8/4 Minor Athletics

I'm back from Vegas with 16 extra bucks in my pocket due to an excellent three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Thanks to Raj for keeping all of us informed on the minor leagues. I'm infatuated with his formatting, so hopefully we will keep it pretty similar. Here are the results from Tuesday.

The formatting is a work in progress...

After his start, Ronny Moria is looking more and more interesting as a rising prospect. These next few weeks will be very interesting for our hitters and the adjustments they make to higher levels of pitching.

I’m on my phone right now, so I can’t really see the formatting in full effect. It looks like you did a great job, though. I fooled around with it quite a few times.

Also, I see that they gave Adrian Cardenas the day off. He is hitting just .155 at Triple-A and I believe he’s just 0-for-11 since being called back up.

Cardenas should be left in AAA until the end of the season.

They say if you can play in AA you can play in the majors so his struggles in AAA are a little puzzling to say the least.

Oh, Henry

I want to add a thought or two to my report from Portland that I posted 2 days ago.

I watched Henry Rodriguez pitch twice against the Portland Beavers over the weekend. I was pretty hard on him last year, commenting that Henry did not seem to be improving during 2008, perhaps not working hard enough at improving his control, perhaps too consumed with his velocity.

After this weekend, there is no question that Henry possibly throws a baseball harder than anyone on the planet. He hit 100mph and 101mph on what appeared to be an accurate radar gun. And too many of his heaters did not just barely miss; they were just wild.

BUT, I saw glimmers of hope. On Sunday, Henry walked two batters and looked in trouble. A visit from the pitching coach caused a change. With Portland’s slugger at the plate, Henry struck him out with two straight 90mph changeups. Think about that. Rodriguez threw two 90mph pitches and the batter was wayyyyyy out in front of them.

What does that mean? It appears that Henry’s reputation for 100mph fastballs precedes him. The hitters are so wound up, wanting to get around on that fastball, that they pull the hair-trigger too fast on the 90mph changeup.

Henry listened that day to his coach and got the crucial K with the THREAT of his fastball, not the fastball itself. I now think that if Henry continues to listen and do a little more pitching, and a little less heaving, he might actually get pretty good.

With all that said, Henry came out Monday and struck out two very agressive swingers on something like 7 straight 99-101mph 4-seam fastballs.

Like I said before, I think he will be in the bigs for someone next year. Maybe for us, maybe as HUGE trade bait.

A sept call up?

He would be a good call up to just face 1 or 2 batters. Might as well get him used to major league hitters.

Thanks for the detailed report

I remember a couple spring trainings ago, Peter Gammons was hyping up Henry Rodriguez as a rising star, just like a younger Bobby Crosby was going to be prospective MVP.

Still, you have to be impressed with a SO/9 of ~15 and equally frightened by his BB/9 of 7.5. Like dingers, we all love 100 mph fastballs.

MIdland's ballpark

I’ve been trying to figure out the actual dimensions of the ballpark in Midland, to see whether the park is a factor in Carter’s amazing power numbers. Here’s a picture of the park (Full size version available here)

The wall in LF and left-center does look pretty high, maybe 12 feet or so? This description says, “The serpentine outfield wall, that juts and curves at odd angles, is another contrast to many other contemporary symmetrical ballparks.” It also mentions that the park faces SE so the fans don’t have to stare into the sun; but that alignment exposes the field to a good deal of wind that blows in from the south, limiting HRs.

MIdland's ballpark

I’ve been trying to figure out the real dimensions of Midland’s OF to see how much of a factor it’s been in Carter’s amazing power numbers. Here’s a picture of the park:

It looks to me like the LF to LC wall is pretty high, maybe 12 feet or so.

This brief description, along with more photos, is here:

Uniquely, the footprint of the stadium faces southeast to shield the fans from the sun. However the prevailing winds blow in from the south, which limits the number of home runs. The serpentine outfield wall, that juts and curves at odd angles, is another contrast to many other contemporary symmetrical ballparks.

You can look at the dimensions on

gameday. It appears to depress HRs bit relative to the Texas league. I’ve heard that the wind is tougher on left handed hitters, but I don’t know if that is true. Carter’s power numbers are a bit worse than the past two years, so there is no reason to think the park is helping him much if at all with that.

With stout hearts, and with enthusiasm for the contest, let us go forward to victory. ----Hero Defector Montgomery

I don't know where else to ask this, so I'll ask it here.

One of my favourite features on this blog is the Monday Minors write-up. Grover does a great job, but seen as though he’s been AWOL for about the last month, could the powers select a deputy replacement to do a weekly thing on the front page?

Also, any updates on the latest injury to DLS?

DLS felt sore after his last start in Arizona

Nothing serious, just soreness, but he’s gonna be done for the rest of the year and do some throwing this offseason.

So to re-cap

They traded Swisher for a 4th outfielder, a 3rd/4th starter, and player soon to be 24 who has never pitched past double AA despite having the potential to be a solid #2? When a deal like that comes along, you gotta do it.

So to re-cap

No one has a crystal ball WRT prospects. Or even WRT major-leaguers, as Kenny Williams found out last year with Swisher.

you know what... thats still a good trade

Swisher was signed to a cheap deal yes but Sweeney/Gio will give you 12 years of way cheaper production that will probably outstrip Swisher’s and DLS has #1 starter potential even if he is a little old. ARL is much less of a big deal when you have a pitcher rather than a hitter with stuff that you know has excellent stuff (assuming it comes back from his injury).

Dating girls is like starting pitching depth, you think you have a good full rotation, even too many starters, then in an instant as soon as you trade your depth away injuries decimate your rotation and you are forced to start Sidney Ponson.

What has Swish done since leaving Oakland?

And they’re supposed to foresee injuries?

Talk about being fucking insane.

While I've never seen DLS throw, the motion of a pitcher often can lead to future elbow problems.

For example: Liriano, Francisco.

As for Swisher, his wOBA of .367 is still pretty good, and he’s roughly 1.5 wins above replacement.

by Pucking Insane on Aug 5, 2009 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Right but even if he is a 3 WAR player it is highly likely that Sweeney/Gio will out WAR that.

Slusser is reporting that Grant Green toured the Coliseum....

This link if you want to read it. Sounds pretty good.

If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

Hmm, not sure touring the Coliseum is conducive to him signing here.

Considering what happened the last time a SS toured the Coliseum….
