Around SBN: Keith Hernandez Reacts To Gary Carter's Passing

Available Free Agents

Here is my list of Available Free Agents. I don't see any good reasons why they wouldn't be a good fit for the A's.

Rocco Baldelli, Endy Chavez-

I know we don't need any more outfielders, but these guys would be just as good or better than any of the backups we currently have.

Hank Blaylock, Dmitri Young, Carlos Delgado-

These guys are still good even for their age. They would be much better DH choices than both Cust and Buck. Blaylock knocked in 25 HRs last year with an OPS of .736, and he is only 29 so he still has some potential. Young, even at age 35 put up a .280 BA and a .796 OPS in 2008, and an even more impressive .320 BA and a .869 OPS in 2007. Delgado wasn't around for the full season last year but still managed to post a .298 BA and a .919 OPS in 26 games. In 2008 playing a full season with the Mets, he BA was .271 and his OPS was .871, and he knocked in 38 HRs. He would be a perfect DH for Oakland. All those player would. On top of that, they could still fill in at 1B if Barton struggles again and Carter isn't ready yet.

Adam Kennedy-

Why is there no talk of re-signing him. He is good and would be a great infield UT. Could even get some starts over Ellis and Kouzmanoff. He is definitely better than Rosales and Tolleson.

Felipe Lopez-

He is good. Our infielders are bound to get hurt at some point. He is a great backup and he can hit. If needed to DH he can do it.

Pedro Martinez, Jarrod Washburn-

I know we have excellent pitching and these guys are old. But they are both still good and if for some reason their asking prices were lowered to A's standards then I would love to have them on the Team. If your worried about their endurance then throw them in our bullpen. I just want them on the team.

Nah, I'm all for signing Pedro

For a few mill

Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.

The team seems pretty well set by this point

Barring some sort of opportunity for a significant upgrade via trade, I don’t see much else happening from here on out. Looking at the list, the dudes Billy has already assembled can pretty much do the same stuff (or have the possibility to develop and outperform these players).

A's look to be done adding FA's

Unless its a cheap depth pitcher like tomko resigning. The situation with eveland, taveras, petit will be resolved in a week or so. Then the position battle between patterson, buck, and fox. Otherwise, I would assume they are mostly done after adding rosales and gross to fill backup position needs.

Pedro and Felipe Lopez

Would be awesome.

But Id rather see what Beane can get on the trade market with Buck, Eveland, Petit & Taveras. Surely KW will give up a bounty for those scrubs. I mean its a better group than what he got for Swisher int it?

that has been posted so many times that at this point you could just write howaboutno.gif (do a google image search) instead of actually posting it.

(also, please include a subject line next time you post a pic)

If we get Endy Chavez

then we will have two E. Chavez’s!

And three Coco Crisps!

I’m pretty sure Crisp, R. Davis, and E. Chavez are the same guy.

None of the above is the best option

Lopez wouldn’t be terrible but the rest would be.

by DrDoom on Feb 4, 2010 2:21 PM PST reply actions

I AM ABOUT TO BLOW YOUR MIND.

If we apparently have money and are trying to spend it, why don’t we trade for Adrian Gonzalez? We have a glut of 2Bs and OF and P prospects, we could definitely put together a package that can beat anything Boston or Chicago does.

by PL78 on Feb 4, 2010 2:51 PM PST reply actions

What would you give up?

They likely have no interest in a carter, since blanks would take over at 1b.
I guess you start a deal with Taylor, which do-able if they feel like any of the other OF options like carter, brown, doolittle can be decent enough + giving Buck, Patterson a chance. They would likely ask for Anderson, unless you can convince them on hometwn SD native Cahill + other pieces to the deal. Maybe even Sweeney is included.

by MagicMike23 on Feb 4, 2010 3:39 PM PST up reply actions

Eh.

This year is halfway a rebuilding year. I’m not willing to sacrifice the large sum of prospects it’d take to land Gonzalez, all for only two years of team control.

Always the summers are slipping away.
Find me a way for making it stay.

by danmerqury on Feb 4, 2010 3:46 PM PST up reply actions

well thats halfway my point

we could in theory (with all this money we apparently have) trade for him then immediately sign him long term.

At the minimum, Id give SD Weeks, Cahill, H-Rod and C.Brown.

But I would then trade Barton, Buck, Ellis (at the deadline) and a couple other fringe players to re-up the system.

by PL78 on Feb 4, 2010 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

And if he doesn't sign?

We got outbid by lower offers on Scutaro, Beltre, Furcal, etc, etc, etc. Besides, having the kind of money to roll the dice on Sheets doesn’t mean we have Adrian Gonzalez long term kind of money.

Always the summers are slipping away.
Find me a way for making it stay.

by danmerqury on Feb 4, 2010 4:58 PM PST up reply actions

You'd make that a part of the trade

Though I think PL78’s minimum would likely be a non-started for the Padres.

Maybe, I've been thing you guys could get him

Perhaps a package starting with Braden and Taylor. That’s a good start. Don’t forget, your probably going to trade him too, likely at the 2011 ASB. So it’s not like you won’t be able to get at least some of your minor league talent back.

I’d still take Carter, he’s good trade bait to land other talent. Braden, Taylor, Carter….it’s a spicy meatball, indeed.

That would be a truly, epically moronic deal for the A's to make

and would basically ensure that the franchise would miss the playoffs for at least the next 10 years.

Okay, keep Carter

Adrian and Carter become the new bash brothers and the A’s are back to their glory days. I hardly think having those two guys in the lineup with most of your current pitching intact will impact your team negatively. Actually, your back in business immediately, legit threats to the AL west.

When Sheets and Chavez come off the books you will have enough to sign him long term and build your club around both he and Carter.

So Taylor, Braden, and two B minor leaguers.

... or the A's could NOT give away half their farm system

and sign him anyway.

Or sign some other good player.

And have other good players on their team, too.

Id take a flyer on Carlos Delgado

If he is healthy, his 2010 projections are undoubtedly better than Cust’s no?

What a great and underrated player he has been throughout his career.

I miss Chad God

by ChadGod on Feb 4, 2010 7:05 PM PST reply actions

No. How could they be?

Okay, to be honest, I have no idea what they are. But when I see Delgado I see a declining DH-type who looks a whole lot like Jason Giambi did last year. Delgado moving to Oakland/the AL, a year older, and coming off a serious injury? I really don’t know if he’s worth even a minor league contract.

As a matter of fact, I don't think his projections ARE better than Custs

As I recall, his CHONE has him at a below-average hitter in 2010, which (for a DH) is well into fringy-backup-emergency-land.

Fair warning, though, projections are sometimes badly confused by players who’ve missed all or most of a season. I could easily see Delgado putting up another high-800s OPS season.

I'll play along

I really don’t feel that any of those options would help, but if I had to choose one, it would be Dimitri Young on a minor league deal with an invite to camp. He was very impressive in 2007, as you noted, and if Cust or (worst case) Barton go down early, it may not hurt to have a guy like Young come up and DH or (gasp) play a little first instead of having Carter or Doolittle come up early and start their clocks before late May or early June. I only mentioned Young because I feel that he is the most likely of the bunch to accept a minor league deal. Delgado would be preferable over Young, but I don’t think he would even consider a minor league deal given the career he’s had. He’d most likely retire. Lopez and Blalock can also man first, but given their ability to play other positions, I also don’t think they could be had on minor league deals. So simply for some minor league depth with some power, I’d go with Young.

by JustinIcon19 on Feb 4, 2010 9:02 PM PST reply actions

So who do you cut, Mikey?

The 40 man is full and most of the guys you’re talking about are going to get a major league contract. (Endy might sign a minor league deal with Seattle, but probably won’t do the same for another team.) Are any of these guys so good that they can improve the team even after you subtract the loss of whomever they replace?

Rocco Baldelli has mitochondrial myopathy, btw

It basically insures he will never be a full time player. His cells dont produce enough ATP to support a proper energy level. I like telling people this because everyone wants him on their team and they dont know about his medical condition and it makes me feel smart to point it out.

Hmmm...

I think we really need a switch hitter with a bizarre systemic condition to platoon with Powell. Then we can start them both against LHP and RHP.
