useless Carlos Silva in exchange for a really talented but unpredictable Milton Bradley
you’re not exactly improving your clubhouse. There probably isn’t a worse choice.
Milton Bradley is great
as long as you have a Ken Macha to tackle the man when he’s being a douche… This is one of the few cases where the height and weight of a manager becomes pertinent, but they don’t list these things on fangraphs. I really don’t think Don Wakamatsu has what it takes to take Milton down….

Okay, that might be true
Milton’s a pretty good hitter. But since there are no metrics for locker-room morale, it can be tough to gauge his (net) contribution, once you factor in the headaches and crybaby attitude.
Again, the alternative is paying CARLOS SILVA $12 million a season.
It’s pretty easy to gauge his net contribution relative to that contract.

Future Star
I think AN should go retro and make “future star blogger” trading cards. Blez: sign this kid before he gets too deeply into that team over there or, god forbid, his parents move him to LA while he’s still impressionable.
As for Seattle, the old saying you don’t win on paper comes to mind. Really, the difference between this Seattle GM and the previous one is night and day, leading to a bit of giddiness which is to be expected in the wet NW winter.
Not saying Seattle didn’t do some very good things, but that lineup isn’t that good, they overachieved already last season, and Ichiro isn’t getting younger. Which uncle Milt shows up (and stays that way all year) will go a long way to how they do. Junior? Not worried about him. Figgins? Could be wrong, but is Figgins THAT good? He’s valuable in that he can play all over, but he produced in a contract year and is aging and not in his comfort zone in LA anymore.
I just think they’ll be good but not as good as many seem to assume.
The Angels will find a way to stay in it, but by no means are they as good as they’ve been.
Texas seems like they’re ready to do something, have an armed and dangerous minor league system from which to draw and trade, and already hit the best in the division. If they continue the trend of finally pitching half way decently, they could surprise and win it.
The A’s will depend (like all of them really) on health and getting a few “breakout years” from some young hitters. That and Anderson being what we all think he will be.
It should be the best division race from top to bottom in MLB.

Figgins? Could be wrong, but is Figgins THAT good? He’s valuable in that he can play all over, but he produced in a contract year and is aging and not in his comfort zone in LA anymore.
He’s good for sure, he just doesn’t appear to be the difference-maker people are making him out to be. He did set a career high in walk rate last year, but also in strikeout rate. And, his perceived value—his speed and versatility—doesn’t really match his actual value anymore. He’s an aggressive baserunner and steals a lot of bases, he just not the most efficient base-stealer (he’s been caught 30 times over the last two seasons.) Figgins also seems to get thrown out on the bases more often than you’d like for a guy with his speed (I don’t have any numbers to back this claim up so much as just watching a bunch of Angels games.) As for his versatility, I suppose it’s still there but he hasn’t been used that way in a while, and it doesn’t look like Seattle plans on using him that way either. He had 11 starts in RF in 2007, which was the last time he had more than ten starts at any position other than 3B.
So to answer your question, probably not.

okay.
I make signs all day and have to tear through these posts like…something something something.
1. Your cat’s name rocks! Like live AC/DC with Bon Scott rocks.
2. Otter Pops rock! Like…um…Nazareth singing Hair of the Dog.
Yeah. I’m gonna go get my hair feathered.

Hair of the Dog kicks the tar out of Love Hurts.
Unfortunately, that’s all I can say about that, because I doubt there’s anyone else on this planet who can recall a third Nazareth song.
Always the summers are slipping away.
Find me a way for making it stay.
No. I'm about 30 minutes north of Seattle.
Otters love it here. My office overlooks a large pond (small lake). In past years we’ve occasionally seen otters passing through. This year there are three that have taken up residence all winter.
I often see them out there swimming around, especially when the weather is gray and drizzly. They’re very active today. Just now as I’m writing I see one chomping on a fish.
I love the otters. Otters are cool.

but you hate beavers.
Especially ones that mistake fiddlin’ for violinin’.
You’re just full of incongruities, beaver-hater.

True story:
When I was a kid I had a beanbag/stuffed animal that was a beaver, and his name was “Otter”.
Honestly, I had forgotten about that until now. I think Otter may even among the select few stuffed animals that are sealed up in a box in the closet.

Free the Beaver!
LB, I think we need a sign for this.

that might get you arrested.
… and therein lies the tension between discouraging free rodent upgrades and relying on random walkup business. LB, you should tarp your kitchen. And move to San Jose. -mb

How sad for you.
I keep Mr. Bunny in a place of prominence in my home.
Sadly, or maybe sanely, he is not a stuffed turtle.

If that's the Mariners lineup this year
The A’s won’t have the worst offense in the AL West!

Nah
That lineup isn’t that bad. It just needs some tweaking. Gutierrez should be hitting third. Having Bradley fifth, Griffey sixth and Kotchman seventh isn’t that bad when you have guys that get on base a lot with Ichiro and Figgins. Their lineup is better than ours.

Agreed
Ichiro and Chone are better than anyone in our lineup. Then the rest of their lineup compares about even to ours. That pretty much tips the ball in their favor.

Griffey shouldn't be in the lineup every day anyway.
For DH/OF they should be rotating in some combination of Byrnes, Langerhans, and Saunders.

We called him back up really late at night only to have him sit on the bench for a week and a half.
