Adrian Beltre Signs with Red Sox, According to Yahoo! Sports
It appears like the dream defense we've all be drooling about is officially off the table. According to Tim Brown from Yahoo! Sports, Beltre has signed with the Boston Red Sox. I'm not sure exactly what the Sox are going to do with Mike Lowell now, but hey, it's baseball so the rich get richer.
The A's are looking more and more like they're going to be dependent on a completely rebuilt Eric Chavez, Jake Fox or Adrian Cardenas. Or maybe even Adam Kennedy.

My gut feeling is that Lowell might end up an Athletic.
I neither want it nor think it’s a good idea, but my spidey sense is tingling.

I think the plan Last year was for Nomar to step in when Chavez hit the 60 day DL, then Nomar would hit the 60 day dl and chavez would be back. But with Chavez, McPhearson and Lowell, one of those 3 will be healthy at least untile may 17, then we’re foxed

I have no idea.
Maybe Hairston/Buck get traded. I really don’t know right now, but it’s pretty fucking strange that Coco Crisp can be offered a free agent contract when there are a shitload of outfielders on the roster already, but the goddamn black hole that is third base in Oakland can’t be pursued with a bit more vigor than going out and hoping Jake Fox or Dallas MacPherson will suddenly figure out how to play.
They call their best player "Kung Fu Panda" and they complain that people aren’t taking them or the game seriously enough? -Nick
The thing is...
there were multiple reports stating that the A’s pursued Beltre and Scutaro and Furcal last year and even offered more overall guaranteed money and years to each one and still wound up losing the bidding for all three. I don’t think that the problem is “they don’t realize what a huge hole they have on the left side of the infield and aren’t aggressively wooing the best available free agents for these positions”…I think they’ve actually done that on a number of occasions.
I’ve never been a huge believer in the “no one wants to play in the shithole Oakland Coliseum and live in the East Bay and that’s why we can’t sign free agents” type of mantra…that’s horeshit to me when people consider that the whole story.
But perhaps three straight losing seasons, an uncertain future as regards to the venue, a propensity for management to trade away proven players AND a shithole stadium conspire together to make it a bit tougher for the organization to compete for premium free agents even when they have the need and offer up the cash.
I'm never gonna do it without the fez on!
The real story
is that Wolff heard that Beane offered 3/36 plus a team option for another year. Boras gave a tentative OK, but he had to check with Beltre.
Before Boras could get back to beane, Wolff pulled the plug because it didn;t fit the narrative of no free agents wanting to sign in Oakland.
One step closer to San Jose.

I'm on board.
He fits into the “all defense” team were all talking about, and he can still provide some occasional pop. He was my next choice behind Beltre.
Problem with Kouzmanoff is
he is a very valued member of the San Diego Organization, and thus would likely cost a pretty significant package to obtain. Inge on the other hand probably wouldn’t cost nearly as much in the way of prospects. The difference in performance between the two isn’t too significant, while the difference is costs to obtain them likely would be.
Not true, Padre fan here..just in case the handle didn't give it away.
Kooz could be had for a relative bargain. We need a CF and I think a straight up deal for Hairston would be enough to get it done.
I don’t know why the market has been soft for him. The guy made 3 throwing errors all year! He just does not throw the ball away. I’d take a steady fielder over the occasional webgem diving stop. Not a ton of range but his rock steady fielding more than makes up for it, IMHO. A .990 fielding percentage would fit in real nice with your current team. He comes in choppers and throws across his body as good as anyone. He’s the kind of guy no one really covets but everyone needs.
I don’t know if Beaner would trade Hairston back though. Might be tough on the pride. The arms we got were ridiculous. I’d trade Headley too. But he gets unwarranted love in the Padre organization for some reason so thats probably not happening.
Hairston for Kooz? Do Want?
I'd do Hairson for Kouz without thinking twice about it.

What about Felipe Lopez?
He’d be worth a shot in the dark at 3B, at least he’s, like, lodged big league innings there in his career and in recent times and was okay with the bat. He’s gotta be better than Fox/McPherson.
Either Inge or Lopez would be a less miserable option than what we have.

I'm guessing you never played much baseball
Anybody who has played shortstop in high school or college baseball like myself knows sliding over to 3b is not a big deal. Very commen for older shortstops to move to 3rd —
A-Rod, Rico Petrocelli, Ripken, etc. The real issue is getting him at the right price.
You're guessing wrong.
Regardless, Ripken and A-Rod weren’t nearly as good at 3B as they were at SS. Just because they can go there and play doesn’t mean they SHOULD.
There’s also the fact that he can’t hit anymore, but that’s another story.
They call their best player "Kung Fu Panda" and they complain that people aren’t taking them or the game seriously enough? -Nick
I'm actually coming around to the idea of Tejada for a year till Cardenas is ready
Somers and Zimmerman project him at -4 at SS using UZR, so he might be something like an average 3B. He’s basically an average baserunner, and CHONE projects him as an average hitter, so he’d be something like a 2 WAR 3B, and he could be the backup SS, eliminating the need for Miles. If he’d take a 1 year $5M deal or something, it’s not ridiculous.

If you think he can hit .270/.329/.375 like CHONE
does, and believe his UZR at around +5 in CF and Dan Fox that he’s a +7 or so non-SB/CS baserunner, then he’s a 2.7 WAR player that’s very cheap and under control for 4 more years. If he can replicate what he did in the 2nd half of 2009, he’s an all-star.

Hrrumph...
We’re not losers, we’re rebuilding. The As will rule in a year or two. But even winning in Oakland won’t bring out folks who have East Coast big money options, right?
The A's not signing Beltre is not the end of the world
and I was not even all that excited about him becoming an Athletic anyway. I think many of you have a pretty good reasoning about why Beltre didn’t come to Oakland and why should you be surprised? This has happened before and you know what? Fuck it!
I know Billy Beane is trying to make something happen and if guys don’t wan to come here as FA’s, even if they are possibly offered more money here than from some other competing suitor, then fuck them!
I’m an A’s fan and I am not about to start crying in my soup bowl because some asshole decided that he didn’t want to come and play baseball for the Oakland Athletics. Nothing personal on Beltre, he’s probably an alright dude, but nothing lost either, in my opinion. It’s just business…….
Time to move on to the next order of business….

Regardless of whether or not we had signed Beltre...
I am hoping that BB finds a way to match up with KW on a trade that nets us Brent Morel. If Juan Pierre fails to produce in a full time role, the White Sox don’t have much in the way of internal options who could fill the void. Assuming Raj. Davis continues to be a valuable player- he would probably be someone that KW would covet as a speedy CF’er who can bat leadoff.
Cardenas would still be our number one internal option. However, Morel would represent a strong plan B- in the event Cardenas can’t cut it at 3B or he is needed to play 2B if Weeks busts. Morel seems like a player with a relatively high floor whose ceiling may be higher than most people realize.

Maybe Corey Brown.

I'm not suggesting Davis for Morel straight up...
obviously, if Davis continues to be a valuable CF’er then the White Sox would have to kick in other players. But Davis is someone that you could see KW asking for, and I am sure, in that situation, BB would require Morel in return.

Who else would we get?
Unless it’s Dan Hudson or Jared Mitchell, I’m having trouble seeing a match.

Depending on how much, if at all, Davis regresses....
You could throw Tyler Flowers into the conversation… Santos Rodriguez is an interesting name as a high upside pitcher who could see his stock increase significantly by mid-season next year- which is probably when a trade such as this would occur. Trayce Thompson is another player who may not look overly special now but whose stock may rise significantly by midseason.
The White Sox system strikes me as one that could look significantly different come mid-season due to the fact that they have various high ceiling prospects- Juan Silverio- who have high ceilings but either are too young or have not yet tapped into their potential.
by casualinquisition on Jan 4, 2010 7:07 PM PST up reply actions
I Doubt Hudson would be included in any conversation for Davis...
even if he continued to produce like he did in the second half. I could be wrong, but Hudson is turning into a stud and BB would jump at the opportunity to make a Davis for Hudson trade straight up.
Jared Mitchell seems like the type of player that KW would value more than BB would- so BB would likely focus on other names in order to maximize the potential return.

Yeah but the thing is....
KW probably likes Mitchell more than any of the other prospects. so, if it was Davis for Mitchell or Davis for Flowers and Morel… I would take the Flowers/Morel package.

What is with this weird fantasizing about a guy who's like the 20th best prospect at his position in the minors?
Despite his fungal nomenclature, he’s not even a B- prospect. I’m not sure he’s even a C+. As far as I can tell, he’s just a slightly-closer-to-the-majors version of Michael Spina or Steven Parker.
O'Hara: Detective Lassiter is literally on fire.
Spencer: What kind of fire are we talking about-- "Michael Jackson in the Pepsi commercial" fire, or "misusing the word literally" fire?
1 year makes more sense to him than 2
next year he is the only FA 3b worth a damn. So since he will rebound this year, he likely will cash in. Like Oakland Si says with that stoopid wall he might be able to up his counting stats t make dumb GMs think he is even more valuable.
"The ego, the super-ego, and the Ed" - danmerqury
I think all GMs understand park-adjusted stats.

Yeah, I agree
but there is the sell it to the guy who is writing the checks phase of the negotiation.
"The ego, the super-ego, and the Ed" - danmerqury
Though IMO
There is a disputed area. Though everyone knows Colorado inflates stats, a GM (I’m not mentioning any specific GM) might have overvalued Holliday last year…..There is gray area to how much a park can or can’t add to statistics. I read once that the coliseums foul territory costs a hitter 7 points on their batting average but there’s still a grain of salt that needs to be swallowed.

Doesn't the short-money deal for Beltre sound odd?
Was Beltre caught between a low-money, multiple year deal with the A’s and a short-term deal with Boston? Maybe Beltre has other issues, or Beane really feels the in-house options are better in the near-term, or maybe there’s a deal out there that couldn’t be made because of the Beltre availability. I think it’s pretty risky for a player, with a limited productive period, to assume the economy will be any better next year, or that he will escape injury, or whatever. Think of all the one-year free-agent deals last year. Have those players profited to any great extent? This deal for Beltre is perplexing, but I am relieved he is not the A’s problem. I also hope the A’s pass on Mr. Chapman.
"There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact." - Mark Twain, Life on the Mississippi
I don't think the deal sounds odd
He is going to be the best free agent 3rd baser next year too. I think the shoulder really sapped his strength last year and most doubts about his hitting ability (whatever you may thinnk of his walk rate) will be allayed .
He was looking for four years, but nobody was biting. this way, if he rebounds and has a good year with the bat, he likely will get the 25 extar million he was looking for this winter.
"The ego, the super-ego, and the Ed" - danmerqury
it's a chance
He’ll be a year older next year, and his assumption is that he is going to tear it up. AND even if he does, some teams might be reticent because he’ll have done so in a hitter friendly park

So beltre turned down other offers
http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/red_sox/i ndex.php/2010/01/04/beltre-turned-down-more-money- to-play-for-sox/
The deal was agreed to in principle on New Year’s Eve and finalized on Sunday night. Beltre turned down more money from at least two teams – he had a four-year offer early in free agency and then a three-year deal for roughly the same annual value as the deal the Red Sox offered – but he chose Boston with an eye on having a big year for a contender and then hitting the market again next year.

Process of elimination
A’s was the only known other offer from a team. With some outside interest with angels, orioles too. A’s pulled their offer today, so estimating it couldve been 3yr/$27million.. So A’s offered higher contracts in terms of years and total money to both scutaro and beltre, both opted for Boston. Cant really blame their decision, but it is frustrating to see. Throw in Jamey Caroll, who also opted for a bit less money from Dodgers.
Don't care about Jamey Carroll
or Scutaro really.

Reports are
The A’s pulled their offer. Other words Boras was most likely trying to use the A’s in a bidding war and Beane said screw this. Beltre was never much of a team player. It will be good that we didn’t sign him since I don;’t see him as a difference maker for the team. More money now to sign that cuban kid.
More than likely the cuban kid isnt signing here either
The A’s only sign the sick, old, or injured: piazza, thomas, embree, springer, giambi, crisp, loaiza and many others

bummer
I was actually warming to the idea of Beltre, and it would’ve been ideal to get him at the same that Boston apparently has – that would’ve been the win/win. No long term baggage; an opportunity for him to rebound, become a Type A / B FA after the first year, or get traded to contender.
I am tired of hearing that we make a higher offer and don’t get the guy, though if true, I’m glad we pulled the offer after it looked like we were being played by Boras. 3rd Base last year wasn’t great…but really, a lack of offense was the killer, and Beltre wasn’t really going to solve that. Maybe Fox / McPherson hit really well, and field like Adam Kennedy…that wouldn’t be so bad if they start crushing the ball…
And, I do like the idea of Chapman, so if this free’s up some loot to up the offer (but not overpay), I’d like to see that happen.
Kouz wouldn’t be so bad either, though I don’t know about his fielding (how old is he?)
"I saw a curveball, that’s about it," Rangers’ manager Ron Washington said. "You can’t take anything away from the kid; he went seven innings, but it wasn’t any shutout stuff." - Ron Washington on Gio's performance and the 7 k's.
Kouzmanoff is 28
According to UZR he was a so-so defender before 2009 when he apparently became a really solid third baseman. He also owns a .308 career OBP and is playing in National League. I don’t think we should waste resources on this guy when it’s not even clear if he can outplay McPhoxez. If we are looking for a third baseman from San Diego, I’d suggest Chase Headley. Also, I wouldn’t mind Callaspo talks being revived.
You just used unadjusted career OBP for a player who plays in Petco Park.

where is Chavez?
I have this need for him to come out and make his annual “I will play 150 games at third” speech, if only to make me feel the annual false sense of security.
I really didn’t want Beltre anyway, despite the defensive prowess I feel his stick was always HGH-embellished and thus he’ll never approach his steroid-era numbers, even in Fenway now, and will prove too expensive. And I do not want Tejada back to play third, maybe SS if I smoke enough crack to suspend my disbelief that his MVP performances weren’t just as juice-inflated as Beltre’s pre-‘05 career… but not third, Christ I don’t wanna see Cahill weep openly as yet another inning-ending DP goes through the sticky wickets.
Those sticky Dominican Miggy Caminiti wickets, gosh I can’t believe how alliterative one can be at 5 am, without even the aid of dangerous drugs. Speaking of dangerous drugs, does anyone else worry all the time that in 10 years many or all the ’roid revolution players will tragically die from the long-term effects of what they put in their bodies and the as-yet-unknown impact a lot of the “designer” substances might someday have? I admit I worry that lots of these guys will pass before 50, dunno how healthy that is to worry like that but it just seems like a tragedy waiting to come to an awful fruition somewhere down the line, ugh. I hope it never happens but if it does you can be sure of one thing: that Bud Selig will make sure they build a statue of him for presiding over it all.
Anyway, third base third base third base, WTF OMG LOL BBQ. I just don’t know, where the heck is Chavy with the annual January “I am so healthy right now I could play third for a whole week of doubleheaders and then fight on American Gladiators on the morning of the 8th day” speech? Or is it really this beastly awful shambles where he plays until his limbs fall off (translation: 3.2 innings of the first game) and then it’s McPhoxy Lady, a sweet little heartbreaker if you are our young pitchers trying to get out of a jam that doesn’t involve burning your guitar at the end, yikes.
Or is it Inge? Lowell? Lopez? Kouzma Kevinoff? Brooks Robinson? I admit that if I were the A’s I’d think about yellow police tape around third base, it could get to be quite a crime scene over there if this goes on, grrr..
Hey, I just bought the team from Lew Wolff... who wants to play third?
this is from December 15, 2009
