A's in on several; D. Lee, Vlad, Willingham...

According to Ken Rosenthal and Paul Morosi the A's are in on several bats still including Vlad, Matsui, Derek Lee and Nick Johnson (ewwwww). They are also looking at trading for Willingham, though the asking price is said to be "absurd" at this point. Links:

Who does everyone like off of these lists? I personally would only want Matsui if we can't get Cust back, or one of the other DH's were supposedly looking into (aside from Nick Johnson). What is it gonna take to get Willingham and are we willing to give that up for a rental??

I think he'll come relatively cheap

Also, with the large amounts of money to Beltre and Iwakuma no longer a factor, they can easily add a starter and two bats.

I'll be pissed if we don't sign a FA starter

Not because it is our most pressing need, but because we get shafted by some batters for having a pitcher’s stadium. If the Beltre’s of the world want to sign in Boston to rebuild value before re-entering the FA market, then I think we have to take advantage of pitcher’s attempting to rebuild value.

That reason, plus I do actually think we need another starter.

I would take Dan Johnson back b4 Nick Johnson

2010 he walked 25 times in just 140 PAs while striking out 27 times. He also hit 7 home runs. It is not a stretch to say that at age 30 he may have figured something out to become an adequate major league hitter. Not to mention he inspires the community to ghost-ride their car.

Well, maybe he can start yoga training tradition w/the younger staff now that Buck and Harden don't need the movitivation

Just took a more detailed look: He has homered once every 24 ABs, again not particularly impressive but not awful either. And what is impressive is that in 1429 plate appearances he has walked 190 times and struck out just 208 times. Not claiming his offensive skills are at the major league level. His career OPS+ is 103, not good for a first baseman but still not indicative of a failed MLB career.

"Juuuuust a bit outside" - Harry Doyle

by ArunisArun on Dec 7, 2010 9:59 AM PST reply actions

Well we could only aquire two guys off of this list

if one of those were Josh Willingham. He’s the only one of the bunch that would play defense (at least I really, really hope). That said, i’m with you if we were able to aquire Willingham or another 2.5+ WAR outfielder without really overpaying. I think having solid 2.5-3 WAR production out of the OF corner spots would go a long ways for this team considering the bulls**t we ran out last season.

I’m still hoping Magglio Ordonez is being considered. If Beltre and Iwakuma are indeed off the board, we should have plenty of $$ to sign Maggs and any of the DH options. Yes his defense isn’t great, but it’s passable and his bat would be a solid upgrade over any of our other options. Any guess’s on what it would take to get him? I don’t recall hearing any numbers on him yet. 2/18? For us maybe 2/20??

by JPShark on Dec 7, 2010 10:17 AM PST up reply actions

I can't disagree with 2/18, 2/20 for us

I REALLY don't get the Nick Johnson hate

He is one of the best hitters in the American League, period. If he’ll ever stay healthy, it’s at DH and if he doesn’t then well, you obviously want to have Plan B ready. But geez — take every PA he can give you.

On paper...

…it looks great to sign all the great fragile-as-glass players and then have an almost as good Plan B… but it almost never works out that way. What seems to happen more often than not is we sign Mr When Healthy, he breaks, we act all surprised, then we suffer through the rest of the season with some scrub. I really think it’s a better strategy to get a guy who can reasonably be expected to stay healthy even if not quite as good.

Billy Beane... What have you done for me lately?

by UncleLeo on Dec 7, 2010 6:20 PM PST up reply actions

Getting a good Plan B is easier said than done, especially as a DH

It’s tough enough to get quality players to come to Oakland already, imagine trying to sell a potential DH on coming to Oakland to be a pinch hitter who can’t run or field a position and just wait for Nick Johnson to get hurt. It’s a pretty tough sell and that doesn’t even consider that using a bench spot for a DH-in-waiting is an even bigger waste of roster space than a DH platoon. And if you plan on getting a guy who you can stash in AAA and also be a decent Plan B for Johnson that’s an even tougher trick to pull off.

by OkayJay81 on Dec 7, 2010 6:36 PM PST up reply actions

Of course, if you plan on getting Cust back

Why not just make him the DH and try to get an upgrade at RF? Rather then play Johnson and Cust and then have to find a replacement for Cust in RF when Johnson gets hurt. This doesn’t really solve the problem, just shifts it to a different position.

by OkayJay81 on Dec 7, 2010 9:17 PM PST up reply actions

Johnson will be cheap and incredibly good (while healthy)

Why not sign him to an incentive laden contract based on PAs? I’d advocate doing something similar with Duchscherer- maybe a million base salary with escolators based on IP or starts.

I like the idea of brining in McCarthy to be the #5

He is still only 27 and it would be a low risk, high reward signing. If the he doesn’t work out we have internal options for the #5 such as Outman, Ross, Mortenson etc…

Also, i wonder how serious the A’s are in acquiring Vlad. That would be the big bat we have been lookin

Vlad's corpse huh??

He would have led us in AVG, HR and RBIs. And you would rather have Matsui or Cust over him? I really don’t get it!

Anyway, i respect your opinion. So, i am going to ask you this question; i have been reading discussion that the A’s possibly signing McCarthy would mean that we would move one of the big 4 starters we have. Do you see that happening? And which one?

Personally, i believe the signing of McCarthy would be to fill the #5 spot, but i don’t know how much better he is than Outman, if any better. If the A’s were to trade a starter from the big four, my choice would be Gio Gonzalez. Simply because he has a nice amount of trade value and could land us a power hitter in return.

Well, since AVG and RBIs mean nothing to me, you're not convincing me of much.

I would totally rather have Matsui, who will be a more legitimate hitter in 2011. And I’d rather have Cust than either one of them, who was better in 2010 and will be better in 2011.

i have been reading discussion that the A’s possibly signing McCarthy would mean that we would move one of the big 4 starters we have. Do you see that happening? And which one?

I hope that’s not what it means. We need SP depth, so unless we’re adding Cliff Lee (or, more realistically, Clayton Masterson), I don’t see adding a starter and subtracting a better one. However, if that’s the way things go, I pray to Xenu that it will be Cahill who is traded. He has trade value but not real value.
