A's in on several; D. Lee, Vlad, Willingham...
According to Ken Rosenthal and Paul Morosi the A's are in on several bats still including Vlad, Matsui, Derek Lee and Nick Johnson (ewwwww). They are also looking at trading for Willingham, though the asking price is said to be "absurd" at this point. Links:

Who does everyone like off of these lists? I personally would only want Matsui if we can't get Cust back, or one of the other DH's were supposedly looking into (aside from Nick Johnson). What is it gonna take to get Willingham and are we willing to give that up for a rental??

Had to change the title real quick
Originally just had “Lee” with no D. in front of it. That could have sent people in the wrong direction!

they should just be gung ho about finding bats.

I think he'll come relatively cheap
Also, with the large amounts of money to Beltre and Iwakuma no longer a factor, they can easily add a starter and two bats.
You really want to go into next year with a competition between Bobby Cramer and a possibly injured Tyson Ross
for the fifth starter spot?
Keeping in mind that every one of the top four has also been on the DL in the last three seasons?

Official Athletics Nation Rotating Tagline Editor
Pam liked my old sig better.
I'll be pissed if we don't sign a FA starter
Not because it is our most pressing need, but because we get shafted by some batters for having a pitcher’s stadium. If the Beltre’s of the world want to sign in Boston to rebuild value before re-entering the FA market, then I think we have to take advantage of pitcher’s attempting to rebuild value.
That reason, plus I do actually think we need another starter.
"Juuuuust a bit outside" - Harry Doyle
Nick Johnson....is that a joke?
unless you’re looking for someone to lead your team in trips to the DL I can’t see any reason to sign that guy.
None of these guys get me all that excited but that’s about par for the course at this point.
But seriously, folks....
I would take Dan Johnson back b4 Nick Johnson
2010 he walked 25 times in just 140 PAs while striking out 27 times. He also hit 7 home runs. It is not a stretch to say that at age 30 he may have figured something out to become an adequate major league hitter. Not to mention he inspires the community to ghost-ride their car.
If you liked Carter's 0fer last year,
You’ll love Dan Johnson!

Well, maybe he can start yoga training tradition w/the younger staff now that Buck and Harden don't need the movitivation
Just took a more detailed look: He has homered once every 24 ABs, again not particularly impressive but not awful either. And what is impressive is that in 1429 plate appearances he has walked 190 times and struck out just 208 times. Not claiming his offensive skills are at the major league level. His career OPS+ is 103, not good for a first baseman but still not indicative of a failed MLB career.
That .401 OBP (lifetime) would look pretty good in the 2 or 3 whole
Not so much in the black hole of the trainer’s room though. I’d like the pick-up if the pay was incentive based
Not sure about Lee
He had a very bad year last year. His swing was very slow. Vlad or Matsui are better options.
I would rather sign Rickey Henderson than nick johnson.....

What if we look at these guys and think about which two we want
They all have their warts, but if we sign two (which we can absolutely afford now) that would mitigate a whole bunch of risk and provide even more upside.
"Juuuuust a bit outside" - Harry Doyle
Well we could only aquire two guys off of this list
if one of those were Josh Willingham. He’s the only one of the bunch that would play defense (at least I really, really hope). That said, i’m with you if we were able to aquire Willingham or another 2.5+ WAR outfielder without really overpaying. I think having solid 2.5-3 WAR production out of the OF corner spots would go a long ways for this team considering the bulls**t we ran out last season.
I’m still hoping Magglio Ordonez is being considered. If Beltre and Iwakuma are indeed off the board, we should have plenty of $$ to sign Maggs and any of the DH options. Yes his defense isn’t great, but it’s passable and his bat would be a solid upgrade over any of our other options. Any guess’s on what it would take to get him? I don’t recall hearing any numbers on him yet. 2/18? For us maybe 2/20??
I can't disagree with 2/18, 2/20 for us
Given his recent production and age they both seem reasonable to me. But I haven’t looked into it all that much.
Oh, and for 2/18(20) I would be happy to sign him.
"Juuuuust a bit outside" - Harry Doyle
I'd be most comfortable with Matsui
he’s been in the AL his whole MLB career. Derek Lee scares me because he is a career NL guy, good fit for the Padres IMO.
The A's are a fairly quiet team, and then there's Ben Sheets. Sheets, as a kid, must have been thrown out of every library in Baton Rouge. ~ Scott Ostler
Willingham would be nice
for the right package of course. I’m starting to get on the Ordonez bandwagon as well so I’d be fine with either of those guys for the final OF spot.
Of the DHs not named Cust I’d be fine with Matsui at this point. His production is alright and he would bring at least a little international attention to the team.

I actually would pay Duke $1 million to make 5-10 starts.
At least you know you’d get quality starts 90% of the time.
He should just sign one of those Roger Clemens deals with a contender in June
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
Ya know...
…even I’d sign Duke for $1m on August 31st. Providing he hadn’t pitched competitively anywhere yet that season.
Billy Beane... What have you done for me lately?
I'd never be able to say no to Johnson and his career .401 OBP
How much could he cost in the first place? He played 21 games last year. Or, you know, they could just re-sign Cust.
I REALLY don't get the Nick Johnson hate
He is one of the best hitters in the American League, period. If he’ll ever stay healthy, it’s at DH and if he doesn’t then well, you obviously want to have Plan B ready. But geez — take every PA he can give you.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
On paper...
…it looks great to sign all the great fragile-as-glass players and then have an almost as good Plan B… but it almost never works out that way. What seems to happen more often than not is we sign Mr When Healthy, he breaks, we act all surprised, then we suffer through the rest of the season with some scrub. I really think it’s a better strategy to get a guy who can reasonably be expected to stay healthy even if not quite as good.
Billy Beane... What have you done for me lately?
Getting a good Plan B is easier said than done, especially as a DH
It’s tough enough to get quality players to come to Oakland already, imagine trying to sell a potential DH on coming to Oakland to be a pinch hitter who can’t run or field a position and just wait for Nick Johnson to get hurt. It’s a pretty tough sell and that doesn’t even consider that using a bench spot for a DH-in-waiting is an even bigger waste of roster space than a DH platoon. And if you plan on getting a guy who you can stash in AAA and also be a decent Plan B for Johnson that’s an even tougher trick to pull off.
Here's an "easier done than said" solution: Jack Cust, RF.

Pay. Him. What. He's. Actually. Worth?
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
Of course, if you plan on getting Cust back
Why not just make him the DH and try to get an upgrade at RF? Rather then play Johnson and Cust and then have to find a replacement for Cust in RF when Johnson gets hurt. This doesn’t really solve the problem, just shifts it to a different position.
Johnson will be cheap and incredibly good (while healthy)
An upgrade in RF will be far more expensive in talent or $$$.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
I'd still prefer trying to pay the higher price
I don’t think Ryan Sweeney starting right fielder is all that great a plan B for when Johnson gets hurt.
Johnson is like a super-Cust.
Count me in. Obviously, we couldn’t roll without a backup option, but they could figure something out.
Maybe regular Cust could be our backup option.
You know, like, having a major league viable team when things go wrong? That would be cool.

I support this plan.
I’d like Derrek Lee considerably less than Johnson/Cust, and Matsui even less. I hope Matsui was more or less just bait to attempt to lure Iwakuma to bring down his asking price and sign with Oakland, because Matsui isn’t really that good of a player anymore.

Wasn't braden sent down (the era where he had a Afro?)
Suzuki, Devine, Swingles might all be tied? My quick search confirmed that out of current roster over last 3 seasons within the A’s organization none of them have been sent to the minors other than on rehab assignments. That is what qualifies tenure IIRC from conversations on here.
Suzuki came up in the middle of the '07 season
Sweeney and Devine came at the start of ’08.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton
I believe Braden's first callup was after Suzuki's
In any event, he bounced between Sacramento and Oakland for most of 2007 and 2008. Suzuki definitely has the longest (non-Ellis) continuous tenure in Oakland, at roughly three years and four months.
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
Thank you for the clarification
I wonder where in the league this team is, regarding tenure (or lack thereof)
Well, the A's overhauled the entire roster, bar a handful of guys,
between mid-2007 and the end of 2008. It’s hardly recognizable as the same team.
Since then, the team has actually been quite stable.
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
Johnson hit 8 HR last time he played a (semi) full season.
By “super” do you mean he can hit even less HR than Cust can?
8 HR but a .426 OBP
Why not sign him to an incentive laden contract based on PAs? I’d advocate doing something similar with Duchscherer- maybe a million base salary with escolators based on IP or starts.
I like the idea of brining in McCarthy to be the #5
He is still only 27 and it would be a low risk, high reward signing. If the he doesn’t work out we have internal options for the #5 such as Outman, Ross, Mortenson etc…

Is anyone else watching mlb.tv?
Kenny Williams is absolutely insane.
Beane was on yesterday, and as usually showed us that he would be the charming dinner guest we all thought he was. But KW, holy shit that guy is not right.
At this point...
insanity is having a better offseason than charming….
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
meh
He makes offers for and tries to trade for almost every player ever, he gets more hits because he’s always ready to deal. He has this weird look of mania in his eyes, he’s has all the demeanor of a cliched Texas oilman saying things like “TELL ME I WONT TRADE FOR PEAVY! YEE-HAW!”, and he looked like he was going to fight them all if they didnt shut up about Ozzie. All he’s missing are some guns and big hat.
Wow
Um, I am no longer interested in the A’s acquiring Luke Scott.
Seriously, he can go fuck himself.

Barry Zito probably believed the same stuff.
BUT…..arent we not supposed to talk politics on here? Shut it down….
Not when it directly relates to baseball issues, we aren't

I'm not exactly sure why this matters

The point of the politics ban is to keep the discussion focused on baseball
This is focused on baseball. Thus, no problem.
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
I see it as a potential problem
like, what if there are posters on AN who agree with him? That’s when it turns into persona; politics. I appreciate the share (and it made news all over the place yesterday) but you saying he can go “fuck himself” shows your personal politics (that dont relate to baseball). Share it by all means, but what you think of what he said isnt about baseball at all.
Saying that I want the A's to not acquire him, and that I want him to fail miserably at hitting and invest his money in some scam and go bankrupt,
also shows my personal politics, and that’s clearly baseball related.
There cannot possibly be a ban on everything that might give a hint as to one’s political preferences. Half the site would be banned if that was the case, including most of the moderators.

Are you living in a dream world in which most players AREN'T complete idiots and/or have misguided, imbecilic views?
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
My question is exactly this...
It isn’t just the politics that bug me. His take on the 2nd Amendment is not cometely batshit crazy. It is the disdain for acquired knowledge that is clearly displayed in his self assured statements of facts that ain’t. Obama birth certificate/DC highest crime rate. Sort of reminds me of some anti Oakland rants I hear from folks who have never been to Oakland. Fuck that guy with a telephone pole.

I'm just not sure why this is so surprising.
Most baseball players are total numbskulls. I mean, if you can only stomach rooting for them if they are acceptable on a personal level, then I reckon there are very few ballplayers you can root for.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
If the dumbest thing one of our players does is say "No homo," I can live with that.
If the dumbest thing one of our players does is say Obama wasn’t born in the US, I can’t live with that.

Conundrum: what if Brett Anderson said something like this tomorrow?
What would you do? Stop rooting for him during his starts? Advocate a trade?

by lenscrafters on Dec 7, 2010 10:08 PM PST up reply actions
Fortunately, the Bay Area media has widely avoided asking him such questions.
But Brett seems like a guy who, while from the same cultural and spiritual territory as Luke Scott, doesn’t bother with even Luke Scott’s level of political awareness, which comes in handy when you don’t want a guy accusing the President of fraudulent election.
I can’t see Luke Scott taking cash-money-ho’s pictures and putting them on Twitter, is another way of saying that.

I mean, anyone who said something as dumb as that would instantly vault to the top of my most hated A’s players list, but that’s just personal preference. As far as actual baseball? I just care about actual baseball talent.
Yeah, seriously

I agree, though. I worry that a redneck with fringe viewpoints like that could be a clubhouse cancer, or just have a rough time with the media and the community. This is the Bay Area, after all.

That's quite possibly the worst interview with a baseball player I've ever read.
Ironically, right after I just listened to an interview of Curtis Granderson, who might be the most well-spoken and educated baseball player I’ve ever heard.

Reading that makes me sad
because we could totally go out there and crab Matsui or Cust, grab Duke, grab Beltran, grab Beltre…we could do all of that. And we’re probably going to settle for Vlad’s corpse, Brandon McCarthy, and, like, Edgar Renteria or something like that.

Vlad's corpse huh??
He would have led us in AVG, HR and RBIs. And you would rather have Matsui or Cust over him? I really don’t get it!
Anyway, i respect your opinion. So, i am going to ask you this question; i have been reading discussion that the A’s possibly signing McCarthy would mean that we would move one of the big 4 starters we have. Do you see that happening? And which one?
Personally, i believe the signing of McCarthy would be to fill the #5 spot, but i don’t know how much better he is than Outman, if any better. If the A’s were to trade a starter from the big four, my choice would be Gio Gonzalez. Simply because he has a nice amount of trade value and could land us a power hitter in return.

Well, since AVG and RBIs mean nothing to me, you're not convincing me of much.
I would totally rather have Matsui, who will be a more legitimate hitter in 2011. And I’d rather have Cust than either one of them, who was better in 2010 and will be better in 2011.
i have been reading discussion that the A’s possibly signing McCarthy would mean that we would move one of the big 4 starters we have. Do you see that happening? And which one?
I hope that’s not what it means. We need SP depth, so unless we’re adding Cliff Lee (or, more realistically, Clayton Masterson), I don’t see adding a starter and subtracting a better one. However, if that’s the way things go, I pray to Xenu that it will be Cahill who is traded. He has trade value but not real value.

You forget that Oakland hitters play in Oakland, and Texas hitters play in Texas.
Meaning, you have to adjust the numbers quite a bit, because of the parks. Vlad was outhit last year by Cust, Barton, Ellis, and Crisp. And Matsui, too.
Why can't we re-sign Cust??
Somebody needs to ask Susan Slusser about why Beane isn’t interested in bringing back his best hitter over the past three seasons??
BRING BACK CUST…
