BEAST!
Chris Carter entered a villiage where an ogre had devoured all the crops and livestock, and Chris Carter asked the people of the village, "Have you no beasts of labor with which to pay tribute me?" And the people answered, "No, the ogre has taken our livestock," and with one mighty swing of his bat Chris Carter felled the ogre, and Chris Carter did proclaim, "Let my people be free," and it was so. - Aufheben

I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've seen someone hit three homers in a game in person

The first one was a no-doubter
Second was a bit higher, I think. The last one seemed like it was up there a while and was more down the left field line.
All three cleared with plenty to spare.

I've actually seen it in person several times
but not in quite some time. They are memorable.
The very first time I saw it — in person, no less — I was a very young child. Jim Hickman hit three HRs for the Mets.
My first was HoJo for the Mets
I also saw Big Mac do it twice

He was probably just responding to your post the other day about him not squaring any balls up for you to take pictures.

King Carter is coming along nicely.
I approve!
Wallace still looking good, too!

By the way, could anyone tell me if this looks too bright or too dark?
Editing on a new laptop for the first time and I put the brightness settings to the middle, but I need to see how it is for others to know if I need to change it a bit.

Looks gorgeous.
None of the details are obscured, and none of the colors are washed out. Great picture, btw.

Are you shooting in raw?
It looks really good to me, but on my computer it looks like the shadows could be opened up just a little more.
I'm not yet
Tried it a little and it took up way too much space on my card, and I have an 8 GB in there.
I tend to play with the contrast a bit in editing later, though.

I shoot raw with an 8GB card
I have a D200 and the files are 15.4 MB, so I can hold about 480 or so on the card. Of course, I don’t shoot sports much, so 480 is plenty. I shoot mostly film and I get 15 shots per roll, so 480 seems like a huge amount.
Anyway, if you are using Photoshop, you should be able to open jpegs in Adobe Camera Raw and selectively adjust shadow and highlight areas. I love ACR, and I love shooting raw because I can adjust the white balance so easily after the fact. After making corrections in ACR, I usually just adjust levels and curves, reduce noise, and sharpen. If they’re portraits, I may touch up blemishes too. It’s fast and looks good.
That's a great photo, Flashfire
And a beautiful swing by Carter. He’s on balance, with an excellent weight shift (just his back toe still on the ground, and his left leg almost vertical), his swing looks pretty level (not rolling over with his top hand), and his head is down.
Also, interesting that he uses a traditional ash bat, not maple.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Not interesting at all.
Maple bats suck. Carter would be exploding those stupid things every other time he made contact.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
The guy has a great ash.

Gigantic.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
He likes big ash, and he can't deny!
It should be a rule, honestly.

Just imagine
A lineup with Carter, Everidge, Wallace and Powell. The ground may sink a little beneath them.
Sweet Jesus
With Blanton on the mound and Powell behind the plate, if Raj were in center he’d be half way up Mt. Davis.
I would say he's "head & shoulders" above the other guys in that picture

Defensive scouting report on Brett Wallace.
"Surely these gents are talking about the dashing rookie campaign of southpaw Jamie Moyer. Now, that cat is on the up and up." JLaff, in 1929.
He shortarms his throws.

and I don’t see good range at all. That video made me think the opposite of the article it accompanies.

he seems to purposely be working on fielding with one hand
At the 23 second mark, he fields a ground ball with 2 hands, and seems to get told that’s a no no. You see him look to the home plate area and then swipe with his glove.
Also seemed to be trying to keep his left foot back or at least even. This makes sense when you’re fielding a one handed ground ball as a third baseman, you need to have your hips opened some to allow you to sweep the glove back, as the drill appears to be intended, and also allows a better angle to step the right foot across, square to the first base bag. This especially true from the grass, and not deep (which would be more like a SS). Compare this with the SS footwork, where you prefer your left to be slightly ahead of your right foot (maybe heel to toe) as you field “through” the ball, and now step across with your right foot, plant and throw. It’s just about the angle.
Jeter fielding a ground ball, left foot in front. Jeter Link
"...bulk of his career"
Is that a fat joke?
by mikedaviswhereareyou on Sep 1, 2009 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions
His throwing motion is pretty bad, yeah.
That’s definitely the first thing I noticed. His fielding mechanics are pretty shaky, too. It’s almost as if he can’t/doesn’t bend down far enough to cleanly get to the ball so he’s forced to swipe at it instead.
Thankfully Wash will be able to ohhhhhh wait.

to put things in perspective...
ryan howard age 24 season between AA and AAA (same year he got his first taste of the majors):
131(G),111(H),18(2B),1(3B),37(HR),102(RBI),46(BB),129(SO)
chris carter age 22 season between AA and AAA (with about 20 less games at the AAA level than howard above):
131(G),174(H),42(2B),2(3B),27(HR),113(RBI),82(BB),124(SO)
pretty epic so far.
EVERYONE PLEASE STOP USING HOWARD AS A PROSPECT COMPARISON
his path to the majors was so unique that using it as a baseline for comparison really doesn’t make sense.

explain
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
hes a college player
who didn’t hit the first two years in the minors. In the FSL which is the biggest pitchers league in the minors he slightly gains in his ISO but is K to BB rate is 3:1 and his walk rate dropped and his k rate rose. Which really shouldn’t predict at 24 that he has .120 ISO gain and a .340 ISO at AA but rather a prospect that won’t work out. Which kinda looked flukey in itself because his doubles to homers rate just craters. That and the number of people that have their first full season in the big leagues and win the MVP at 26 is very very very small.
Chris Carter entered a villiage where an ogre had devoured all the crops and livestock, and Chris Carter asked the people of the village, "Have you no beasts of labor with which to pay tribute me?"
