Bring up Cunningham
Anyone else secretly hoping that Davis, Sweeney, or Hairston will get hurt so that Cunningham can be called up? Honestly, I have not seen Cunningham in action in the minors other than the few ABs he had as an A's. Numbers-wise, this guy is hitting the crap out of minor league pitching, for average and power. Make him a full time player next season and I doubt he will fare worse than Hairston or Sweeney. AC is putting up amazing numbers in the minors and I'm curious as hell to see him tackle major league pitching.

Solution
I’m still not sold on Hairston/Rajai as long term options, who are having career yrs in their late 20’s. But they are the best options for now, plus they are needed right handed bats. Both are signed for a couple more years. Sweeney is in his 2nd full season at age 24. His offense would be terrible if he remained in an OF corner spot, but would be passable if he remained in CF. Actually, all 3 Sweeney/Rajai/Hairston would be better off in CF.The other issues is when Cunningham or Buck are called up at some point, they need to play every day.

My theory is that because left/right field are not premium defense positions,
the A’s (and a lot of other teams) probably feel its worth keeping certain corner outfielders in the minors a little longer while they really figure out their offense. Indeed, a list of current corner OFs who never received regular MLB playing time until they were 26 or older would include the following:
Brad Hawpe, Ben Zobrist, Jason Werth, Cody Ross, Michael Cuddyer, Ryan Ludwick, Jack Cust, Raul Ibanez, Randy Winn, Eric Byrnes, Scott Hairston and Nelson Cruz.
I’d imagine a lot of players on that list were encouraged to focus on honing their old-player skills during their development. For a corner outfielder, power is generally considered more important than contact skills, defense, or speed, so its not like these guys are automatically going to go into decline if they’re still under club control at age 30 (although its pretty unlikely such players will continue to be productive well into their FA years – if their bat speed or vision deteriorate they have little left to offer).
Its also worth noting a lot of these guys had Buck-like campaigns of 300 PAs or less prior to their age 26 years. And that’s part of my point too. If Cunningham comes up and rides the pine for a couple weeks this isn’t necessarily cause for alarm, nor does it mean the A’s don’t have high hopes for him, or don’t believe he can be a starter. He’s only 23, has a sub-.900 OPS at AAA, and he definitely looks like he could add some muscle to that rakish frame of his. For that matter, Buck, at 25, may not be as much of a lost cause as his recent numbers would indicate.
Also, fwiw, I don’t think Cunningham would be eligible to return to Oakland until the beginning of September since he was sent down less than two weeks ago (personally I would have DL’d Hairston and kept Cunningham around – making a guy with sore hammies play everyday is tempting fait, IMO, and there’s no reason to do that at this point in the season).

It's a reasonable position
since Street/Smith for Peterson/Mortenson seems like, at best, a wash, and maybe worse than that.
However, it does appear to me that mikev was referencing Holliday and not Gonzalez.

Pretty negligible
I don’t remember exactly what his numbers were at the time he was traded, but it was probably about 2.5 WAR.
Even assuming he’d have been replaced by an actual replacement level player, 2.5 wins is probably not worth more than $3-4M in Oakland’s market. And that’s being generous.

That's a pretty foolish bet.
Considering he’s already hit 8 in about 170 or so at bats. Prorate it out to a full season of about 450 at bats, he’d eclipse 20 easily. And if he plays a full season, he’d probably get more than 450 at bats anyways
Gonzalez is hitting .290/.358/.538 this season. His home/away splits:
Home: .284/.341/.543
Away: .295/..373/.534
So his numbers aren’t really the Coors effect (which is overstated nowadays anyways); he’s legitmately hitting well everywhere he goes. His wOBA is a staggering .384. But perhaps the best indication that he’s improved tremendously is his walk rate, from 4.1% last year to 9.1% this year. An improvement of 5% is a pretty big deal. All while playing his customary great defense.
Wallace has a long ways to go before he can come close to providing CarGon value. I really wish people would drop the whole “CarGon sucks and is overrated” attitude while before, when he was on the A’s, he was a “young, upcoming talent”.

It seems the moment some players are traded away some fans automatically become critical of them to a fault
I don’t know what hero66’s position on Gonzalez was while he was here but it’s not like Gonzalez ever sucked. He has talent but he’s a young player trying to harness it and get used to Major League pitching. He’s also showing signs of having the ability to succeed. But, now that he’s with Colorado it’s like he’s a hack or something.
Look at some Giants fans who LOVED Tim Alderson while he was in their system, talking him up as a future ace, but the moment they traded for Freddy Sanchez it’s like “Well, at best he MIGHT make it as a 4th or 5th starter. No big deal.”

Well
I was never a fan of Cargo, before he came to Oakland, when he was in Oakland, or after he left.
I know he’s raking right now, but it’s a SSS and just a hot streak. I wouldn’t be shocked if he never figures it out.
Point is, we have a glut of outfielders, and I’d rather have the big bat in Wallace than the toolsy Cargo who would further complicate things.

and like the outfielders, there isn’t a single one of them who has actually proven his ability. I see essentially no difference between the positions in terms of “team need.”

Thing is
We already have a couple of outfielders in Brown/Desme who have great tools, limited strike zone judgment, and good defense. We don’t have many bats like Wallace’s, and it appears the A’s will at least give him a cameo at 3rd, for whatever that’s worth.

Yeah, and Gonzalez is 23 and was brought up a little too soon last year, which didn't do him any favors
He really should have had a full year in AAA. Prior to last season he had all of ten games in AAA with Tucson. Then last year he played a total of 46 in Sacramento and 85 in Oakland. No wonder he had his struggles.
You can point to SSS as a reason why you think it’s just a hot streak and he’ll never really figure it out, but I can point to it as a reason why I think he IS starting to figure it out, especially since so far there’s evidence that it’s not just a Coors Field bump.
He’s definitely got 20-homer potential based on what he’s done in the minors. I don’t know how he can’t if he earns regular playing time and performs up to his capabilities. I think the A’s gave up on him too soon when they were lured by the chance to get Holliday.

That's actually quite logical
the moment some players are traded away some fans automatically become critical of them
For any given player there are going to be a bunch of people who don’t like him. But suddenly he becomes an A, so what are we going to do? Are we going to keep ragging on him and say, “boo, that guy’s a loser!” No, of course not. He’s an A, and we root for the laundry, so we put our dislike on the shelf and we hope for the best from the guy. Deep down you still don’t really like the guy, but being an A’s fan trumps that.
Then later he’s traded away, so now suddenly he’s no longer an A. What happens then? We go back to hating him, of course.
To the observer it appears that fans suddenly turn on a guy as soon as he traded, but it makes perfect sense. Only some fans turn on him, and those are the ones who never really liked him in the first place, and the only thing that kept it in check was him wearing the A’s uniform.
(I have no opinion on CarGon, by the way. But I’ve been through this with other A’s I didn’t really like.)
"Go ahead and overachieve, you scrappy Brett-Favre-colored walk-takers." —Rev Halofan

It's not really that, though
People are more than willing to point out a player’s faults. Look at how it was with Emil Brown. When they screw up, they get hammered for it. He was definitely not well-liked by a lot of people here but I think most fans were rooting for him every time he stepped to the plate.
I’m talking more along the lines of people who act like a player’s great and has loads of promise while he’s here but he sucks and has no future when he’s no longer with the team. That’s just a brand of homerism I don’t like. If he was good enough to satisfy someone here, there’s no reason the moment he wears another team’s jersey he should be viewed as some scrub or something like that.
Good is good and bad is bad, regardless of what team someone is playing for.

the A’s should be starting Buck, Cunningham and Patterson at the MLB level, just like they’re doing with Pennington. As a matter of fact, Barton should be starting and not platooning w/ Everidge and Garciaparra. They know what they have with thier current starters (not much). Give these guys 100 consistent ABs before the end of the season so the A’s brass can determine if they are going to move forward with them or cut bait. River Cats be damned – I don’t care if they get pressure-packed playoff ABs at the AAA level. I’m not sure that has that big of a developmental impact on a player. Bench the known quantities in favor of potential quality.

I generally agree... but a couple things need to be considered.
Sweeney is only 24 years old, so he could still improve his hitting. Everidge deserved to be playing in the bigs because of the year he was having in the minors. Davis has been the A’s best hitter in the second half. Because he plays solid D, he deserves to compete for a starting job next year.
Nomar should not get one more AB this year unless it’s a pinch hit AB in the 14th inning.
I also tend to agree with the comment above that said that corner OFs can stay down in the minors longer to figure out their hitting and develop the power stroke. If Buck, Cunningham, Davis, Sweeney, and Hairston get the bulk of the ABs next year, we might be looking at 50 combined HRs or less.
