Dave Cameron is bullish on Pennington
Dave Cameron (of USS Mariner and fangraphs fame) writes about Pennington: "If he can show enough glove to stick at shortstop, he’s one of the better young players in the game at the position."
This is very different from the majority of opinions on AN (including mine). But Dave Cameron really knows his stuff, so we can hope that he's right.

Lofty Praise
Most teams would love to have a guy at SS with Pennington’s offensive abilities, […]
Let’s hope so because not even one A’s fan seems to think so.

Until Pennington proves to us he is....
Bobby Crosby incarnate I have good expectations for him this year.
We have been jaded by college drafted shortstops but Pennington has matured and we saw that last season. So I totally give him the benefit of the doubt until someone outplays him or falls flat on his face.

I left a comment on the fangraphs post
asking for a clarification about his Pennington prediction. I think that Pennington can improve and become a useful player — not a star, but a big improvement over Crosby. The problem is that it looks like Pennington had an outlier year last year, with better ISO than most of his minor league career and high BABIP. So even if he improves in terms of his hitting talent, I expect him to take a step backward in terms of OPS, just because he probably won’t get as lucky.
I think we have to observe him for about another 6 months...
…to get a feel for his tendencies but I was quietly impressed offensively with what he did when given the opportunity. I would love for him to make SS not an issue with the A’s for the next several years.
Defensively he is still a bull in a China shop to some degree but I don’t think it isn’t anything Gallego can’t help to improve.
