8/5 Minor Athletics
Chris Carter continued his tear today and James Simmons showed flashes of brilliance. The A's are an exciting team to watch. It's a good day to be an A's fan!

There you go. Let's hope both Carter and Desme continue their respective thrashing of all pitchers each face. Do you still have faith in James Simmons, or is he too inconsistent?

Man, Chris Carter just keeps it going.
Pick it up soon, Cardenas.
Also, the RockHounds are actually 58-51, the Ports are 48-62 and the Cougars are 60-49.

Sorry about the confusion
I went with the second half records.
Yeah, that’s happened to me before. I don’t know it automatically loads that.

Cardenas
Starting to piss me off in AAA.
Desme is god.
"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com
I don't think AAA is the problem.
He was already in a slump when they moved him up. But man, I sure wish he’d pick it up.
Think of it this way
Cardenas is going to have to learn how to get himself out of slumps, because every hitter goes through them at the major-league level. It’s better for him to figure out how to deal with it for the first time (I’m guessing) as a 21-year-old in the minors, than as a 22 or 23-year old on the A’s.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
agreed
if they were to try him at a position outside of second, why not let it be SS. then he doesnt have to hit as well and we do need a SS
maybe because he has virutally no chance of being a decent defensive SS
and has a very good chance to be a good defensive 3B?
I think that might be right.
His struggles definitely started at the same time. As he gets more used to 3rd, he should come out of it, I hope. (I still think of him as the 3B of the future.)
So, in 2011-2015
1B: Wallace
2B: Weeks
SS: Green/Ladendorf/Coleman
3B: Cardenas
DH: Carter
?
I think I’d go…
1B: Carter
2B: Cardenas
SS: Green/Ladendorf/Coleman
3B: Wallace
CF: Weeks
1B: Carter
I think Wallace has 1, maybe 2 years when he can be passable at 3rd.
My understanding (per Dan Szymborski of ZIPS) is that D does not peak—it just gets worse and worse your whole career. I just don’t see Wal;ace as a long term answer at 3rd. Ideally, Wallace can be -10ish at 3rd for a couple years, and Cardenas is comfortable enough at both 2nd and 3rd to play wherever he is needed. If Wallace can play 3rd for a long time, that’s great, especially because it lets Weeks move to CF. I just don’t think it’s gonna happen.
Carter’s a DH anyway, I think. One of Doolittle/Barton/Wallace is our long-term 1B.
Carter and Desme continue to make me very very very happy. Weeks has also been entertaining to follow. Amazing game by Simmons, I hope he turns it around.
Cardenas… Come on dude, turn it around. I feel bad for him, it seems that he’s having trouble turning it on in AAA. =(

It's hard to determine how to manage Desme from now on.
On one hand he’s still striking out a ton, still got big holes in his swing + pitch recognition, and promoting guys with those types of issues quickly isn’t necessarily a good idea. On the other hand, he’s already 23 and his line of .293/.378/.680 is absolutely ridiculous. Personally, I would say to hell with it, and give him a shot at Midland for this last month of the season.
Man, imagine what he’d be like if he didn’t miss 1.5 years of development time with that wrist injury…
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
The .680 SLG makes me laugh.
It’s insane how hard he’s hitting the ball. It’s not just Stockton either, he was doing it in Kane County, which is a feat in itself. If he keeps it up, and finishes the season hot in AA, he might have a shot. I hope he succeeds. It would mean a lot of good things for the A’s

Someone (I think NateHST) came up with a Chris Young ceiling for Desme, which I think is pretty accurate.
Desme might be one of those rare players who either hits his ceiling (because he managed to figure everything out) or completely flames out, with nothing in between.

That's an interesting comp
Problem is, Chris Young got all of his holes exploited in the bigs. Maybe Desme can figure it out, but he needs to get rid of some of the holes in his swing.

1.5 years.....Desme had a OPS of 1227 his last year in college, then bacame our 2nd rd pick in 2007. had 50 AB inbetween then and this year. Then this breakout season, his first season
109 games. 400 AB, .281 avg, 84 R, 27 D, 25 HR, 40w, 129 K, 35sb/3cs, OPS 911 between A and A+
since moving up 40 games ago, has improved his: AVG 20 points, HR %, walk rate, and his OPS 233 points, but his strikeouts % has stayed the same. Not sure exactly what pitches he is not handling but he has the pedigree.
As for Simmons he was put right into AA after signing, and in his 2nd full year he’s pitching AAA ball. They rushed him because he was a first round pick and I’m sure he still has alot to learn. That’s not to say he didn’t do well in AA last year but when you jump to AAA your also pitching against 3-4 guys that are AAAA , They pick him in the 10th round and he could just be getting to AA ball now and everyone on his nuts.

No need for another Desme promotion this year.
The guy already has hit well at two levels. Let him stay where he is and keep making the adjustments he needs to, to lower the K’s and close the holes.
If he start’s next year in AA, he can move to AAA mid season and be in Oakland at 24, no need to needlessly rush the guy.
Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

agree--leave him be
unless you want him to play in the Midland playoffs to get experience (‘cause Stockton probably won’t be involved)
The age-relative-to-league thing can get overblown at times. If Desme is ready to be a starter at age 26, that’s fine for Oakland.
Yay Brett Tomko!!!!
Wooohoooo we have officially filled any pitching voids.

Shit?
The guy’s ERA for the past three years is somewhere in the 5.75 range. He’s the man!

Oh I absolutely hope he'll be added to the rotation, to ease the arms of our rookies.
But he’ll still be shit.

To be honest
If the kiddies targeted IPs are just about up (which is soon), I’d fill the rotation will Tomkos and Russ Ortiz’s and Brandon Backes etc etc.

Yup, exactly.
don’t forget our good friend Dana Eveland. But really, we gotta be careful. These are 21 year old rookies here. If anything happens to Anderson’s arm…oh man I don’t even wanna think about it.
"True fact: In a global thermonuclear war, the only human who would survive would be David Eckstein" -PT
Totally agree.
Although I’d rather Reineke and Eveland over Tomko though, but the point stands.
Sending Cahill back down to AAA for the rest of the season to work on not walking people would be a good idea.

that’s exactly when you’ll be calling him shit
Randy Winn is in time out until his OBP gets back over .330.
They might be saving Cahill/Anderson/Mazzaros arms.
Doesn’t mean I have to like how the results are going to turn out. I enjoy seeing Andersons 7-9IP -7+k – 0ER lines.
Tomko will be like 4IP – 2K – over9000 ER

I've said this before about Cardenas, and I will say it again
He is the type of player, as we saw with Gio, who absolutly sucks balls the first time he is at a level. The next year, he will return, and he will kick ass there.
So I fully expect to see him in AAA next year, put up great numbers, eventually get called up to Oakland, suck balls till the rest of the year, then do well in 2011.
Don't believe in yourself.

sucking balls and kicking ass.

Working at Raley Field
I am a huge fan of this organization, HUGE. so when the chance to work at Raley field I obviously jumped all over the oppertunity. I show up early to the field every day, and get to watch RC batting practice… totally behind the scenes, the future is bright for these guys. I was at the game tonight as a fan though….. Simmons was WOW. loved watching that game…

Don't forget Weeks
He jumped a level and doing well. Still a year and a half away but much promise.
Is he a year and a half away, though?
The only reason he started this year in Stockton was the injury last year. He’s not a raw talent like a Rashun Dixon. The word everyone used is “polished”, and it’s true. He’s a college hitter and he’s pretty advanced for being in the minors for just about a year. I could definitely see him up sometime next year.
Anyone? Simmon's K 11 - 1st round pick - Lets get excited
but sad about his ERA.
Would like to see him up in september for a few starts
Not a bad idea
It gets Simmons some experience in meaningless games and also limits the innings of the other young guys. Of course this is rushing Simmons a bit so it might just be better to leave him in Sacramento and get a few playoff starts.
"Their batters are patient to the point that it's annoying." -Ryan Franklin
is simmons on the 40 man? no, right?
he’s not coming up.
Michael Spina
Hit his fifth homerun for Kane County. He’s is batting .276 with 18 RBIs in 24 games with Kane County. Anyway he gets another promotion before the season or does he start in Stockton next year?
Carter
Remains my favorite position player prospect since Nick Swisher.

Desme
Walked, and then built on that progress by promptly striking out.

I suppose one could do worse.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
no sh!t.
that would be a dream scenario. but he’ll have to strike out a lot less (relative to league) to even be Jack Cust. (i know you’re mostly joking, i just got really excited)
Kala Ka'aihue hit a grand slam for Stockton today
I’m not sure how he ended up in our system but he might be an interesting bat. Not nearly the prospect that Kila is for the Royals, Kala has struggled with the adjustment to AA and seems to have stalled out in the Braves system. He is a big right-handed 1B/DH who draws a lot of walks, K’s a bunch and had shown good power in the lower minors but it hasn’t really been there for him in 2 seasons in AA.
He’s 24 and has been brutally bad so far this year in AA, I’m not expecting too much from him but if he can flash the power he showed all those years ago he might have a chance to be useful.
