Operation Shakeweight (or How I am in the best shape of my life!, a Fangraph's inspired thread)
Every Year, Spring training comes along and... hell, I'll let Fangraphs say it, as they put it best;
Every spring, there is one constant, a telltale sign of the beginning of baseball, when people are starved for news but there just isn’t any – the "Player X is in the best shape of his life" story... Most of the the time, it turns out to be nothing. The player is what he is, and he plays just like he always has, with his new form never mentioned again as he’s struggling in July. But, I’m sure some players have made legitimate strides in their work ethic this winter, and for some, it might even pay off.
Fangraphs put together a tally for those who are being featured in Spring Training Articles about how this will be the best season ever, and they are healthier than a new born kitten, and how eating all those puppies made them lose 50 pounds, and that the new Ab Abber 2000 (and totally not the extra bit of Hungarian Green Hornet mix they added to their cereal) helped them gain that extra 3 ft of muscle mass. Fangraphs gives a list of suggested themes for these articles, and I think they are a good place to start, though not necessarily to stop at. Personally, I would add "changed something in their swing/mechanics/glovework" to that list as well.
1. Lost 30 pounds
2. Had laser eye surgery
3. Rehabilitated their knee/back
4. Rededicated themselves to the game
5. Found a new passion for baseball
I feel that this would be a very interesting project, documenting the bullshit quota of Spring Training articles compared to the reality of if a player will actually have a good/better season. It might even be graph worthy. But, I feel that Fan Graph's work on it will be buried and ignored, as it may already be.
So I thought of the obvious solution. I've seen these articles all the time as well. I remember them every year. I even, regrettably, read them, and sometimes even believe them! How many times did we think Eric Chavez would be healthy, or Bobby Crosby good, before we gave up? Longer than we'd like to admit. Well, I realized that I am primarily interested in how A's players are with this, and here we have a large community of A's fans, of whom are probably also interested in this, and with Spring Training just starting, are desperate for news, and maybe a nice little project to tinker around with those news stories as well.
So post those articles you have found, and add them as we continue to find them, of A's players who are in the best shape of their life, are going to give it 130% this year, and/or had a revelation of motivation, though preferably about Baseball, not Priesthood.
Hopefully, this time next year, we will have a nice collection to look back on, dissect how the players did, and see what we can expect from Sean Doolittle and his "My knee is the best its ever been, 2011 will be the year" comments.

My favorite
Will always be Nick Swisher article talking about how he was working out in barn, dragging tires etc.
Drinking so much that you forget your name is like trying to cure cancer, it might not be possible, but you should never stop trying.
top story on the rotoworld sidebar right now:
Jane Lee from MLB.com tweets that Joey Devine is way ahead of his rehab schedule and will enter camp with no restrictions.
I don't count that
Thus far, the Jane Lee articles have actually been good as far as this goes. For example, on the A’s page, there are two, one on Landon Powell and the other on Devine, and they basically just talk about them being ready to start Spring training, period. The Devine article just says that he’s going into Spring Training ready to throw, and the Powell article says that he is happy to go into the season with a relatively secure job as the Backup catcher (and backup 1B).
But neither of them give the overly optimistic change my life shine from them.
I don't think this counts either
Both statements (ahead of schedule and no restrictions) are rather objective. There’s no “Devine feels great” fluff we’re used to seeing with Chavez (at least not in that quoted text). It’s simply saying that he’s closer to ready than originally planned and the team plans to treat him as any other non-injured pitcher.

Ive lost 65 pounds this year.
So I know how hard it is to lose 30. Gratz!
"Carter's 25-game hitting streak isn't any normal streak. He's 46 for 97 (.474 average) during the run, adding 16 walks and compiling 81 total bases in the process. I'm out of superlatives for what he's doing." - Kevin Goldstein
cheap one, this
but Jane Lee says Justin Duchscherer
looks great and genuinely says he feels better than great — physically AND mentally.
Also in the article, she seems to allude to him growing a Dana Eveland hipster beard. So maybe it’s not all good news.
I suspect that you think tilting at windmills means something other than what it does.
The ninth fastest thirty year old in San Francisco
Sort of, though that seems to be a routine question based on last year
sort of like asking Harden “are you healthy?”, it goes by rote.
Of course he was shut down for stiffness in his back today, so...yep, this qualifies!

Okay
Who had two hours in the pool?
Leopold Bloom on why he loves Mr. Peter Gammons, his best buddy:
"Peter Gammons systematically ignored and/or ran down the A’s in the pages of Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News for a good ten year stretch in the late seventies and early to mid-eighties. Trust me, the c**ksucker hates our team."
Back surgery FTW
"Their batters are patient to the point that it's annoying." -Ryan Franklin

The best example this year thus far, would be our annual "Eric Chavez, I feel great, I can play this year" rash of articles.
but those have a fair bit of pessimism
because they pretty much all mention that Kouzmanoff will be the main starter at 3b, and also that Chavvy will probably retire if anything goes wrong health-wise.
even julian tavarez "looks good" at this time of year
A's v Giants "is kind of like the difference between going to see the Ramones and going to see the Bee Gees. A's fans will go see the Ramones."

I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
Braden?
Braden, last year’s Opening Night pitcher, will now go third or fourth in the rotation, and he is coming off his own physical troubles. Treatment for an infection led to nerve damage in his left foot, and things aren’t entirely resolved.
“It’s definitely still tingly and numb,” Braden said. “The biggest positive is that the shooting pain isn’t there as often.”
He’s thrown a bullpen session. Could he pitch seven innings or so?
“I’d like to think so,” Braden said. “I wore a line drive off my hand last year and it didn’t matter. Nothing short of amputation is going to keep me off the field.”
"Do I talk to myself? No, I just remind myself of what I'm trying to do. You know, I never answer myself so how can I be talking to myself?" - Rickey
David ortiz last year
boston papers were full of stories about him working hard in the offseason and being in great shape. many also mentioned how hard it is to come back from the wrist problems.
In general, the articles were high on ortiz but he was a FAIL.
The A's. The SWINGING A's. That's right, the SWINGING A's.
