The A's are Quite Simply Just Terrible!!!!
I am an A's fan living in Seattle. I have watched with dismay the last three games on local TV as the A's were swept with ease. The A's are terrible. They have no life, no passion, and had no chance to win even one of these games. The M's are not that good. The three starters that shut down the A's were nothing special, and were the equivalent of a # 3 and two # 5's, and they all made the punchless A's look.......punchless!
When you consider the four team division the A's have no chance to be anything but # 4. Did Billy Beane channel the Pirates or is it the Royals? As an A's fan I have never been so discouraged. Should Major League Baseball take up the issue of contraction again the A's would be under consideration to just disappear....much the same way this season did before Memorial Day.
Can anyone talk me off the ledge?

Relax...
The A’s were horrible in this series, yes, but they have played better baseball since the break. Are they where they want to be? Obviously not, but when you have a bunch of rookies in your starting rotation and a horrible offense, what exactly do you expect? This pitching staff will continue to gain experience and improve. Now the offense? We’re just going to have to be patient for guys like Carter, Wallace, Weeks, and Cardenas. Then we have to hope that Green and Stassi develop. And hope for guys like Barton, Buck, and Cunningham to come around when given the shot.
And you say we didn’t have any chance to win any of these games? An error cost us last night’s game and an error hurt us tonight and stranding too many runners. We played horrible baseball this weekend, especially the defense and hitting with runners on, but any of these games could have gone either way. Oh yeah, the pitching gave up a few too many HRs to a team like this…

Was this a weekend series?
I’m looking at the wrong calendar.

The A's played horribly...
in the ‘weekend’ series. Here’s a news flash, they play horribly quite often, both weekdays and ‘weekends’.

what exactly are you arguing?
Obviously the A’s have played horrible baseball this season, you can look at the standing and figure that out. My point was they have played better since the break. What do you expect from this team? A playoff contender with this roster? You couldn’t tell they gave up on the season after trading Holliday and Cabrera?

WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!
But seriously, you should look at it thusly……
2009 = finished, look forward to Carters and Wallaces and Cardenas’.
You’re welcome.

the A's have been very inconsistent
but they have been on the whole enjoyable to watch during the second half of this season. They just finished a mostly well played homestand (I attendedfour of those games).
So don’t judge them or the whole organization by this admittedly disappointing series.
"Inconsistent" is the better word. Doesn't make it any less frustrating to watch, though.
In 2008 I was watching a team that was rebuilding. In 2009 I feel like I'm watching a team that just sucks.
It's pretty clear you haven't watched them much since the All-Star Break
They’ve played much better than this.

Really??
They’re 18-22 in the second half (.450), which is no better than they’ve played the rest of the year.
But they're PLAYING better
They’re not that talented, so they’re still not going to win a ton of games, but prior to this series the quality of play has been so much more acceptable that you can actually see how the team could be good soon.

Actually, they're playing .450 in the second half vs .430 in the first half.
So they are playing better.
by LoneStranger on Aug 27, 2009 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions
Have you watched them at all in the second half?
They ARE better than they were before, and .450 is better than it was prior to moving Holliday and Cabrera. They run more, they hustle more, and they’re more exciting to watch than they were before.

To describe this team simply
they are overachieving underachievers, being competitive but just not having quite the right tools to pull it out at the end, yet its still fun to watch which is something that wasn’t happening

Anyone ever seen a "lifeless" winning team?
How about a “fun, passionate” bunch of losers?
Yeah, didn’t think any of you had either.

The A's record...
should have given you your first clue not to expect a top notch team. Plus I am an a longtime A’s fan and I have often been more discouraged than I am currently feeling.
At least theres a vision as to where
the team wants to go. Could you say that in 1977, 1983 or 1996? No you couldn’t. At least there’s a strong crop of pitchers, something they did not have in either of those eras.
Just saying that there is a silver lining here.
I'll have a sandwich and a draft(sic). - Bill King (RIP)
I am hopeful for the future.
it does seem that the pitching may pan out to something really good in future years.
M's not much better
the A’s are playing out the season with no bench help. The A’s could have taken all 3 games but instead they just tested the guys out there. having Nomar and Powell as your only bench players limits your pinch hitting. Geren has to many relief pitchers because of the young arms on the staff. Kennnedy can’t hit lefties but plays because of the lack of back ups.
M's are a bit worse
by their Pythagorean record. Oakland’s offense is pretty bad, but can you imagine averaging half a run less per game? That’s what the Mariners have been doing this season (4 runs/game vs. 4.5 for Oakland).
That's great, but...
…you only get credit for winning games. Everything else is fluff.
Ok, you get credit for making money, too.
In 2008 I was watching a team that was rebuilding. In 2009 I feel like I'm watching a team that just sucks.
I actually HOPE the A's lose lots of games while maintaining a good pythagorean record
for two reasons:
1. higher draft pick, and
2. I look like a genius when I correctly predict improvement next season.

Based on some of your comments of late, you’d also advocate trading said higher draft pick before they or the team fully develops while their trade value is still highest.

I’m guessing you were in a hurry when you responded.

Let me fix that for you:
before this series, post AS break we’ve been playing
pretty wellbetter.
.450 second half vs .430 first half. But I get what you’re saying. Once you give up on the season you can stop looking at the overall game result and enjoy the individual events within the game.

LOL
When we were winning earlier this month, we were “exciting”, “fun to watch”, improving.
We actually lose (three close) games (gasp!) and now we suck.

I love good spin.
Let’s see… in 3rd straight losing season, and only 1 post-season in the last 6 years (counting this year). Gotta love the optimism. LOL!
Sorry, but the luster of 2000-2003 wore off long ago. It’s definitely something to be proud of and remember positively, but it has no relevance to today.

so if for next decade
you were guaranteed 5 playoff appearances, you wouldn’t be happy?
Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up!!
Guaranteed?
A few points…
1) It’s never guaranteed.
2) The past doesn’t predict the future.
3) The post I was responding to was full of optimism… not wholly unwarranted, granted… but it failed to note that all the good stuff they were excited about was grouped together at the beginning of the last decade, and all the unmentionable crap stuff is grouped together at the end of the last decade… IOW, right now.
Take the three losing seasons, for example. If they were scattered around, and more just off years, not such a big deal. But they’re not. We’re in them right now, and it still remains to be seen whether we will recover as planned or not. Just ask Indians fans. A couple years ago they knew they were on the brink of another great run, too.
We have cause for hope and excitement, but talking about guarantees is getting a little ahead of the real world. There are no guarantees.
In 2008 I was watching a team that was rebuilding. In 2009 I feel like I'm watching a team that just sucks.
And most of those five...
were exactly that, just appearances! Really tired of hearing and reading about the genius of Billy Beane. OBP, OBP, OBP, strikeout, popout, groundout…no runs.

On the Fox sports website...
the A’s are only the 10th biggest stiffs in baseball… not bad (the Mets are #1).
I entirely hope the A's win as many games as possible
after all, I am an A’s fan and a season ticket holder. My fandom doesn’t depend on wins and losses, but it’s certainly more enjoyable when they win.
I'm a little strange that way
I turn on the game to root for my favorite team to win.
