Blue Jays acquire Dana Eveland for player to be named.
Not sure if this has been posted yet, I did not see it and it doesn't exactly qualify as breaking news but I am in 2 feet of snow in Philly so here you go
From MLB Trade Rumors.com According to a team press release, Toronto has acquired left-hander Dana Eveland from the A's in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. About two bucks maybe?
In nine starts for the Athletics last season, the 26-year-old posted a 7.16 ERA with 4.5 K/9 and 5.3 BB/9.

Oh well
I was holding out a little hope that the A’s could get a low minors C+ prospect. Slusser had said Eveland and Petit were both drawing some interest. Instead, looks like the A’s will just get organization filler. And the Mulder tree loses another member.
Eveland would have been nice depth. He had a nice 2008. Best of luck in Canadia.

The best we could realistically hope for
Eveland was horrible in 2008, uneven in 2007, and we have a lot of guys who look just as good or better in the high minors. Given that he’s out of options, it’s not surprising that a PTBN (or cash) is the best we could do. Better than nothing. The fact that Petit still has options makes him valuable/useful to some teams, and if we can get another lottery ticket for him (PTBN or other non-prospect who might surprise us), that’s fine.

Just less competition for Gio
He has such good stuff. I’m hoping to all hope that he gets first crack to start the year. He could flameout, but I still believe.

Beane likes giving away talent to the Jays
Hopefully doesnt backfire and eveland turns into another Ted Lilly.
Ted Lilly was actually good for us
Dana Eveland, not so much

Giving away talent?

and in other ex-A's news, Ronald McDonald
(aka Bobby Kielty) is trying to make a comeback to MLB as a pitcher
which I find funny, since he would never give up switch hitting
When he was only good one way. But yet he will convert to pitching…. umm ok.
Such a short-sighted comment
Ever think that if Kielty had batted right-handed against RHPs, he might have been much, much worse than he was while batting left-handed?

Fair enough
But the splits were so fantastically disparate that you’d figure he’d at least consider the idea. Instead, he outright refused.
For the record, I miss Kielty. Mainly because I miss the days when the A’s had legitimate situational offensive threats coming off the bench instead of, “whatever washed-up vet or failed prospect we have left.”
"Smokey, this be not the foul jungles of the darkest East Orient. This be ninepins. We are bound by laws."
No, he did consider the idea.
And concluded it was the wrong choice for him. Everyone’s acting like it’s just a simple matter of standing on the other side of the box. But if you’ve been hitting one way your whole life, always seeing the ball come from the pitcher’s outside arm, there’s a learning curve involved in changing it. Maybe Kielty would be better in the long run (or maybe he wouldn’t) but in the meanwhile he’d have to take time off in order to work on it. He was a marginal player already. Missing that time could have ended his career.
Kielty is not an idiot, and he knows better than we do what amount of re-working it would take to switch. He would have weighed the pros and cons, and evidently he concluded that he had better career chance to just accept that he’s a marginal bench player who sucks from one side but at least has a job.
Maybe you think you know better than he does what is good for him and you disagree with his decision. OK, fine. But that still doesn’t mean he didn’t even consider it. Of course he did.

Plus, he DID bat RH against a RHP

I'm with you
He had it suggested to him some 7 bazillion times by every team that has ever employed him, thought about it each time, and said “no.” Good for him. He has also complained about being a platoon player, and it seems to me that a possible way of overcoming that perception is seeing if you can outperform your career .227 average against RHP by batting right-handed. I’ll agree that it’s not as simple as just standing on the other side of the plate. But if you’re already a non-factor from one side of your supposed switch-hitting “ability,” wouldn’t it behoove you to at least make a go of it? Say, by working on it all off-season and through Spring Training? Even if it doesn’t work out, at least you made the attempt.
For my part, I tend to agree with the notion put out there by some professional baseball writers— one of which was Olney, I think, though I’m not 100% sure— that most of the decision on his part was business-related. That is, it looks better on your resume that you’re at least nominally a switch-hitting bat coming off the bench, whether or not you are in practice. Whether or how many more dollars went into his pocket as a result of that “S” next to his name in the batting lineup, I don’t know. But those writers certainly seemed to feel it was significant to Kielty.
I don’t presume to know his ability any better than he does. I do presume to know that he has the largest differential in batting averages in the history of the game dating back to 1969 because I read it here. (Note: The article is a year old). The very next paragraph after that factoid points out that no one else comes close. Conceding that average isn’t the best statistic by which to measure a hitter’s ability, I’ll say at least that being the guy with the largest disparity in modern history means you might want to give it the ol’ college try.
"Smokey, this be not the foul jungles of the darkest East Orient. This be ninepins. We are bound by laws."
if just about every team that employs you
suggests that you at least try something (not only “consider” it), and you don’t, you might earn the handle of “uncoachable”. That’s what some had suggested about Bobby Crosby , by the way. During his last two seasons with the A’s he finally did try to listen to various suggestions about altering his batting approach…unfortunately it didn’t seem to help.
I read an update (can't remember where, sorry)
where Kielty said he was trying to get a major league job as a right handed hitting player off the bench, and that he would be willing to additionally be a reliever.
Hey, the guy’s trying…

Well, it is someone that JP hired, so it is still sorta true
I suspect that you think tilting at windmills means something other than what it does.
I'm not expecting too much in return on this one
But I am a little intrigued on why they went the PTBNL route in the deal. Is it possible it could be tied to how Eveland performs with the Bluejays? Like the A’s have two lists of players they want, an A list and a B list, if Eveland makes the Jay’s 25-man roster to start the season they get to pick from the A list, if he doesn’t make it the A’s select from the B list or get cash.
I seriously doubt that.
I think it’s a PTBNL because Billy hasn’t gotten around to reading up on whatever C- scrubs are on the list to choose from. Since Eveland was DFA there was a time limit for consummating the deal. Now he’ll decide on the guy (or cash) at his leisure once trading season slows down. GMs are busy right now. They have more free time after opening day.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

He’s a 6th starter, the A’s have plenty of 6th starters, and he was out of options… the ptbnl will suck or will be some money.

He's less than not good
Everytime I watched him pitch he was terrible. 2 million baserunners per inning. One would think by just watching him pitch that it is enough to know pathetic he is.
There is no STAT invented that could convince me otherwise.
Sometimes you watch a player and form an opinion. Not trying to insult anyone but how the hell can any of you think he is anything but terrible?
He's NOT "less than not good."
He’s exactly not good. But he’s also likely above replacement. I understand the move to DFA him, but he’s underrated on AN.

There are people here who act like Eveland should be pitching in co-ed softball leagues
I’d say at least 80% of AN doesn’t think Eveland is a major-league quality player. That makes him underrated. It doesn’t mean the A’s shouldn’t have left him go, but people are not accurately evaluating him.
