100 Most Often Mispelled Misspelled Words in English

Of the new songs "leaked" so far I think this is my favorite. Parody of The White Stripes.

Isn't that Andre Ethier??
Look, if you are afraid of being stalked by a mountain lion, forget the sound effects. They invariably attack from behind. So do what is effective in India, against Bengal Tiger attacks: they wear a mask on the back of their heads, so when the lion approaches from behind, it looks as if you are looking right at the beast. No one wearing such a mask, has -ever- been attacked. There was one report, where a guy said he was attacked. He finally admitted that he took off his mask, set it down, and that is when he was attacked.

Eight of the 104 players that tested positive six years ago received such results because of dietary supplements, not hard-core steroids.
Major League Baseball maintains that 96 players tested positive because of performance-enhancing drugs, but only the government is believed to know who tested positive for what substance.

Mora publicly criticized his manager for benching him for the third time in four games on Sunday.

Beltran shagged fly balls on Monday for the first time since going on the disabled list with a bruised right knee.
“I think it’s progress because I didn’t feel it all the time,” Beltran said of pain in the knee “and I ran in the pool today, like six miles per hour, and I didn’t feel anything. It’s getting better little by little.”
Wagner worked a perfect inning in his second minor league rehab appearance.

Speaking of drinking being funny when it isn't an addiction
My favorite Tim McGraw album is “A Place in the Sun” and it has two cool drinking songs; “She’ll Have You Back (Back to drinkin’ in no time)” and “Señorita Margarita”. But in the song “My Next Thirty Years”, he does say " . . . have a few more lemonades and not so many beers. Maybe I’ll remember my next thirty years?"
That album has a lot of good country “love” songs too. Tim McGraw is the only country artist that I own on CD. Besides him I don’t like Country music that much.

Spelling list
I’m sure they mean well with the mnemonic hint for each one, but I didn’t get very far on the list before I saw a problem.
For the second word on the list, accidentally, they say:
It is no accident that the test for adverbs on -ly is whether they come from an adjective on -al (“accidental” in this case). If so, the -al has to be in the spelling. No publical, then publicly.
Well, that’s fine for accidentally, but that little throwaway line about publicly is going to lead you astray on soooo many words.
No specifical, then specificly = FAIL
No basical, then basicly = FAIL
No romantical, then romanticly = FAIL
No dynamical, then dynamicly = FAIL
No emphatical, then emphaticly = FAIL
No ironical, then ironicly = FAIL
No idiotical, then idioticly = FAIL
And on and on with so many words I can’t even count them. In fact, publicly is the exception. Virtually every other -ic word adds -ally, not just -ly.
It is true that an adjective that ends with -al will result in an adverb ending in -ally. It is not true that an adjective that doesn’t end in -al will not result in an adverb ending in -ally.

Dodgers manager Joe Torre claims that Manny Ramirez’s hand isn’t an issue for the slugger.
Ramirez was hit on the hand with a fastball during a game on July 21. X-rays came back negative that night, but he has been mired in a slump ever since clubbing a grand slam the next night.
Ramirez is 7-for-42 (.167) with three extra-base hits and no RBIs since July 22.

More spelling list
I continue to be unimpressed.
For supersede:
This word supersedes all others in perversity. As if we don’t have enough to worry about, keeping words on -ceed and -cede (“succeed,” “precede,” etc.) straight in our minds, this one has to be different from all the rest. The good news is: this is the only English word based on this stem spelled -sede.
Huh? what about sedentary?
I can’t say I care for gist of this comment. It just encourages the false notion that supersede is related to concede, etc, but it’s some sort of irrational oddball exception. It’s not. It makes perfect sense. Sedere means to sit. Something supersedes if it sits above, like a higher court.
And then there’s this:
“judgement” is the correct spelling of this word, no matter what anyone says.
Whoa! Where the heck did that come from?? Of course judgment is correct, just as any dictionary would say, including Webster’s New World, which is the featured dictionary on that very website! But the author of this list is going to declare an established spelling incorrect just because he doesn’t like it??
For what it’s worth, although it’s not my favorite, the New World is a respectable dictionary, and for that reason I happily endorse yourdictionary.com. I mention this only to contrast it with dictionary.com which is based on a terrible dictionary (Random House). Dictionary.com is a Microsoft-led effort to capture all online dictionary traffic and send it to that awful awful dictionary. It should be resisted.
In case you missed my other rant a few weeks ago, Iglew’s advice is: Never use dictionary.com. It is evil, and it will make you stupid.

I’ve got a regular M-W on my desk right at the computer. For me it’s more natural to open the book than go to a website.

i work in publishing
and at the houses i work with, we use m-w.com as a standard. i personally like yourdictionary because of their vast links to foreign-language dictionaries. and if anybody wants to throw around some online subscriptions, please get me one for the online chigago manual of style.
anyway… is there something ironic about a the title “100 most often misspelled words” or does hyphenation not count as spelling? which i’m fine with. maybe hyphenation is punctuation that borders on diction… but still.
(don’t talk to me about capitalization. i hit the space bar twice after periods, and a capital after that would just be redundant!)
don't care if i ever get back.

OK, now I know you must be a copyeditor.
Copyeditors can’t wait to stick hyphens into anything that even remotely resembles a compound adjective. I have no problem with “most often misspelled” as three separate words. Often is an adverb modifying misspelled; most is an adverb modifying often.

I always understood the rule
to apply mainly to adjectival phrases made of an adjective and a noun, when used before the noun they modify (e.g. “Is Everidge a long-term answer at 1st base?”).

i'm probably wrong on this
since i’m not a real copyeditor but a book designer with an english degree, but aren’t “most often misspelled” a compound adjective modifying “words?” I mean, I don’t want hyphens in: “the 100 words that are most often misspelled.” but without the verb… 100 misspelled words, 100 often-misspelled words, 100 most-often-misspelled words? (and i bet chicago would say one of those hyphs needs to be an en-dash.)
don't care if i ever get back.

I wasn't aware of the foreign language dictionaries.
I thought it was just Webster’s New World.
I may have to explore the foreign ones some day. Are they foreign-foreign, or just translating dictionaries? I have found that while, yes, you need an English-to-Xxxx dictionary to get started, you can’t really get to know a foreign vocabulary until you move past that and can look words up in a dictionary that’s solely in that language. Otherwise you’re always thinking in terms of English synonyms, which never truly captures all the nuance.

The Red Sox tried to acquire young pitcher Felix Hernandez from the Mariners in a three-team deal last week.
According to the report, the Sox gave the Mariners a list of eight prospects from which they could have selected five players.
The list reportedly included pitchers Clay Buchholz, Daniel Bard, Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone, Michael Bowden, and Felix Doubront, outfielder Josh Reddick and shortstop Yamaico Navarro.
In the deal, the Mariners would have acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres.

Holy crap.
I remember reading a statement from Zduriencik that there were inquiries about Felix and he listened but none were close to good enough. But dang, I never would have guessed that the offers were so big. That would have been a monstrous haul to pull in for one guy.

I believe it was a pick 5
The thread I read (which I can’t find at the moment, probably from Lookout Landing) suggested there were 7 or 8 players, and Jack Z could pick 5. Still impressive for one player.
by el generico on Aug 4, 2009 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Two separate offers.
The first offer was pick 5 of the 8 from Boston.
After that there was a three-way offer with San Diego where the M’s would get Adrian Gonzalez, Clay Buchholz, and some other Boston prospects, but they also give up a few prospects to SD, including Carlos Triunfel.
Theo really really wants Felix.

That right there is why the game is going to contine to be dominated by large market teams.
Teams like the Red Sox and Yankees don’t give a shit about prospects. They can just go buy new ones via ridiculous overslot payments.
Either way, do you think any player on that list is EVER going to be as good as Felix Hernandez is right now? Neither do I.

That's kinda what I meant.
Where most teams have to rely on prospects at least somewhat, teams like Boston, NY, and to an extent the Mets are able to go buy what they need.

Carlos Delgado might not be done with the Mets after all.
Delgado, who is still recovering from hip surgery, wasn’t expected to be brought back in 2010.
However, the team’s lack of faith in Daniel Murphy could lead to them re-sign the first baseman for next season.
The Mets first believed that Murphy could play left field, but that experiment didn’t work out. Now he has failed as a first baseman both offensively and defensively.

Zombies in Popular Media
This course explores the history, significance, and representation of the zombie as a figure in horror and fantasy texts. Instruction follows an intense schedule, using critical theory and source media (literature, comics, and films) to spur discussion and exploration of the figure’s many incarnations. Daily assignments focus on reflection and commentary, while final projects foster thoughtful connections between student disciplines and the figure of the zombie.
