Athletics Claim Jon Meloan
By Tim Dierkes [September 2, 2009 at 3:01pm CST]
The Athletics claimed 25 year-old righty Jon Meloan off waivers from the Pirates, according to CSN Bay Area (via Twitter). The A's are Meloan's fourth club this year, after he bounced around from the Indians to the Rays to the Pirates. And last year he went from the Dodgers to the Tribe in the Casey Blake deal. At three different Triple A stops this year he compiled a 4.57 ERA with 60 strikeouts and 28 walks in 65 innings. Meloan was considered a "potential power set-up man" for the Dodgers by Baseball America a few years ago.

Does Rajai Davis know Al Davis?

I don't know why
But I think this will be a very nice pickup for the A’s.
"I feel like we are sending Danny Haren for Mulder all over again." - Cardinal fan on the Matt Holliday trade
"But at this time of year, two plus two doesn't always add up to eight. Sometimes, it equals four." - Geoff Baker, Mariners beat writer.
Because he was a pretty solid prospect like 2 years ago.
Not a bad pickup.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
This.
Hes got to be better than Kevin Cameron or some of the other filler on the roster
Chris Carter entered a villiage where an ogre had devoured all the crops and livestock, and Chris Carter asked the people of the village, "Have you no beasts of labor with which to pay tribute me?" And the people answered, "No, the ogre has taken our livestock," and with one mighty swing of his bat Chris Carter felled the ogre, and Chris Carter did proclaim, "Let my people be free," and it was so. - Aufheben

I liked all the waiver pick ups we did this year with the exception of the SF one, (what was his name?).
All the pitchers I have liked, (Breslow being the best). Let’s look at the list of pitchers we collected this year.
Dan Giese The only one that did not work out IMO.
Kevin Cameron I liked what I saw of him before he got hurt, (proving he’s a true A) and I could see him as a replacement to Gasoline, (Casilla) in 2010.
Craig Breslow The best pick up by a mile he has saved our bull pen almost single handed, (he should wear a cape when he warms up).
Brett Tomko He has to be the biggest surprise, (I know small sample size). What he is doing to save the arms of ACM can not be overlooked.
So I will side with BB when he picks up a pitching prospect that did not work out with another team.

"the SF one" = Jerome Williams?
He was with SF way back when but had bounced around since then.
Neither Williams nor Cameron were waiver pickups. I believe both were signed as minor league free agents.

He might be thinking of Ben Copeland
Which was Rule V, but still.

He's not a waiver pickup
but Andrew Brown does have a handshake agreement to return to the A’s organization once he gets healthy again.
these are exactly the kind of guys I get excited about
It’s good to have an open, flexible 40th roster slot just for guys like this. Balfour (Rays reliever) and Cruz (Rangers OF) both slid through all of MLB in the waiver process in spring of ’08, and look at the seasons they had.
Great way to take a flier on guys with upside, especially RPs.
Batting 4th for the 2014 San Jose A's: 26-year-old RF Justin Upton, in the 1st season of a nine year, $250M deal.
There are always a few of those guys
Who bounce around, then hit it big, and people are always supprised that their team didnt pick em up (or let em go in the first place). But for every one of them, there are dozens of ones that dont work out. Its just the luck of the draw. I dont blame the A’s for Pena or Cruz, especially because each player had a stop or several between success and the A’s.

Can you Meloan $5?

Yesterday
I looked at the pitcher…and then at the centerfielder…

I would have gone with "Our offense should be recalled?"

A dead muskrat, maybe?
Hard to tell without better resolution.
at least
worth a look. Zero cost with potential.
meloan
he looked like one of the better upper level reliever prospects just a yr or so ago…they converted him to a starter with so so results. Before broxton became a full time closer i recall Meloan as being a potential future option before he got traded. No risk pickup and he has minor league options remaining, likely to remain in AAA and help with their playoffs
He was a Sickles top 50 pitching prospect in 08
- overall from May 08, surprisingly ranked ahead of pitchers like
cahill, masterson, gallagher, H. Rodrgiuez, Bowden, etc
well we saw what happened with Gallagher, and H Rod is an enigma
