Some of the donuts look to be swinging a lot more than I would expect. What kind of sample sizes are we working with on the donuts?

Yeah, maybe you could put the sample size inside the donut hole.

Yup, noted that above
I have placed a breakdown in every zone, although some have few samples…

Most of them have 20-50 swings, although some of the high location / off speed ones have less. Putting the sample size inside the donut hole is not a bad idea, but it would mean more work now. I’ll keep it in mind for the next time, should I use this visualization again. For now, you are best off if you look at it as a sort of a heat map.

Question

There’s been a bit of talk about how Cust changed his approach last season. (Maybe you heard something about that?)

How much work would it be for you to compare Cust’s 2009 data to 2010? Specifically, how did he handle the inside fastball in ’09?

The monster at the end of this blog.

by grover on Dec 13, 2010 12:45 PM PST up reply actions

Not all that much work, but it would still take some time

I need to spider the Gameday files from internet and that takes couple of hours, so I probably won’t be awake when it finishes, meaning I can not start the parsing script till tomorrow. Once the data is in the database, I can extract it rather quickly.

I too would find the idea interesting, so I might do it tomorrow, if I can find a little time (I think I should be able to).

If you're just looking to update your PitchFX database

Go here. I actually started working with the raw xml in R, but since the code’s already been done (in Python), no need to spider the data if you don’t have to.

Can't do that

First, I run an MS SQL Server and not mySQL. Second, I have designed my DB a little different and parse little more data than Mike Fast and these guys do. So I need the original XML files.

And, if the info on that page is correct, I seem to be much faster in importing the data in DB. They talk about improvement from 5min/ game to 30 sec/game. Once I have the XML files, I need about 3 sec/ game.

by elcroata on Dec 13, 2010 2:50 PM PST up reply actions

I think this makes sense as Cust puts a ton of top spin on the ball when he pulls it. Therefore less carry. When he goes the opposite way he can’t put top spin on the ball, and therefore drives the ball much better.

by Slide Giambi on Dec 13, 2010 1:38 PM PST up reply actions

I'm resigned to this Matsui impending fiasco

I have nothing new to add, but I’ll hope that Matsui can repeat his 2010 performance. I have my doubts, but I suppose it’s possible he completely defies aging and park effects.

Somebody needs to convince Billy Beane to make a strong push to get Rasmus. The Cardinals might say he’s not available publicly, but with LaRussa assuming more and more power and Rasmus’ father summoning Ed Crosby, I’m confident he can be had.

The other thing that clearly makes Matsui appealing to the A’s is the fact that he will bring in a lot of additional revenue. I stayed out of the financial aspects of the (possible/probable) deal, because grover et. al. know much more about such things. Canseco supposedly came from a very family that had some degree of money. It could be rubbish but I don’t know for sure. Still hard to believe the guy blew all of his money that he made over the years.
Bottom line is it’s really a sad situation for him and he has no one to blame but himself.

it shouldn't be surprising

bankruptcy is actually the norm for pro athletes. 78% of NFL players file after they’ve been retired for two years, 60% of NBA guys after 5 years, and in one three month span last year, 400 pro athletes pawned championship rings:

It actually says
By the time they have been retired for two years, 78% of former NFL players have gone bankrupt or are under financial stress because of joblessness or divorce.

Even so, that’s still astounding. Seems like the union ought to have a program for this. Make it set up a trust designed to pay them, say, $50K/year after their career ends. That way even if they manage to piss away everything else, at least they can live a decent middle-class life afterward.

by iglew on Dec 13, 2010 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

good correction, and you're right, the point still stands

I work as a financial planner. I don’t have any big time pro athletes as clients ( a couple minor ones though). But I do see this kind of problem.

I see four groups of people out there who make tons of money – entertainers (incl. athletes), super high salary businesspeople, entrepreneurs, heirs/heiresses, and lottery winners.

The entertainers, heirs/heiresses and lottery winners usually blow their money, the business types usually keep it, and entrepreneurs usually only lose it by investing in a losing business.

I always wonder what the difference is. I think the main thing is that success in business comes very slowly and requires financial discipline and the ability to say no, whereas sudden wealth – even if hard earned in the case of athletes and entertainers – causes rapid behavior changes and is not accompanied by financial discipline.

All good agents know this and have teams of very qualified financial counselors and planners to work with their clients. The clients simply ignore the advice.

You hit the nail on the head in terms of a solution. Short of a league – mandated savings scheme with very limited withdrawal rights (i.e. a really rich pension) there is probably no way to fix this problem. However, the leagues will not do it if the unions don’t ask, and the unions are not looking for this since their members do not want it. They want to spend and mismanage their way to ruin.

It’s sad, but impoverished former pro athletes stand relatively low on my list of worthy causes . . .

Is it spring yet?

Great job!

by thewhizkid on Dec 13, 2010 3:18 PM PST reply actions

I was just thinking about

How our biggest changes this offseason so far (assuming Matsui signs) are Cust to Matsui and Rajai to Dejesus.

I think 2011 will provide a team that is much harder to pitch to in these 2 cases. Both Matsui and Dejesus have much longer track records.

One key stat for the DH battle are their respective career splits vs LHP

Matsui (1320 PA)
BA OBP SLG OPS
.287 .349 .460 .809

Cust (589 PA)
BA OBP SLG OPS
.225 .350 .372 .722

PS Great post

Same OBP. So, you're saying SLG just doesn't matter?

"Feel so bad, feel like a ballgame on a rainy day"-Lightnin' Hopkins

by justANotherAsFan on Dec 13, 2010 4:16 PM PST up reply actions

OK, but you see OBP is essentially equal and there's a BIG difference in SLG

So, SLG would have to be MUCH less important than OBP to make the difference ‘marginal’. Marginal implies there’s virtually no difference.

Saying the difference is lower than it appears is not the same as saying the difference is only marginal is what I’m saying.

"Feel so bad, feel like a ballgame on a rainy day"-Lightnin' Hopkins

by justANotherAsFan on Dec 13, 2010 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

Also, wOBA vs. lefties for career

Matsui .352

Cust .326

Had the difference been in on base percentage exclusively (almost 90 points of OPS), the difference would have been over 60 points of wOBA… just trying to get the run scaling to look more accurate.

by rebus on Dec 13, 2010 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

Really?

Sample sizes
~2 years of PA’s for Matsui and ~1 year for Cust

88 points of slugging for Matsui

1 point of OBP (aka equal) for Cust

With those splits I’d much rather have Matsui at the plate vs a LOOGY with runners on base than Cust where a walk is less valuable than a single.

RIVER CATS: AAA CHAMPS!

by niallmack on Dec 13, 2010 4:19 PM PST up reply actions

As far as samples go

I think you’d prefer to have ~2000 plate appearances for handed splits. So factor the fact that it’s 80 points of slugging, and that there is still a decent margin of error estimating true talent (it’s a range), things are closer than your presentation.

Using wOBA, I’d wager Matsui’s probably .340 to .360 and Cust follows somewhere between .290 and .340. General ideas of course, and it’s still not really a very wholesome manner of looking at hitters.

by rebus on Dec 13, 2010 4:48 PM PST up reply actions

My presentation?

You guys are loony.

I made a passing comment that Matsui hits lefties better based on career splits against them. The debates on this site have gone a little overboard.

Those sample sizes are nothing.

Like rebus said, you need a ton of PAs. For lefties, it’s 1000 against RHP. Two years is nowhere close.

Ultimately, they believe that Matsui will outperform Cust next year.

And this post is good, it makes me think that the team is internally creating graphs, charts, and analysis like this.

But why does it seem like nobody’s mentioning the obvious about Cust: maybe Billy just didn’t want him. Cust was certainly unhappy about his treatment in Oakland and was ecstatic to go elsewhere. Perhaps there were enough doubts about Cust’s future performance that Beane was fine jettisoning a player who he no longer wanted to deal with personally.

this just blows me away.

See, the thing is, I was thinking of asking for your help- I was hoping that you would be able to analyze whether or not my theory that Spartacust has a smaller zone that he will swing at than the strike zone itself could possibly be supported by the data…

So, I was trying to figure out how you might analyze it, which data would be required from PxP etc, just yesterday,

And, here today, you have done something very different using the same data!

So, yet another request for you to do even more!

Round One shows the zones divided by height. round Two shows what happens when they swing at pitches in each of the 13 zones. Round Three of course shows where the balls put in play or out of the park go…

I’d so love to see a Round One-and-a-half, where the zones are divided the other way, ignoring the height, but focusing on whether they are inside or outside:
Outside and not over the plate, Outside portion of the plate, Down the middle, Inside portion of the plate, Inside not over the plate. You could run the same bar style, but vertically… So, in the event you ever have time to parse the data that way I think it would add to all our comprehension.

And thank you again! Awesome work.

Great Job, el croata

This confirms what many teams saw when comparing these two players. The juxtaposition relays why Cust would never be a good #3 (not enough contact) and why Matsui was considered “clutch”. The amount of contact determines increased opportunities not only for outs but “productive” outs and …hits.

Poor Cust was non-tendered two years in a row and teams didn’t necessarily come crashing down his door for the reasons/trends you displayed.

Matsui fits right into the “best aging veteran DH available” that the A’s could sign. Many could argue about others being better, the problem is Beane couldn’t sign those players.

So where does a player of Matsui’s abilities land in the lineup? Opportunities to drive runners home or move them along places him no higher than 3rd and no deeper than 6th.

Let’s hope that Dejesus, Crisp, Barton and add your favorite to the top 5 will be on base to take advantage of Matui’s skills…all 36 years worth of them.

Flash just isn’t Matsui’s style, even if the conservative [Tokyo] Giants hadn’t frowned on such outré displays. Instructed to stay in the team dormitory and refrain from dating during the first several years of his career, so as to devote all his concentration solely to baseball, Matsui agreeably complied, without so much as a whimper. Indeed, his only eccentricity, if it can be called that, is his extensive private library of adult videos. His refreshing ability to laugh self-deprecatingly about his porno collection, reporters say, is one reason why fans and even nonfans have taken to him so much. Says former reporter Isao Hirooka: “Hideki just wants to be like ordinary people.”

then drafting 12th or so. The Phillies have a several year window, following which they will likely pay tons of money for suckitude for a couple years and accumulate high draft picks. Sounds like an acceptable strategy to me.

I'm curious if Lee will get any flack from the players' union

I remember there was some pressure for Sabathia to take the biggest deal, or at least milk the most he could out of a team (if he preferred one in particular). The fact that he’s leaving potentially $40-60M on the table could be of interest to them again…

So the Angels look screwed

We get Matsui, Lee to Phillies, and if Beltre goes to the Rangers, the Angels are left with what? Guerrero again?

by duballers23 on Dec 13, 2010 9:18 PM PST reply actions

I think Beltre will either sign with the A's or Angels

I doubt he wants to go to Texas and play in that heat. The A’s really need to step up for Beltre.

by TBRMKane on Dec 13, 2010 9:20 PM PST up reply actions

Seriously

Beane needs to look at this signing as a huuuuge win for Oakland.
If he can get Beltre to Oakland, we may actually have a shot at this thing now…

If you're gonna give him $54M over 3 years

You might as well give him 2 more years at 8 per. He won’t have to do much more than be a 2 WAR player at that point to still be worth the last 2 years of the contract…

More info:
The Yankees’ offer to Cliff Lee was 6 years, $138 million, with a seventh-year player option for an additional $16 million; total $154

Olney

Lee deal is for five years with an "easily reachable’’ vesting option for a sixth year. Not sure on $$, but it’s in excess of $100 million.

I never know what to do

Thanking every person separately for their nice words seems overly courteous, not doing so might seem rude.

I read and very much appreciate every nice comment and I am very thankful for all of them. I am also very grateful for every idea about how my analysis can be made better and I take notice. Many such critique in the past has led to what are now, hopefully, better presentations. I still remember monkeyball’s comment on my very first post here — looking at it now, a very poor post indeed — where he mentioned something to the extent of fruit collection and heat processing in regards to the data I used. That, too, made me try harder in the subsequent ones.

Having said that, I hope you will not hold it against me if I don’t broaden this specific research as many of you have requested, looking at different zones or more years. I agree that these are fantastic ideas, but I only have two more days left before my hand surgery and a real job to do, too. And trust me, those guys are even more demanding than AN. I will try to squeeze in grover’s request and compare Cust’s 2010 and 2009, but that is really on the very high end of what I can afford to invest in this over the next few days.

Thanks again for all the nice responses.

Thank you again for all the hard work

And, uhh, as they say in show business (it is meant to defuse bad luck) break a leg!

Someday, when my brain grows up (not likely now, at 61, I guess), I wanna be able to make pretty charts and actually organize data in useful and meaningful ways, but since that is unlikely, I’ll stick to devouring every elcroata Post.

You’re the best!

I should probably refrain from snark immediately after you said you'd look into Cust's 2009 data...

Hand surgery?

What’d you do, borrow Matsui’s porn collection?

You can go ahead

because I am not sure I’ll be able to do it tonight. But you’ll get it eventually, just ask mikev what kind of great interest he got on his four graphs.

I have couple of fingers bothering me to the point that I not only had to give up free climbing, but have problems with basketball and volleyball, too. Even doing everyday things around the house, like opening jars or picking stuff from a table, is often painful and sometimes impossible endeavor.

So, I’ll have it cut up, cleaned and hopefully more functional. But, even if it’s a Mickey Mouse surgery, I won’t be able to drive to work or to do much in the lab or type fast. That’s why I need to put in a little extra work before then and why it (right now) seems unlikely I’ll be able to parse more data (especially as I found out that MLB changed formats between 2009 and 2010). Sorry.

No need to apologize

Anyone who can’t play basketball or volleyball is facing punishment enough.

Someone did, but that’s OK. 51 was my jersey number for last 10 years and even made it my license plate. Also, my little cousin won his first points in skiing World Cup wearing a BIB 51

and this post just confirms it. I love the Godzilla signing.

Dubrovnik is, by all means, amazing

History, culture, nature, buildings… In my (very subjective) list it is one of the 3-4 nicest places in Europe. If you have the time, hit the islands, though. The further away from the coast, the better. You will not only be in a new and a different place, but in a different time, as well.

Well,

I feel better! You (and Dan) have a way of making things so easy to understand. And your charts and graphs are pretty, too. Thanks, babe!

In summation...

Even though Matsui is on the downside of his career, he is still better than Cust.

I wholeheartedly agree.
