Will the A's contend in 2011?

Oakland Athletics

Star-divide

The A's show every body that they can pull a .500 record, last season.  But, can they improve?   With a few areas to improve, maybe, and the A's could finally reign supreme in 2011.  Offense, is a must, if the A's want to contend.  Pitching has been superb, and defense was above average.  Hopefully, the new coaches, they hired, will  be helpful.  Some players to maybe pursue this offseason:, (maybe, right)

I already tried to bet on the A's to win the 2011 Series in Vegas

I was there last weekend. They told me I could not bet on the 2011 series until the 2010 series was done. Every time I go to Nevada I put some money down for the A’s to win the WS that year. One of these years I am going to be right.

So then I said, “what can I bet on?” They said, tonight’s game. It was game 1 Giants vs Phillies and it was 3:2 phillies, a $10 bet would pay 15. I thought, the odds can’t be THAT much in favor of the Phillies can it? Lincecum vs Halliday. Well I won $15 bucks.

Although I am quite often overly optimistic, I really do think the A’s can contend in 2011. I thought they could win the west until about the time they got swept in New York, then NY went to Texas and got swept. I’d get some bats in the outfield, although upgrading anywhere will be enough to contend. What does contend mean? 90 wins? I would guess most people who know baseball think the A’s can win 90 next year. Not that it is a lock but they can do it.

my plan - trade or release BEANE

Billy Beane is bored or pathetic
To keep a first baseman who hits 10 home runs because he loves his defense — the least important defensive position on the field, manned by any big lug — makes me feel hopeless about next year already. If the A’s had not trade any two of the following, they would have won the divsion: Carlos Gonzales, Nick Swisher, Carlos Pena, Andre Ethier, Ryan Ludwick.
Beane has not developed a real top-hitting outfielder ever and has made some of the worst free-agent signings ever, consistently (every one last year was a total waste of money).

My plan for this year — try to sign Pena or Werth, but given little chance, take a flyer on Ordonez and trade young pitching, prospects for DAN UGGLA (33 hr’s) to replace Ellis and
ADAM LIND as DH. Barring injury, offense will at least be respectable. Kevin Correia would be a nice fifth-starter also. Not sure Braden is ever going to be that good.

Indeed.

Left out “Jack Cust is the worst hitter on the team” and “We need Jason Kendall back.”

Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!
