A's Recall Gray; Demote Reineke

Official Press Release

Gray joins the A's for the fourth time this year and has appeared in one game in each of his first three stints.

Giambi still not activated; A's carrying 13 pitchers, leaving the bench short.

Star-divide

Gray's had a nice season in Sacramento:

Gray is 2-2 with 16 saves and a 1.54 ERA in 37 relief appearances.  He had just one blown save for a save percentage of 94.1% and his 16 saves are tied for the most in the A's organization and were sixth most in the Pacific Coast League. Gray allowed a .200 opponents batting average, which included a .189 (18 for 95) mark against right-handed hitters and .218 (12 for 55) against left-handers.

It's time to give him a long look - he's got to be a better option than Casilla at this point.

The beginning of the Everyday Rajai era

Sweeney in left and Cust in right just feels wrong.

Is it more wrong than seeing Garciaparra hit fourth?

Not sure what purpose Nomar serves on this team...

veteran presence?

Not if he can't take the field, no.

His bat isn’t good enough to warrant him being the DH.

Sure would like to see Powell in the line-up more

to see what he does as more of an everyday player. Catch once a week and 1B/DH the rest.

This probably makes less sense since Everidge was called up and doing decent.

Totally agree with you on Landon

and he could very easily get more time in the lineup. If Cust is in the field due to a rest day for Hairston, Sweeney, or Rajai, then the DH should pretty much be either Suzuki or Powell.

He can easily get more starts in the lineup, spelling Suzuki at C, Everidge at 1B, and Cust at DH on various days.

Another day without Giambi on the roster is a good one.

I don’t mind the A’s carrying 13 pitchers. The #1 priority of this team is making sure MAC and Bailey don’t blow out their arms. Especially in the AL where you don’t pinch hit as often(And, an NL team or two was carrying 13 pitchers on roster earlier this season).

Although, because I have to wildly speculate, could this mean Springer is on the outs via a waiver deal… possibly during the road trip…and 11 pitchers for the A’s is a bad idea.

i'm surprised they didn't keep Reineke...

just in-case Braden can’t go his next start. I think they’re are carrying 13 because the ’pen’s been over-worked and if they activate a position player and it’s not Giambi – the s#%* will hit the fan

They can recall Reineke if necessary

by DLing Braden if he can’t make his next start. The DL negates the 10 day waiting period, and the retroactive timing at that point would make sense.
