Dan Uggla
Anyone interested in acquiring Dan Uggla? He could play Third, Second, Lf?, DH, and has some pop. I do not know what we would have to give up. I know they just upgraded their bullpen in the Maybin trade.
1. Do you think we should trade for Uggla?
2. If so, what would you be willing to give up?
I think personally I would be willing to give up Mortenson, Sweeney or Davis, and another piece.

Hears the latest rumormongering on Uggla
Florida’s asking for a pitcher and a catcher.
Donaldson and Ross?
The monster at the end of this blog.
I'd do that times a thousand.
But seriously, Suzuki and Ross? Suzuki and Mortensen? I’m more than happy to ship Suzuki out.

I'm not
I know there’s no way to really quantify Catcher Defense other than SB%, but the pitching staff raves about Kurt, and I still think he could be a fine bat.

I don't see why the Marlins would even entertain that deal
Uggla isn’t much of a defender, but he’s an “impact hitter,” whereas Recker and Mortensen are mostly regarded as “potential filler.” The Marlins can get much more for Uggla if they shop him.

I really don’t see a way they can get “full value” for him, whatever that might actually be.
However, I also don’t really want any part of Uggla playing defense for the A’s, so I think it would be a mistake to trade anything of substance for a slight upgrade at DH, especially one that’s going to cost $10M in salary as well

What about dealing Suzuki, Mortensen, and Ross for Uggla, then trading Uggla for a 3B?
(Or Suzuki and Kouz, or some combination of Suzuki, Mortensen, Parker, Outman, Ross, and/or Kouz.) Anyone think the Padres would bite on a Uggla-for-Headley trade? If Uggla’s gettable for not a lot, it’s worth doing, but not for the A’s. We have a cheaper DH who’s pretty close to as good, and you can’t put Uggla in the field. But if we could spin him for Headley, we get a big improvement on Kouz at 3B, we replace Suzuki with Lando/Donaldson, which equals a small salary dump and probably not much dropoff in production, we cut loose a couple pitchers that we don’t really need, and suddenly we’re looking at an infield of Barton/Ellis/Pennington/Headley (Rosales backup INF), an outfield of Jesus/Coco/somebody, Lando/Donaldson at C, and a still-pretty-good pitching staff.

I think that he’s got great upside and is a good dark horse candidate for the 5th spot in the rotation if he’s healthy and not traded next year, but I REALLY hope that Romanick (sp?) works on his mechanics a bit. Dude really needs to use his lower body more, he could be generating some more velocity pretty easily and if I recall he didn’t start pitching until high school.
A 3rd pitch (splitter, maybe?) and a slightly less damaging throwing motion should be the priorities for him.

Why so big on Tyson Ross PT?
Just curious, I know he showed some promise but I’m a little scared by his control problems and even more concerned about his delivery and his injury last year, which may or may not be related to his ridiculous mechanics.
Like I said, just curious about why you would be opposed to a trade for Dan Uggla, even if it were to include Ross.
And another question since I’m not really looking up stats at the moment….do you think Uggla, were he to just mainly a DH if he were to come to the A’s, is really not a huge upgrade with his bat by itself? What I mean is, if here were not really counted on to be anything other than a DH, is that not something that a potential 9-11 million dollar salary for his services make him worth his production, offensively? Me, I’m digging his bat for sure.

Uggla is probably a worse hitter than Cust at the DH spot
He’s a great deal better than Kouzmanoff offensively (2 wins or so), but lord knows what his glove would play like at 3B, a position he’s never (so far as I know) played before. He’s much more expensive than either of them.
What exactly am I missing here?
As for Ross, he’s done pretty well as a starter in the minors and he’s got MLB stuff. It’s enough for me.

What you might be missing is that Uggla projects as a 3-4 WAR player at 2B and if he's
anything close to that at 3B, he’s a 1-2 Wins better than Kouzmanoff. He’s not a lot more expensive in 2011 than Kouzmanoff. I really don’t care about Ross since he’s a relief arm at this point, with a questionable arm.

Cust was better in '07 and '08
But now?
I think Uggla’s going to be the better bet in 2011.
The monster at the end of this blog.
Weighted WAR of the last three years
Uggla: 4.19
Ellis: 2.5
Uggla looks like 1.5-2 win upgrade for the A’s. The difference in salary is looking like 4 million. The A’s are at a point where each win makes a lot of difference. Ross looks like a replacement to slightly above pitcher in 2011 and that’s obviously the most important year in the deal. I think one certainly has to entertain a Ross for Uggla and Ellis package.

Kinda OT
But if the A’s are really interested in signing Berkman, why not just let Powell DH. I know he’s slow as hell, but I think if given the chance, he could probably outhit Berkman next year.
I hear that a lot -- that Powell could be a really good major league hitter
Often overlooked is the fact that when he plays, he really doesn’t hit very well at all. Granted, he gets very sporadic time, but it’s not like he “makes the most of it.”

Especially if it turns out that Uggla actually can pretend to play 3B.

Trade for Kemp, and sign Beltre, and voila:
Crisp – CF
Barton – 1B
Cust – DH
Beltre – 3B
Kemp – RF
DeJesus – LF
Suzuki – C
Ellis – 2B
Pennington – SS
Holy crap, that’s not a bad lineup! And yes, Cust has been re-signed to DH because it makes so much effing sense.

That’s at worst, average, and at best, top 5. No, seriously. AND, it’s extremely strong defensively.
Exactly - no defensive compromise
And presumably Anderson, Cahill, Gio, Braden, Iwakuma are intact along with Bailey, Wuertz, Breslow, Devine et al.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
Let me go further.
Crisp: .320 – .350
Barton: .340 – .370
Cust: .340 – .380
Beltre: .320 – .370
Kemp: .320 – .370
DeJesus: .330 – .360
Suzuki: .290 – .320
Ellis: .300 – .330
Pennington: .300 – .330
Do those ranges seem about right for low/high possible wOBAs? If so, that’s around a .320 at worst and a .350 at best. The Yankees this year had a .347.
Kemp and Beltre
That sounds like a really good team. It doesn’t sound too outlandish either. Maybe we give the Dodgers Ross, Davis, and Outman. Maybe it takes 5/65 to land Beltre. We would likely be carrying a higher payroll than 2010, but hopefully that would be doable. Do these deals sound reasonable?

The A's can always relent and add
“ZOMG he throws 100MPH!!!!!111” Henry Rodriguez — a guy more appealing to acquire than to actually have. Kouzmanoff, Davis, and Rodriguez could potentially get it done, considering they are all relatively cheap, Kemp isn’t, and the Dodgers are looking to reduce salary in order to pay for all the McCourts’ many lawyers.

Honestly, I'd probably rather trade a different bullpen arm.
It’s probably unfounded and he’ll probably not work out, but that one appearance when Rodriguez threw like 11 pitches, 9 for strikes, and K’d the side? Yeah, that’s hard to trade.

What if Beane and GM x got together and laid out a plan to collude together? Oakland gets the strength of two teams in 2011-2014 (while the other team gets all the prospects), then in 2014-whenever, the other team gets the ML parts while Oakland gets the minor league parts.

Besides, it’s a huge risk for the other team that there wouldn’t be serviceable MLB parts for them when they were ready. Or, they flat suck anyways and don’t want the ML parts.
