A's Resign Brett Tomko, Sign Jason Jennings
The A's signed right-hander Jason Jennings and Brett Tomko to minor-league deals and Jennings reported this morning. Tomko told me he'll drive to Phoenix later this week and report right to a rehab coordinator because he is still working his way back from that nerve injury that ended his season with Oakland last year.
Tomko, of course, pitched for us last year, surprising most everybody with a 2.95 ERA in six starts. Jason Jennings is a 31-year-old RHP who most recently pitched for the Texas Rangers, with a 4.13 ERA in 44 relief appearances. Also from Slusser (via twitter):
Jennings is here [in camp]. A's will stretch him out to start or for long or middle relief.

This makes the A's favorites in the West, right?

Why?
What if they all suck? Nice to have some semi-proven backup plans in the pockets of those who hold them.

Tomko has sucked his entire career.
It’s not going to change now.

Thank goodness the A’s will have Brett Tomko to save the day.

What I like about the Dinardo/Tomko/Jennings troika is that none of them
have to be on the forty man right now, which is important at a time of year when the A’s are unable to use the 60 DL and haven’t started D-ingFA anyone yet. Once the season starts I imagine there will be room for them if they’re needed. Seems like it will work out better than Eveland would have.
What I like about this is it's more competition for the 4th/5th spots
Which may help keep guys like Cahill and Mazzarro in Sacramento.

How long does Cahill have to stay in AAA for another year of team control?

I'm not entirely sure, I dunno how many service days are considered a year of time.
Regardless, he needs to get better before being in MLB again.

21 days
If a player is on optional assignment for 20 or fewer days in a season, he gets credited with service time for the whole year.
Are you sure about this?
I thought 172 days was considered a full year. Or are we talking about the same thing in just different terms here?

YER OOTP IS SHOWING :D

You're both right
Service Time
A player earns Major League service time for each day he spends on the active (25-man) roster or on the Major League 15-day or 60-day disabled lists. A player also continues to earn service time while serving any disciplinary suspension or serving in the military.
Under the CBA, 1 year of service is defined as 172 days. A player may earn up to 172 days of Major League service during a championship season (regular season), which generally lasts 183 calendar days. If a player is sent to the minor leagues on optional assignment for a total of less than 20 days during a season, he receives service time for the entire season.

Interesting
So 172 is a maximum and it = one year, but you could have just 164 days on a major league roster and still get credit for the full year.

Decent moves...
They can both pitch every 10th day as starters or pitch long relief.
We KNOW that pitchers will get injured/cut/traded so having more around never hurts.

Good no-risk signings
Ideally neither of these guys will see any time in the A’s rotation but they are good cover in case of injury. The A’s have some rotation depth but when the 6 and 7 guys are coming out of the group of Cahill, Gonzalez, and Mazzarro you really don’t want those guys riding the shuttle back and forth from AAA.
Whichever of the young guys are sent to AAA you want them to dictate their return with performance. You don’t want to be forced into a situation where you have to promote them when you’re not sure if they are ready. Having guys like Jennings and Tomko around provide a good cushion.

"Peter Gammons systematically ignored and/or ran down the A’s in the pages of Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News for a good ten year stretch in the late seventies and early to mid-eighties. Trust me, the c**ksucker hates our team."
doesn't really matter either way, these guys are just this years version of jerome williams
i’m not sure what the point is (^ aside from winning yet another AAA title), these guys were not really even good back when they were good.

Because it's better to have Tomko be not that good in the majors than Cahill
And, you know, 3 of the 5 projected rotation members have some pretty serious injury issues in their past.
I think both of these guys pitch innings for the A’s this year.

really?
i’ll say one of the two (jennings) pitches for the a’s this year. tomko must first deal with injury issues of his own. this year it’s those two plus dinardo, last year it was edgar gonzalez, jerome williams, and shawn chacon. one of the three pitched for the a’s, 6 starts.
also, the a’s don’t need tomko around to keep cahill out of the majors if they really want to keep him out.

They don't need Tomko specifically. They just need a couple replacement-level veterans

This "need" is contingent on them actually USING said replacement-level veterans
Given the failure to do so last year, I find it questionable at best whether they are likely to do so this year, when the pitchers that they are allegedly buying time for are a year older.

Nah Jason jennings was pretty good on the rockies
Back before they conditioned the infield and the balls and stuff his 5.00ish ERA was as successful as any Rockies player had been at Coors…And he put up a 3.78 there one year. Healthy Jason Jennings is better than suck. But he’s not gonna be healthy probably.
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
I don't mind this move at all.
i was rather pleased at how well Tomko pitched for the A’s last year, even if it was for only 6 starts. Jennings is nothing special but could provide some depth in the minors.
Either way, they both signed minor league deals so I don’t see the harm in inviting them to ST. Go A’s!

It's good to have good veteran pitching
Just in case someone breaks down somewhere down the line. And less reliance on some random dude coming up, oh wait that’s been the A’s M.O. the past couple of years.
