Nothing much to write home about from AZL. Highlight of the day goes to Leon and Fernandez for their combined no-no. Nice to be on that side considering the Rivercats were treated the same way early in the week. Ohh and I'm beginning to worry about my man crush for Chris Carter---he has really really big numbers.

When will
Carter get brought up to AAA. Clearly he’s done more than enough to warrant a promotion. I wish he and Wallace were both brought up in September.
Chew on this for awhile...
Carter has 52 extra base hits in 410 ABs. He still has a bit too many Ks (100), but he does have 66 BBs and a .418 OBP.
How can he not be Oakland’s top prospect going into next year?

I agree
There were a lot of questions about his bat, whether he would be able to adjust to the higher level and fix the strikeouts. His power appears to be down, but he’s in Midland, and some of those doubles should turn into homeruns once he moves out of there.
Personally, I thought he was going to be a Custian type hitter, low average, lots of walks, even more strikeouts, and good power numbers. I don’t think a lot of people thought he was going to hit over .300. He’s a monster prospect.
It's possibly he could be a top 10 prospect overall.
There just aren’t many prospects with 40 HR power that can hit .300. I think what he’s shown is that he can accomplish both feats, just not yet at the same time.
Either way, do you want a guy who hits .260 with 40 HRs or a guy who hits .300 with 30 HRs? Either way you’re looking at an OPS over .900.

Stockton's park
Much as the Midland park deflates HRs, the Stockton park deflates average. Stockton’s a great HR park and it showed in Carter’s stats. But his average was also very low. I had read about Stockton’s park effects and so I was expecting higher average by Carter. I was thinking .285 30 HRs. But what Carter’s doing now? Can’t say I expected that.

Both brought up to the
big leagues that is. Probably wishful thinking.
I don't want to see Carter brought up the big leagues,
but a promotion to AAA would make sense to me.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
I agree...
Give him a nice taste of AAA this year, invite him to spring training next year, send him back to AAA to start next season and see what happens. I think he projects to be in the bigs sometime in the middle of the summer next year.

Agreed
Struggling in the bigs this year may not be the best thing for his confidence.. I like his year by year promotions thus far, but it’s definitely time for AAA IMO.

Forget about Carter for a second...
the A’s need the last couple months to look at Buck, Hairston, Barton, et. al… Carter will be just fine in the minors the rest of the year.

And that's bullshit...
Giambi should not get another AB this season.
"I'm not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did." -Yogi Berra
Yea he should
definitely get a taste of AAA before the big leagues. Got a little carried away.
That's referring to Carter
As far as Giambi goes, yea he shouldn’t get any more at bats but we all know he will. I still love Giambi so it’s hard for me to diss on him. Maybe this injury will allow him to come back fresh and hit like the Giambi we all know and love.
with the number of innings our bullpen and rookie starters have pitched
we should be bringing up 3 or 4 guys in Sept and shutting some regulars down or severely limiting their pitches.
nice to see Chen healthy in Sac with his 449 OBP in SSS.
Pual Smyth in Vancouver could move up with his 0.00 and 27K in 21inn pitched
Ex-rule 5 pick Ben Copeland has a 722 OPS in AAA. I hope the A’s can do a better job with the rule 5 draft this year. trade up if needed and get a high upside guy.
"Gratuitous gesticulating together sounds even better"
Yeah I think the rule 5 draft should be about finding the next Johan Santana...
not your 4th OF.

Great!
Does this mean Weeks to AA soon?

but he is a top pick and has played pretty well in A.

I'd never looked at Cardenas's 2009 AA splits before
OPS vs. RH: .901
OPS vs. LH: .677
Home: 1.011
Road. .666
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Interesting...
Does that fall in line with his career stats?
"I'm not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did." -Yogi Berra
I dunno
I’m not sure where to find previous-season splits for minor leaguers.
Also, the home/road thing is all about the ballpark. His L/R split would be interesting to see.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
He hits .264 against left-handed pitching and .350 against right-handed pitching.

You can find it
here.
For his career, his OPS against LH is .719, a line of .279/.359/.362
OPS against RH is .792, a line of .305/.364/.411
His road/home splits are almost identical for his career:
Road: .294/.364/.411 for an OPS of .775
Home: .303/.361/.412 for an OPS of .773

btw, 2 straight good starts from mortensen in AAA
aka one of the other players in the holliday trade. shane peterson has also played well in AA. both of these guys were pretty high picks, and while they haven’t been talked about like wallace (for obvious reasons), i hope they could end up as pretty good prospects for us
I know the A's were really high on Peterson,
even though he wasn’t a high draft pick. He wasn’t a “throw-in”; he was targeted by the A’s.

Peterson so far tonight: 2 for 3 with a BB and 2 2Bs.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
i'll take 2 ER in 11 IP anytime from Mortensen
Peterson looks like another classic, no power 4th OF type that BB likes to have around as filler to me.
"Gratuitous gesticulating together sounds even better"
I don't know what you're talking about... ahem...
Buck, Cunningham, Putnam, Sweeney.
"I'm not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did." -Yogi Berra
hey, if they can hit doubles
as opposed to homers, that’s not the worst thing in the world. the problem arises when you’ve got singles hitters. sweeney certainly has been one this year, and while he still has time to change that, i’m worried that’s just what he is.
by guy incognito on Aug 2, 2009 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions
I'd be delighted if Sweeney were a singles hitter...
…because if last night’s woeful “backwards K to the 3rd power” is any indication, he’s a complete non-hitter…
Maybe enrolling in the Jack Cust Baseball Academy
wasn’t such a great move after all.

Actually it would be a GREAT idea
If he could maintain his very-much-greater-than-Cust defensive abilities, but hit more like Cust – that is, watch strike three go by an irritating number of times, but hit the damn ball out of the damn park with a frequency commensurate with his size and strength, that would be good. That would be, I don’t know, a young Mike Cameron. Maybe a poor man’s young Mike Cameron, still a damn fine thing. Much better than Sweeney v.2009, who isn’t really bad but who frustrates because there ought to be more there.
Cunningham has power
He slugged .532 and hit 17 HR in 107 games last year (his SLG was higher in AAA than in AA).
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s

Pretty sweet to see his first HR with our organization. I’ll tell you, he doesn’t look as big as everyone says he is. Mortensen looked pretty good out there too

I saw him in Sac on Thursday...
and thought the same thing. He is not fat, just real thick. I thought he looked pretty athletic at 3rd and he made a couple good digs. My concern was on his throws. He had plenty of arm, but threw low to first base 3 of 4 plays.
I knew it! The camera adds 10 pounds.

Or
Since Pennington and Patterson were called up they decided to go ahead and promote Cardenas, Weeks, and Coleman already to fill the respective voids?

Good
Means Ladendorf can play every day for Kane County.
I have no problem promoting any of the three now, even in the middle of slumps. If they can’t hack it yet, they’re just going to be right back there next year. Plus, the minor league season is considerably shorter than the big leagues; their season is fairly close to over.

I'm sure the promotions were a fait a compli prior to the slumps
Cabrera’s departure was going to set up a domino effect that moved Pennington, Cardenas, and Weeks up a notch because all were deemed ready for a shot at the next level.

maybe
i’m just saying, its a bit odd. yeah, maybe it is a psychological boost, but i’d be concerned that they might have an even harder time coming out of their slumps as they jump levels. personally, i would’ve moved weeks up about a month ago, when he was absolutely killing the ball, though i would have left cadrenas in AA to continue getting used to 3b.
by guy incognito on Aug 2, 2009 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree with this
If they’re working hard, doing what they’re supposed to do, then then can earn a promotion based on their overall production, even if they’re in a slump.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
The slumps are a real SSS phenomenon
I think players are far more often promoted based on process, i.e., when managers/coaches report that they are ready for the next level or have nothing left to learn/prove at the current level, independent of whether they happen to be 7 for their last 20 or 3 for their last 20.
