John Sickels' Top 20 Pre-Season Prospect Review
Not a whole lot of in-depth analysis, but has some interesting things to say about a few guys. One thing that really stands out to me is how under the radar Arnold Leon really is. Sickels had him as the A's #24 prospect entering the season. What the guy has done as a starter at AA this year, as a 20 year old is very impressive. You better believe that guy has opened some eyes this year.

Mazzaro
Ranking him as a innings eater to me is wrong. The problem with him this year is he doesn’t concentrate during the game and gets sloppy. He has the pitches but needs to put them together and he can be a strong 3# starter. To many times he gets the first 2 hitters out then nibbkles. If he can’t work out the mental part of being a starter I do see him as a outstanding set up man with the movement on his fastball.
The problem I have with this is...
How do you know he doesn’t concentrate? It seems like wild speculation. Maybe he’s entirely focused but he just doesn’t have enough control to be more than an innings eater.
If you think Billy Beane is a bad GM, I hate you and find you stupid.
Mazzaro has always been an innings eater-type
- or 4.

No innings eater
He gives up to many base runners to be a effective innings eater pitcher. He has great movement on his fast ball but struggles with to many 2-3 counts. He needs to trust his pitches more somenthing a older pitcher learns.
Mazzaro reminds me of Zito
for some reason. perhaps its the O that ends their names, or maybe its their really high WHIPs.
Damn this system is deep.
No Capra and Desme didn’t even make that list. Both of those guys have a lot of promise; I especially like Capra. Also Landon Powell didn’t make it either. I have hope for the future.

That's because Desme and Capra didn't break out until this year.
That list is a review of last year’s top prospects.
I’m sure this winter both Capra and Desme will be on the list.
Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

Ya,
I was just saying this system is even deeper than that list. I’m surprised Petey Paramore made that list as well.

Why he is a premium defensive catcher
with good plate discipline and a good collegiate record. That is certainly enough to warrant a C+. If he can hit for any power or average he will be a valuable commodity.
There are differing opinions on me. According to Iglew "DFA is PT with a sense of humor. PT is DFA with introspective self-doubt. I like them both" but according to sirbed Im "The Stats Killer"

Desme was pro ball's 1st 30-30 guy this year
Insane right? Before anyone in the bigs.
Lets hope he comes from nowhere and commands a starting job out of ST.
In a perfect world, Carter, Desme & Wallace all hit 30 HR a year with Oakland.
Leon, should not have been on this list, because it was written before
the season. It was his top 20, before the season started.
Because the A's had so many prospects before the 2009 season
Sickels extended the list to 24 and Leon was indeed on it.
Random prospect question:
Can someone summarize for me what we know about Aaron Cunningham’s defense?
I see that he’s made five errors in ~50 games of big league action at the OF corners, which is quite a few. He’s also yet to play an inning of CF in Oakland. But that doesn’t tell me nearly enough.
Does he project as a center fielder? Is he a plus defender on a corner? What’s his arm like? He’s obviously fairly fast given his sb totals, but does he take good routes?
Thank you for your help.

corner outfielder
Right now looks like a average outfielder with only slight power.
Never really was that high on Cunningham
I think at this point it’s safe to say his upside Scott Hairston.

Hasn't Cunningham come close to 20 homers the past couple seasons?
.300 guy. Some discipline problems, but nothing too excessive.
I don’t see why he can’t be a good starting corner or CF’er.

It's retrospective, not new.
It’s Sickels’ list from before the season started, reviewed. He’ll do another top 20 at the beginning of next year (and Anderson and Cahill won’t be on it).
