Bobby Crosby's Dad breaks silence;bashes beane, claims no injury

http://www.presstelegram.com/moresports/ci_13197291

I live in Long Beach area and came across this article in today's Long Beach Press Telegram. As you know Bobby Crosby went to LB State and not sure if this has been posted yet, my apologies in advance if it has. Not even sure if I posted the link right. I typically just read AN.

Star-divide

Basics from article:

"Crosby is not hurt"

"That he has been messed with"

"No chance he will sign with Oakland"

"He hasn't been treated properly by Beane. Theyre gona make a movie about Beane with Brad Pitt. What is it going to be, a comedy?"

You know what?

I understand it sucks to Bobby to basically be told by the A’s that they would play ANYONE but him, buy what has he done to deserve playing time?

If Crosby were actually hitting the ball he would get played more—period. But as long as Crosby is making Pennington (a future backup shortstop) look like Ricky freakin’ Henderson he’ll be lucky to get regular playing time on the Nationals.

Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

I'd be absolutely shocked

if another team gave Crosby a starting job next year. And even his rookie year wasn’t all that great. Any other year and he’d not likely have won the ROY.

+1

I’m guessing the A’s helped his career by making him a utility player. Now he’s marketable as a 1B, 3B and SS.

by sf drift king on Aug 27, 2009 9:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Problem being...

…he still seems to think of himself as a good starting SS. He may turn down what may be a better offer to take a starting SS job with a lesser team and/or at less money. Potentially to his own detriment, of course.

In 2008 I was watching a team that was rebuilding. In 2009 I feel like I'm watching a team that just sucks.

by UncleLeo on Aug 28, 2009 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions

But if starting at SS is what he really wants to do,

why shouldn’t he sign with a team that will start him there? If he has to take less money of play for a worse team, so what? He’s got plenty of money. And maybe playing the position he wants to play is more important to him than what team he plays for.

Nothing at all "wrong" with it. I think you misunderstood my post.

What I meant was that he may not be thinking it all the way through. It may be what he wants… it may be whet he gets… it may not end up serving him well in the long term. One of those “be careful what you wish for” crossroads he may likely be facing.

Just speculating on what may be offered him in the off-season. Nobody knows what will be offered.

In 2008 I was watching a team that was rebuilding. In 2009 I feel like I'm watching a team that just sucks.

You know the best comedy comes from real life situations...

and the funniest situation I encounter is the pitch following an 0-2 count to Crosby…

It gets a bit repetitive, but still quality.

Thanks for posting this...

I actually laughed for the first time today. Man, Ed Crosby is in for a huge wake-up call… His son stinks. Who in the world is going to give him a chance to be a starting SS?!?!? Don’t these people get it? Bobby Crosby’s ship has sailed. His family should be stoked that he is getting millions of dollars to pretty much do nothing.

Marco didnt suck here, either.

He was also able to break out with the A’s when three other teams wouldn’t give him the time of day. Yeah, Oakland was horrible for Scutaro’s career.

by humdinger on Aug 26, 2009 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Ed Crosby has no idea what he's talking about

It’s not just that Bobby is not going to get a starting job anywhere (in the majors, anyway). Did he really say that Scutaro, Byrnes, and Swisher are doing BETTER since they left the A’s? Really? I mean, maybe Scutaro, this year, although any thinking person would figure that 33 year olds don’t suddenly get better. Byrnes had one year where about on par with his best year in Oakland, despite moving to a better hitter’s park. Swisher? His year in Chicago was awful. He’s been good for the Yanks, but not any better than he was for the A’s.

by ozzman99 on Aug 25, 2009 7:53 PM PDT reply actions

Crosby should actually be THANKING Beane.....why?

Because BoCro is a horrible hitting SS and is avg “at best” def SS – and no one would have given him a starting job next year and probably not even a backup spot – BUT – Beane turned him into a UTL inf that can play 3b,ss,2b,1B and even OF if needed and that is the ONLY reason he will be on a big league club next year.

Here is the proof

Scutaro is of course having a career year (and better than anything Crosby— the guy the horrible beane decided to keep— has ever done)— but he came up in the Mets’ organization and was essentially the same player for them as he was in Oakland— so that’s the fault of “Billyball”?

As for the other examples Mr. Expert Crosby cites, well um…., no.

Swisher ahd an OPS+ of 125 and 127 his last two years as an A. He’s been 92 and 120 since.

Byrnes had an OPS+ of 108-111 and then 112 the year the A’s traded him (2005, I believe)— he’s never been that high since.

So in fact Mr. Crosby the opposite of what you claim about these two players is true. Sad fact is that Billy Beane trusted your son so much he let an AL MVP go, and, injuries or no injuries, your son never lived up to expectations. Good Riddance

The last thing you want to do after being putting on the phantom DL for sucking, is to broadcast it in the news. It’s like the execs of AIG going to the public and complain how the administration wouldn’t let them take their bonuses. It’s not like the A’s only taught BoCro to take the 1st pitch and not be aggressive, they taught everyone, including the guy who’s taking BoCro’s job right now.

by asfansince1989 on Aug 25, 2009 8:43 PM PDT reply actions

Ed may be right...

…that the A’s organization’s strategy for hitting sucks. And it could have to do with teaching about always taking the first pitch. In the book Moneyball, I remember Beane being quoted as saying that you can’t teach patience…and then the A’s have spent the past few years trying, which might have thrown hitters off, making them do things that weren’t in their comfort zone - per what happened earlier this year with Holliday and his “tutoring” by Mark McGuire. It’s also possible the organization has shifted strategies a bit, at least that’s my hope.

The rest of the article is wishful thinking. I don’t see what any organizational approach has to do with Bobby Crosby being a sucker for the low outside pitch.

yes. indeed. otherwise, why would the A's care...? or me even?

it happened months before spring training even. with bobby in tow. in irvine. it was well reported at the time because there was barely any other baseball news around that early. (and actually, it’s closer to go around the block the other way and say that mcgwire was coaching holliday AFTER the trade. the trade from colorado.)

but my question was about the motive. did the A’s have mcgwire change holliday’s approach as a team-tactical project or did mcgwire and holliday get together on their own volition?

i ask this question because i’m trying to figure out how the A’s “teach” if at all. this one training seems important because it also touches on the A’s dubious intentions for bobby at the time (the time being january. focus zonis, focus.). did they send McG to work on bobby’s swing too? or was it indie motivation all around? probably indie, right? i mean, bobby was fighting for a spot and holliday was probably freaking about coming down from colorado’s air.

I find it amazing that the A's haven't released Crosby yet

since he, and now apparently his “entourage,” have pretty much been as negative toward the organization as possible. Isn’t there some part of a player’s contract which involves some kind of duty of loyalty toward his employer?

I suppose the only reason they’re keeping him at this point is just to prevent him from getting another job for as long as possible.

Really, though, I have to say— I’m getting pretty fucking sick of these rants by awful, awful baseball players. Last year it was Emil Brown, year before that it was Bobby Kielty… I mean, not to put to fine a point on it, shut up. You’re terrible. You’re a waste of money and oxygen.

The one example of Crosby being badly treated by the A's

was the misdiagnosis of his back injury, which turned out to be a fracture. That matters, obviously, but Crosby is hardly the only A’s player who’s gotten iffy medical advice and treatment from the A’s. And the biggest problem was that the A’s kept wanting him to play even though he was hurt — kind of the opposite of what Ed is complaining about here.

I agree the utility player part may save him a few years but the only way he makes it into a big league camp is on a minor league deal. Reality for Crosby will be going from $5 million to $1 million or less. It will be put up or shut up time.

The Guy Is Getting Paid Big Bucks

Like many fans, I had some high hopes for Crosby. The bottom line is that he is 29 years old, is a poor hitter and (at best) an average defensive player. For this he is getting $5+ million. Nice job if you can get it.

I can understand his old man’s frustrations, but maybe the A’s are a better scapegoat than coming to terms that the son is only marginally better than Pop’s was.

As an A’s fan…..newsflash-Your son pretty much sucks.

BB has been more than gracious with Bobby for the past couple of years and no other team in baseball wanted him. So, why not focus on the positive? You were a mediocre ball player BUT got to make it to the show. Your son was projected to be an above average player but pretty much never really lived up to the expectations of his first season. Two ball players from the same family…that’s pretty impressive.

Charlie O used to try to do that all the time.

He’d want to make a change in the middle of the postseason, so he’d get the doctor to say the player was injured and try to get the player to sign a paper admitting it. Then he’d be able to throw him on the DL and replace him with someone tearing it up in the minors or via trade.

The Crosby Hate is Excessive

Here’s a guy who is clearly a great disappointment, who got very lucky at the financial end by having a deal negotiated that would pay him better at the end than many superior players.

And yet, as a back-up infielder, he’s pretty solid. He can play all four infield positions with a certain mastery (it took a while, but he’s there now); his hitting is putrid, but he does have some pop in his bat and can jack one out every now and then. He’s no Marco Scutaro in his prime, but then again he’s no Gregorio Petit either (or at least what we’ve seen of Gregorio Petit).

He’ll probably have to take a minor league contract next year, unless one of the major contenders decides it’s important to have an experienced back-up who can play shortstop like a league average starter, and who can be a regular if someone goes down for a while.

That’s Bobby Crosby. He’s a decent back-up infielder. No more, but also no less.

It's not Crosby hate, so much

It’s not Crosby hate so much as hating the A’s management giving the guy a chance way after it was warranted, and not having a viable alternative. Remember when Ken Macha kept putting him #3 in the order? It wasn’t because he was a #3 hitter, it was because the A’s projected him to be a #3 hitter at some point in the undefined future. Keep in mind that this was back when the A’s were contending, so it did matter.

all great baseball players fail a high percentage of the time. bobby crosby certainly fails a high percentage of the time. thus, it stands to reason that bobby crosby might just be a great baseball player.

This is a verification...

…of what I’ve long suspected: that the A’s use the DL for non-disability related reasons. I am not sure if this is wrong or right, but it seems that the DL is used as a loophole for roster-related issues. Strained oblique, rash on the ankle, etc. etc. likely mean something else entirely.

Look across the Bay..

Rich Aurilia would have been DFA’ed/released if the Giants weren’t doing the exact same thing. They are hiding him on the DL because he sucks, but will bring him back when rosters expand so that he can ride out the season with them and retire with dignity.

Frankly, I wish the A’s had done the same with Giambi, and instead given Bobby his walking papers. Instead they’ve done Bobby a favor by letting him learn a degree of versatility to prolong his career.

by elhefe on Aug 28, 2009 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

If his release was at his request, then great.

But judging from the Beane interview, I don’t think that was the motive at the time and the move came across as a bit… cold, given all the goodwill, fanfare and upcoming bobble-head festivities – if justifiable based on performance. He didn’t perform well, but for a guy that was supposed be a DH, and occasional 1B, he did everything he was asked with humility and without bitching. In a lost season, it would have been no big deal to extend him the same rope that the Ginats are doing with Aurilia.

Not a new thought around here by any means, but the thing that astounds me about Bobby (and now his father) is how he still seems to be unaware of the high degree of suck he has attained combines with a willingness to publicy gripe about any and every percieved injustice levied upon him by the organization or anyone else. His words reek with a sense of entitlement that I find absolutely putrid and I, for one, would derive some enjoyment from seeing him unceremoniously dumped and made an example of.

by elhefe on Aug 28, 2009 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

in the case of Giambi, the A’s had a need to keep who they had on the roster and were in a major roster crunch of Giambi coming back. Giambi wasn’t doing anything really at the time, was healthy and ready to go. Yes, the timing sucked. Yes, the I’m sure it wasn’t the best of scenarios for anyone and Giambi remained entirely professional about it. BUT, he was released with enough time to catch on with someone else which based on what was going around there were teams ready to pick him up.

As for Crosby. Ditto.

That's pretty much what we're doing with Nomar isn't it?

Keeping him on the roster so he can retire with dignity.

Can't any player file a grievance anytime a team does this?

I would think the union’s strength would preclude this practice from happening very often. If Crosby is 100% healthy and he’s so angry, why isn’t he filing a grievance? (Because he’s hurt, that’s why.)

I'd love to be a fly on the wall on that one

Mediator: So, Billy, why is he on the DL? How his he hurt?
Beane: Pride. Hurt it pretty badly. Won’t ever come back from it.
Mediator: Oh. Yeah. Sorry Mr. Crosby. He’s got a fair and valid point there.

Bobby Crosby: Waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!

Ed Crosby: How DARE you upset my son???
Mrs. Crosby: I’m high as a kite right now. That’s how I endure this marriage.

Rotoworld update

Bobby Crosby ran sprints, although he has not ran the bases. Not sure what that means, as that’s also usually the outcome of one of his at-bats.

It means someone's lying about Crosby's condition

I vote Rotoworld

I’m betting he hasn’t done sprints at all.

no, he did sprints

just in a pool with a pull-buoy to keep him from using his legs.

See? Now no one’s lying.
