GOG 2009 #35
I don't have much time to chat now, but I have to say that this long stretch of consecutive games is getting to me. There's no rest for the GOG writer!
And now it's time for a four game set against Texas. You have to be cheering for the A's against some AL West competition, but wouldn't it also be nice if the Angels didn't win the division?

GOG #35 :: Just Keep Playing (34 points possible)
Four game series vs Texas Rangers -- August 3-6
UPDATE -- answers added below in bold
- Series outcome [3 points] 3-1 Oakland
- Braden has slipped since the All Star break, but against the Rangers this season he has compiled a 1.64 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 11 innings (on the other hand, his WHIP for those 11 innings is 1.455, so maybe he got a bit lucky). Predict IP/ER/K for Dallas [2 points each] Braden missed his start
- It probably won't shock anyone to hear that the Rangers have a whopping .112 point difference between their OPS home and away. They also average more than one extra run per game in Arlington. How many runs do the Rangers score over a four game set in Oakland? [3 points] Rangers score only 13 runs
- In July, the Athletics lived up to their name, stealing 31 bases in 26 games. The last time they stole more than 30 bases in a month was May 1992, boosted by Rickey's 17 swipes. How many stolen bases for Oakland in the series? [3 points] 6 stolen bases
- Twenty-two year old lefty Derek Holland was brought up in late April and has both started games and done some work out of the bullpen. He lived up to the hype in his last start, allowing 2 hits and 1 run over 8.2 innings (just one out from the complete game!), with 10 strikeouts to 1 walk. Predict his hits, walks, and earned runs allowed [2 points each] 4 H, 4 BB, 3 ER
- After Sweeney's infamous pinch hit appearance against Toronto, how many called strike three's get hung on Oakland hitters? [3 points] 10 Ks looking
- While Geren's usage of Andrew Bailey has slowed a little bit since it peaked in May, he is still on pace for 95 innings this year. Last year he threw 110.1 innings, but that included 15 starts. How many innings does Bailey throw in this series? [3 points] 1 IP for Andrew Bailey
- Which rookie shortstop gets more hits, Andrus or Pennington? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Pennington wins 4-1 (but Andrus played only 3 games)
- How many games does Everidge get to start, with the return of .193 hitter Jason Giambi? [3 points] Everidge starts all four games
- The Rangers bullpen is the third best in the AL by ERA (after Boston and Tampa Bay). How many runs can the A's score against Texas relievers? [3 points] A's score 7 off of the Rangers pen
Sorry about getting this one posted so late. You only have 4+ hours to post your guesses before the first pitch, so get going.
Results
Well, the last GOG was one of the highest scoring and now this is one of the lowest. It's not surprising that no one got the Braden question right, but there were also some pretty tough questions in there (Rangers runs scored, A's strikeouts looking). I'm just glad that the minimum score was only -1.
Overall scoring statistics
- mean = 2.06667 points
- standard deviation = 2.40436 points
