Jane Lee and Mychael Urban
No offense to Jane Lee, she seems to be a decent writer and she seems to work hard and get the basic job done, but from everything I've seen from her so far she has proven to not be very insightful. I have never been a huge fan of Mychael Urban, generally because his biases creep into the majority of his stories, but he does a much better job of getting new and interesting quotes and information in his stories than Lee. He seems to have a better relationship with the players since he's been around and has their respect and trust. I'm sure that would get better for Lee in time, but right now I feel like I'm not getting the kind of inside information that I usually get. That said, MLB.com is never my first source for A's news. Being owned by MLB, it has an ingrained interest in homerism and glorifying everything MLB.
Does anyone know what the deal is with Urban/Lee and MLB.com? Is Lee the A's new permanent MLB.com writer or will Urban be back in the future? SuSlu is still the best A's beat writer around, there's no doubt about that.

I don't know
but, since jane lee has said she is the new A’s beat writer for MLB.com I take her at her word.
Also, since Urban has quit his job at MLB.com, been replaced, and has taken a new job at Concast sports my guess is he in not going back.

Jane Lee is a much better writer. To be honest…. I’d rather have her be on the outside looking in. Urban’s “inside information” isn’t really that inside anyway. He’ll throw out a vague “I talked to Travis Buck the other day, and he say’s he’s not happy…” Really? Thanks for stirring the pot.

Urban and Lee
I disagree with your premise. Urban, at times, seemed to write more like a columnist than a beat reporter. Lee is doing a very good job so far.
Urban is now really a columnist for CSN Bay Area. I doubt he is coming back to mlb.com.
I'm not really defending Urban here
He had his faults as a beat writer, namely his loyalties to certain players and unmoving stances on others. But he broke new stories and developments from time to time, and I really don’t see that in Lee right now. I’m willing to give her some time to develop a better relationship with the players/management and get more of the inside scoop, but right now I don’t feel like she has the ability to do that. Her stories feel so third party to me, like AP stories or something. A beat writer is supposed to get in there and tell us new developments that only they are able to uncover.

In terms of content she does come of as rather amateurish compared to Slusser and even Urban
But she seems to have a good grasp of how to write and report on the basics of what’s going on. Give her some time to develop better relationships with the the players and management. She should start giving better inside info once they’re comfortable with her. If her scoops don’t improve by the end of the season, then there’s cause for concern.
Lee's doing fine,
and Slusser’s one of the best in the country. We’re lucky to have her.

Lee has only been covering the A's since last year, so give her time
Urban’s “insider information” is no more so than other beat writers who have covered the A’s. I believe Slusser has actually had the most scoops of any of the A’s beat writers.

Totally...
I’ll bet Rottoworld is really that Ratto guy!
Who is "Earnie" anyway?
And as long as the beat writers get us the stories they’re supposed to, what’s the beef? It takes time to develop a rapport for anyone who’s new, that much is a fact.
The things Urban and Lee write about aren’t always the same focus anyway.

I will recuse myself, from commenting on this thread, as I have MANY, MANY
times, shown disdain, towards one of the “writers”, you speak of.
This sentence is false.

Not sure what Lee has done to deserve this...
She seems fine to me. More active than any of the other writers on twitter. Granted they all post the same info for the most part.
I never had beef with Urban either though. he was biased towards some players and still is and that does creep into his writing, but I don’t hold it against him.
As far as I am concerned all the media around the A’s is great. We are getting more info this year than ever before. I sometimes wish the comcast team was a little better, but its not the end of the world.
and Lee often includes photos in her tweets, which are much appreciated
while I’ve frequently disagreed with Urban I want to give him props for being extremely friendly and approachable to fans. I’ve enjoyed a couple of very nice conversations with him.
I prefer the photos of Jane Lee herself
forget photos of Eric Chavez with a bat in his hand, or Jack Cust wearing a glove (ugh). I think JL is worthy of photos altogether.

I have been satisfied thus far from Lee
I don’t rely on MLB.com for breaking news, even when Urban was there. To me, thats a bonus.
But I do like that from the articles I’ve read thus far, we have not gotten the painfully fluff pieces that we’ve gotten in the past. The articles have been grounded a bit more into reality, with less wild claims of awesomeness.

Jane Lee hasn't been the MLB.com beat reporter for the A's very long
but she already has gotten some scoops, such as discovering that Rajai Davis spent much of the winter wielding a snow blower (he’d described it earlier as “shoveling snow” — sorry, I know the difference!), as well as finding out that Ryan Sweeney got married in November!
I think she's doing pretty well so far
clearly still learning the team and its intricacies, but thats ok. She writes with a positive attitude, and while some things seem obvious and cliche to hardcore fans, it’s no big deal to me because I miss reading A’s baseball.
It’s a looong season, and spring training reporting is always supposed to make fans feel like their team has a fresh start and a real chance at winning.
