Mark Mulder retiring (Well, Unless You Ask Mulder)

This is from MLBTraderumors.com via Milwaukee TV "
"Lefty Mark Mulder is retiring, according to television reports from Today's TMJ4 of Milwaukee."

Was a very good pitcher for a long time, although, obviously never quite the same after a rash of injuries.  I actually met him very briefly once and was a very cool guy to speak with.   Former 20 game winner with an ERA consistently in the low 3.00's Mulder was certainly reliable for a stretch of time.  But he hasn't been healthy for 3 years.

Good night funny man

A good career but lots of injuries.

An All-Star caliber pitcher in 2001-2003. Decent in 2004-2005. Only fully healthy in 2001-2002. Fun to watch as he threw strikes, got grounders and moved the game along. I always expected to win when he pitched starting in 2001.

But baseball! Fuck yeah! -- lynnzgal

This is a very sad day for my life as a fan

Mulder was my favorite of the Big 3 and well…he was my favorite player at the time. I’m gonna miss you! Watching video of you helped my pitching in more way than one.

Enjoy spending that 33 million!

To retire at the age of 32 years old…

Come back to Oakland on a minor league deal Mark. Duke and Sheets will be gone be next year or the all star break…

Aw, that makes me sad.

I have fond memories of Mulder for his pitching performances and for this. Maybe he can hone his golf game now.

Haha
The hot tub is broken, but the weather has been so nice they figure they’d spend more time in the pool, anyway. Mulder and Chavez took a trip to Target and stocked up on rafts and flotation devices, along with Nerf balls and other things to toss around — but Mulder said that Chavez, a Gold Glove winner, has thrown most of them over the fence.

“Yeah, for some reason, I lose all the toys,” Chavez said.

Oh, that article is awesome

“‘We usually have beer, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Gatorade and water — and coffee cakes and cinnamon rolls and Marie Callendar chicken-pot pies,’ Mulder said. ‘And tons of chips.’”

You, too, Mulder? Now we can share everything!

It is too bad that he never was able to bounce back from injuries. He’ll always be part of the “Big 3!”. Best of luck Mark…..

One of the best trades in Oakland A's History

But I liked him when he was an A. Bruce Jenkins described him as the “golf pro” of the big three. I think it was meant as a compliment, describing his calm, matter of fact disposition.

Random thing:

Girl who used to cut my hair dated Mulder in high school (he grew up about 10 minutes from where I live now). She was really, really hot. Mulder was pulling great tail even in high school!

I don't think he had to do much "chasing"

If anything, he had to beat the women away with a stick. And some of them liked it!

Its weird how 3.5 seasons of good baseball

makes for a “long time”.

I’ll never forgive him for taking a dump in the 2nd half of 2004 and almost singlehandedly killing our playoff chances. 2001-mid2004 = good times though. Glad we got good players for him, imagine if Beane didnt trade him? We’d be up the creek with no paddles in sight.

At least now we wont have to hear from people hoping “we will take a flyer on him” ugh he’s been done for YEARS now.

by PL78 on Feb 15, 2010 12:53 PM PST reply actions

I don't blame him for the 2004 failure, but...

…I do blame the manager for starting him over Blanton in that last start. Blanton was doing well, Mulder was clearly not, and it’s the manager’s job to start the pitcher with the best chance of winning a critical game, not bow to the more established player.

by UncleLeo on Feb 15, 2010 2:51 PM PST up reply actions

Here's why I blame him almost entirely for 2004

1. We missed the playoffs by 1 game.
2. His ERA month by month:
3.00-3.00-2.74-5.11-5.14-8.79
3. He needed to pitch well in just 1 of his last 7 starts to get us over the line and he couldnt. Instead he was beyond pathetic in them.

by PL78 on Feb 15, 2010 3:18 PM PST up reply actions

not fair at all

yes, he sucked in the second half of the season, but our bullpen blew a tremendous number of saves that year. if you want to relive that horrid season, read Aces. It’s like having teeth pulled. We lost so many winnable games that year that it is totally unfair to pin it on one of our starters. our bullpen was a total disaster for most of the season.

I responded below

Not that he wasn’t a GREAT starter that year, he was!! But he melted down in Sept., when it counted, and someone should have seen the signs. We basically threw away four or five games on his starts, when he CLEARLY wasn’t 100%.

Hear HEAR!!!

Goodness gracious, do i approve of this message.

There is nothing that irks me more than managers playing ALL YEAR only to make a crucial foolish decision based on “he’s my guy,” or some such.

Yet, most managers think that way. I’ve yet to hear any excuse for it. All that time put in by sooooo many to maximize the season and often things like “he’s my guy” come into play, ruining it for all.

Deswho?

Mulder was supposed to be the happy-go-lucky playboy, right?

Something about imagining him signing kids’ baseballs with messages written to their mothers disclosing his hotel room number just feels so right.

Keep on keepin’ on, my man.

Just imagining

Mulder retiring bums me out. I once had dreams that Hudson/Mulder/Zito would become the 21st century’s version of Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz. I hope that Mulder at least comes back and throws a few more years.

by tas7b on Feb 15, 2010 2:40 PM PST reply actions

That news bums me out a little bit...

…I know he had a lot of injuries, but I can’t help but think that he had some other issues as well. And his starts for the last month or two of 2004…? just killed us. We missed the playoffs by one game. Any of his starts he could have kept it together…hindsight, I guess.

I really wanted him to be good, and he was…and then he could never get it back. I truly feel sorry for his potential…I think it ended too soon.

just to repeat: mulder did not keep us out of the playoffs in 2004

if anything beane deserves a lot more blame for trying to pass off arthur rhodes as a closer. that year 8 relievers combined to blow 28 saves. we only converted what i can only assume to be a league worst 56% of our saves that year. with any semblance of a real bullpen we would have run away with the division. of course it sucked to watch our most dependable starter turn to mush down the stretch, but it’s not fair at all to blame our playoff miss on mulder.

Zito: You ever think about the space time continuum?
Huddy: Uh... no.

by mendelbob on Feb 15, 2010 3:31 PM PST up reply actions

It's not completely his fault, no.

He won something like 17 games that year, so yes, he was more a positive than a negative. However, he absolutely melted down during his last 5 starts, when any one of them would have given the A’s the lead. He was absolute crap during the September run, and if it WAS injury, and not in his head, then he should have let someone know so Blanton could have made a start or two. Being down by a grandslam before the A’s ever came up to bat in the most important game of the 2004 season was someone’s fault; either Mulder was secretly injured, or he was tired, or had other stuff going on, but he had four or five chances to win one more game for the A’s, and didn’t make it out of the third twice or the fourth once. He shouldn’t have been in there, and someone should have known it.

Can't really blame Beane too much for Arthur Rhodes.

That whole offseason sucked. Foulke strung the A’s along before he bolted to the Blowsox.

I agree that he was crap,

but if the A’s had had a real bullpen throughout the year, that last series against the Angels wouldn’t have mattered. comments (in general) that allude to the one more game he could have won down the stretch could just as easily be redirected to the one more save that didn’t get blown. We squandered many opportunities to put the division out of reach independently of how bad Mulder was at the end.

Zito: You ever think about the space time continuum?
Huddy: Uh... no.

by mendelbob on Feb 15, 2010 5:28 PM PST reply actions

I don't disagree with you at all, but...

…by the time it came down to that last series of the season, the situation was what it was, and they NEEDED that game. Granted, Blanton was a rookie, but so what? He was also pitching very well at that point, and Mulder was clearly not.

I know that if Blanton had pitched and lost we’d still be complaining that Macha blew it by starting a rookie, but I’d like to think that the more rational fans among us would understand that Blanton was pitching well and was a better chance to win than Mulder at that particular point in time.

re "(Blanton) was also pitching very well at that point" --

He had made 2 appearances, both out of the bullpen, totaling 4.1 IP. I can see why the A’s didn’t elect to throw him into the fire to start that game.

Was that more IP than Mulder's 2 previous starts? LOL

If Mulder had been merely “shaky” or “inconsistent”, I’d agree with the decision to start him. But no, he flat-out sucked for quite some time by that point and could not be depended on at all… which was demonstrated.

Still pretty young..

Relatively for a pitcher, especially a lefty. I wouldn’t be shocked if in 2-3 years he decides to try and come back. Not that he has to, he made enough and might be happy with his career….but obviously most of these guys love to compete, so unless he rather make the PGA tour, I can easily see him giving it another try.
