Reacquire Blanton?
I was just reading Ken Rosenthal's column on the potential availability of Joe Blanton and at two years and roughly 16 or 17 million that is a pretty fair deal for a good inning eating pitcher such as Blanton. Plus with Philly apparently only wanting salary relief it could be practially a no risk move considering it would only be for two years and keeps our options open for other things. Would seem like a very good option to fill the 5th starter role (with him actually somewhere around a 3 or 4 starter in relative quality.) What's AN impression on this idea or reacquiring Country Joe? Thanks.

I don't particularly want him at that price, to be honest.
But if we don’t get Beltre and we have money left over, sure.

I hope your wife handles the check book, sir
because thats like wanting a steak dinner, not getting it, and paying 15 bucks for a chesseburger and fries
It sounds good to me
But I think the A’s have already decided to fill that slot with some combination of McCarthy/Harden/Ross/Outman/Cramer, with McCarthy and Harden on the inside track. It’s not impossible, but pretty unlikely.

I thought this was over at the 5th starter thread?

had no idea. just thought of it myself. I still like Blanton better than any of those names on the list Eddie just mentioned. Far more of a reliable bet. And maybe he throws up a 2007 quality year again and you essentiall have a #2 starter for #4 prices.
Yes, he's a 2 WAR upgrade on the current 5th starter dreck for a lot less money
than the 2 WAR upgrade Beltre is over Kouzmanoff

In the years past I've always considered
that the A’s should sign Livan Hernandez, for the exact reason that I now think Blanton looks pretty good: It would seem that the A’s are unable to go a year without 2+ starters hitting the DL, and an inning eater who stays healthy sounds like a solid addition.
Though I do think that Outman should have been expected to be the fifth starter the whole time, I was under the impression that he’s got the talent if he’s healthy.
Except that Livan's no better than the McCarthys and Cramers he's replacing

That's true
But do guys make more money playing in the bigs than in the minors? I was going to say we’d be paying 1 guy instead of 2-3, but really those guys would just be in the minors so maybe that’s not true, but if major league salaries are larger than minor league ones than maybe that is true…
I just saw that McCarthy was dealt for Danks way back when, so at one point in time he must have been pretty highly regarded right? I feel bad for Cramer because it would be a good story if he became a big league regular but competing with Outman, Ross, McCarthy, Harden and whoever else it just doesn’t seem like it’s gonna happen, right time wrong organization for him. Unless EVERYONE gets injured?
And last bit I think that Livan would go longer into games than all those guys he’s replacing. McCarthy, Outman and Harden with injury history, and when Cramer pitched it just looked like he wasn’t trusted enough to go more than 6 or so. That can be tough on a bullpen over a long season, so I would consider the ability to pitch deep into games to be pretty valuable. Plus it seems like the A’s will be cautious with any/all of the young 3.
Just my 2 cents.

There is no comparison between MILB and MLB salaries
Minor Leaguers make a minuscule amount of money compared to what they’d get even just on a base MLB salary.

Thanks for clearing that up

I always thought that described Jason Kendall.
Blanton seems more the “Elmer Fudd just ran into a wall” kind of guy.

Give him a break
He plays baseball well, seems like a nice guy, and he stays out of trouble; I could care less what he looks like.

I don't think anyone cares what he looks like.
I just think that people believe that objectively, looks aren’t among his assets.

Joe has very smooth skin
The smoothness of his skin allows him to very durable by reducing friction.

I’m not going to object to him being on the team because I find him unattractive. To prove that, let me just say I love Adam Rosales!

But Adam Rosales IS cute.

I would love to get Blanton back as the 5th starter.
Hopefully, this would squash any Harden starting fantasies. Harden, for health longevity purposes, should relieve. I think he’d last longer that way.

$8 million a year for a 5th starter?
No thanks. And I don’t think Blanton’s numbers warrant him being higher in the rotation. If the Phillies agree to eat a decent chunk of his salary and give him to us for basically nothing (C- prospect/filler), that’s different. Otherwise, we’d be better off investing the money somewhere else.
like what?
no fa will sign with us!
So that means trades.
Acquiring Blanton would be cheaper than if we had signed Iwakuma. Might as well grab him for free, and upgrade the rotation even more.
Also, since we have a rather delicate rotation health wise anyways, we might as well get Blanton for stability too, since he’ll end up more than likely being the 4th starter later in the year anyways.

no need
unless they gave him up for nothing.
we have some good pitchers on staff.

Blanton >>> McCarthy
It’s a legitimate upgrade.

not a need.
and blaton has not been as good as he once was.
there will be competition for the fifth spot. McCarthy is not guaranteed that spot.

What do you mean "not a need"?
Let me clarify: Blanton >>> Whoever wins the #5 spot. By “>>>” I meant “not just better, but a lot better.” Blanton is still a solid #3, as is Braden. To have one of them in the #4 spot and one in the #5 spot is really, really solid.

yeah
We should definitely blindly trust a guy coming off major surgery with half a season of success two years ago. No need for an upgrade, whatsoever. We’ve got Outman.
nice.
Apparently
The Phillies are looking for a lefty reliever. Craig Breslow and a scrap prospect for Blanton? Anyone? I’d do Breslow and Mickey Storey or something along those lines. If Philly is as desperate for a good LH reliever as they are to offload Blanton’s salary, maybe it would work.

Or Blevins, whose peripherals are better than his basic stats.

I don't think the A's would have to give up so much
If they want to deal Blanton for salary relief, Oakland should just try to screw them as hard as possible if they’re desperate, right? Give them someone with no major league experience and an established ceiling.
Just looking at his ERA Breslow is quite good, and depth is a necessity IMHO with all the injuries the A’s get every year. I feel like there’s more depth in the rotation than the bullpen right now, so Breslow probably has more value to the team than Blanton.

We need blanton
He can teach Cahill and Anderson good eating habits
Those 3 would make a heck of a 5-man rotation!
