Springer Claimed by Rays, Braden to the DL?

According to the tweet from oakclubhouse at least....

More from scout.com:

OaklandClubhouse.com has learned from a source that reliever Russ Springer has been traded by the Oakland A's. It isn't clear for who or to what team as of yet. Oakland is also placing left-handed starter Dallas Braden on the DL and recalling outfielder Aaron Cunningham and starter Clayton Mortensen. Mortensen will start tonight. The A's are also purchasing the contract of left-handed reliever Jay Marshall. We haven't confirmed what the third move will be on the A's roster yet.

 Slusser reports:

Assistant GM David Forst said it's a straight waiver claim.

"We felt like it was a good opportunity to see some guys in Triple-A the last month of the season, and it gives Russ the chance to pitch in a pennant race," Forst said. "That's something he deserves at this point in his career. He's done a great job for us and he's been a great mentor for our youngsters."

Also:

There is still the potential that the team will place Dallas Braden on the DL tomorrrow if the infected rash on his left foot has not improved substantially.

Why Marshall over Kilby?

Kilby deserves a chance. Marshall already had his.

Marshall's chance was a couple years ago, he also deserves to get another.

The fun part of all of this is that there is an abundance of players we would all like to see get a chance.

The A’s have great depth at relief in the minors and also outfield so some will just have to wait until Sept.

Like Syphon said below, The A’s are more fun to watch now that they have gone younger. Davis is playing like a man possessed and yes, he could actually be this good now that he is playing everyday and isn’t afraid of not performing. I like what i have seen from Pennington also. A lot of his outs were good hits. Also he is hitting a bunch of doubles.

Marshall goes up because he could give the front office more trading chips

If Marshall can do a suitable Breslow impression, we could do some LOOGY trading in the offseason.

Kilby - not surprised despite his numbers

Kilby has consistently put up the kind of numbers that if he was an early pick everyone would calling him our next best thing.

But frankly, anyone who has watched over the years, shouldn’t be surprised by this move. It’s been the way it’s been for years. Not sure the chance will ever come for Kilby in Oakland.

I hope he can pitch better this time

couldn’t buy an out against a RH batter when he was last here

What are his stats in AAA against RHB’s, does anyone know?

My favorite team is a f***ing embarrassment to all true A's fans and they make me sick to my stomach on an almost daily f***ing basis. But being a true fan, I will ride this pathetic bunch of losers out and hope that they get better in 2010

Not so good:

Against lefties: 25.0 IP, 15 hits, 2 BB, 19 K.

Yep

He won’t last long up here.

I have too many not so fond memories last time.

AS long as Geren never allows him to pitch to a RHB, he might be alright.

win or lose, this team has been 10 times more fun to watc since we shipped holiday off

If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.

I know there are a bunch of Holliday bashers

But the 2 HR (including a grandslam) is still pretty amazing. He got hot just about the same time as the rest of the team got hot too.

From MLB Rumors it says that Robinson Cano, Brian Bruney, Mark Melancon and David Robertson have all cleared waivers for the Yankees.

Love Nomar, and really would hope he can get on with the Red Sox this year.

Not sure if they have the space for him on the roster but it would be a classy way to end his career. Of course, after saying that, he will get traded and hit like Holliday has with the Cards.

by Eastbayjim on Aug 8, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Crosby

I read he was placed on waivers again this year and passed right through. Same thing happened to Giambi. With Springer I am guessing that the twins and cards that wanted him before the deadline wanted the A’s to pick up salary. Hopefully this was money saved to sign draft picks.

by Arcman on Aug 8, 2009 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not an expert on the waiver process

But I am assuming that as the defending AL champions the Rays were pretty low on the waiver priority and that the Cards and Twins could have made a claim on Springer before the Rays had a chance to if they had wanted them.

Maybe someone who knows the process better can clarify.

by OkayJay81 on Aug 8, 2009 11:45 PM PDT up reply actions

All AL teams claim before all NL teams

(because we’re an AL team; other way around if waiver from NL).

So Rays get a shot at him before Cards.

I believe the Twins would have had priority over the Rays though.

Almost everybody is put on waivers this time of year, just in case

since the waivers are revokeable there is no risk and if a player clears they can be traded so its always good to have the flexibility.

Is Springer retiring after this year?

According to the most recent version of MLBTradeRumors.com’s reverse-engineered Elias rankings, Springer was a borderline Type B free agent.

If Springer doesn’t retire and signs a major league contract next year, the A’s just gave away a sandwich pick for nothing but some salary relief. If he retires, though, no big deal.

by kenarneson on Aug 8, 2009 1:30 PM PDT reply actions

You don't need to

Type B’s don’t require you to offer arbitration anymore to get the draft pick. Only Type A’s do.

by kenarneson on Aug 8, 2009 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, you do have to offer arb to Type Bs.

the A’s didn’t get a supplemental round draft pick for Embree last year because they didn’t offer arb, and he was Type B.

by Blicks on Aug 8, 2009 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

You're right.

Looked it up. Forget what I said. Something changed about Type B’s in the latest CBA, but I’m remembering wrong.

by kenarneson on Aug 8, 2009 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

What changed in the last CBA with Type Bs was

that the team signing the FA wouldn’t have to give up their draft pick anymore; the team losing the player would be getting a supplemental round pick instead.

unless there was no offers for springer, and I'm pretty sure the cards offered something

it seems like this was a bad move. something has to be better than nothing.

the only positive I can possibly see is if teams know BB will not cave, he has more leverage in future trade negotiations. Out of spite he gave Springer away rather than accept crap.

Who saw the blurb on Aaron Cunningham?

The 23-year-old has shown some real pop with Triple-A Sacramento this season, batting .300 with nine homers and 42 RBI. Although he had a .152 batting average in 16 games with the Athletics earlier this season, he could see an increased role with Matt Holliday gone and Eric Patterson struggling.

I guess they forgot that Eric Patterson was sent back to Triple-A Sacramento a few days ago.

Springer for anyone?

At the July 31st deadline I thought I read at least one team, IIRC a few, were interested in Springer. Whether that was true, a firm offer made, players or what….I assume nothing was offered. But hearing this so soon after the deadline was surprising, to get nothing for him when it sounded like we could of gotten anything for him. The Cards could of tossed in a minor prospect in with the Holliday deal for him, no? Or cash even.
