Earlier this season,

a great many of us wanted him to not make the plane ride back from St. Pete, because he repeatedly screwed up in big, big ways. He couldn’t hit, he couldn’t field and even his running appeared disjointed and poor. Let’s see if he can maintain this pace the rest of the season. Perhaps he has “turned it on” or turned the corner or whatever, but let’s wait and see.

Yeah, I'm in the group of apologetic previous Raj-bashers

but truthfully he’s playing WAY differently than he did before. He missed catchable balls in the OF and messed up on the bases, making you wonder why he couldn’t even excel with the one skill he had, speed. Now he’s just hitting, running, fielding, and playing really well. I’m thrilled for him and for us.

by OmahaHi on Aug 3, 2009 10:14 PM PDT up reply actions

A couple observations:
  • Tommy Everidge has won two games already by not making the last out in a game the A’s rallied to win (2B off Papelbon at Fenway, single off Wilson tonight).
  • Ron Washington really messed up, IMO. O’Day would have pitched to Cust, Sweeney, Everidge, Ellis, Patterson. Much better for Texas than having Wilson face 4 consecutive batters (Nomar, Everidge, Ellis, Rajai) who handle LHP really well.

It was. It's just that the odds of them doing it against a RHP were a lot lower

and Wash should have known that. The way he played it, the Rangers were going to get the short end of the matchups almost the entire inning.

does this mean

that everidge could be our next marco? and although washington may not have handled it ideally, he only really knows ellis out of that bunch. nomar has been hurt and old, everidge is very inexperienced and rajai is not known for his hitting. i think that having his closer try to finish the game is logical

by thewhizkid on Aug 3, 2009 10:18 PM PDT up reply actions

They get scouting reports

I agree Wash probably knows only a little about Everidge, but he must have known coming into this series that Davis had been tearing the cover off the ball for the last month.

I think this is why you don't see a lot of LH closers

There are too many RH hitters that can rake against them.

by sirbed on Aug 3, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought the Texas Manager was crazy

Putting so many pitchers in there. By the time the As found someone they could hit off, there weren’t nobody left in the pen. If a guy’s getting his outs, I’m not a fan of the LHP/RHP thing. At least let him give up one hit before yanking him, especially with a 2-run gap.

And speaking of Texas pitchers, I thought that the Feliz 4Ks/6outs thing was really sweet. I’m not glad it came against the As (but then, we won, so it didn’t cost us), but I’m always up for a new pitcher to have a great feeling in his first night of MLB, and wake up the next a.m. feeling it. Good for him.

It was really a great game…..But my complaint is with Direc-TV and the EI pkg…..do they really have to cut the feed within 1 or 2 minutes of the game being over…..I barely got to watch any replays or enjoy the on field celebration……by the time the mob had formed it was gone…ugh! Not like there was another feed they had to cut to, it was the last game in progress!!!!

Patterson or Davis

Seeing the A’s want to give Patterson a chance how about giving Davis 2 months to prove he is more than a 4th outfielder. Maybe regular ABs will make him a good player.
