because he’s a unique, interesting player.

I dislike Ichiro because I view him as a bit selfish; he purposefully swings at balls out of the zone (even foregoing walks) to try and get more hits. Oh, and he’s a Mariner.

Pablo Sandoval swings at a lot of balls out of the zone to try and get more hits too

I like him and I like Ichiro.

Sometimes I like people who are aggressive like that, whether it’s selfishness or not. The key is Ichiro’s good enough to get those hits anyway.

I don't think you can hold the swinging out of the zone against him.

That’s the same as complaining that Cust watches too many pitches. A hitter has to stay true to his style. If Ichiro were to concentrate on walking more, it would mess him up and he wouldn’t be as good.

by iglew on Sep 6, 2009 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand that

but the hit he got yesterday was a 3-2 pitch that was way, way out of the zone. Ichiro should know better than that.

Besides

I don’t think Jack Cust chooses to strike out… Ichiro chooses not to take walks.

by VORP is too nerdy on Sep 6, 2009 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

No, Cust doesn't choose to strike out,

but he chooses to pursue a hitting style that entails watching a lot of pitches, some of which turn out to be called strikes. When he attempts to change his style to compensate for that, it messes up his stroke and his overall numbers go down. I think the same would happen to Ichiro if he were to try to take more bad pitches. Going to the plate with an intention to hit almost any pitch is what works for Ichiro.

The problem I have with the "Ichiro doesn't walk" criticism is that it's usually done in a way that suggests...

…it hurts the Mariners. I don’t really agree with that. It hurts them relative to what? If you look at it in terms of OBP, he and Cust are almost the same but Cust gets a higher percentage of his due to walks while Ichiro does it with hits. Ichiro’s career .378 OBP may not be spectacular in the sense of what some people would want out of a leadoff hitter but it’s still 24th among all active players. That’s pretty respectable.
