Timing is everything. I've heard that a couple of times and it seems to me that in the Iwakuma situation it's all the more so.
So, the 30 day negotiation window with Iwakuma ends on December 6th, the start of the Winter meetings. As I understand the posting rules if we fail to sign Iwakuma to a deal we get back the posting fee...approximately 19.5M according to various sources/blogs. My thoughts are that if they don't reach that deal with him they take a significant chunk of that newly freed up money and throw it at Beltre. He's the number one target this off season and he'd be hard pressed to turn down more than 5/62 with the pitching and defense this team possesses. I guess we'll know more tonight as nontendermas comes and goes. The outcome of the Winter meetings I believe depends heavily on whether or not we sign Iwakuma. If not, we have a lot more money to throw at a significant FA acquisition and perhaps land Beltre or even Werth. If we do sign Iwakuma to a three year or more deal I really believe Billy looks to move a piece of the rotation and some tangential pieces for the outfielder we are in need of and perhaps another SP. I really like the idea of trying to get Choo and Masterson for one of our SP's and some prospects if Cleveland will deal but there's nothing out there supporting that I believe. Thoughts on the Iwakuma negotiations and the course of the Winter meetings?
