Congratulations to Adrian Cardenas for his first Triple-A home run and Dana Eveland finally had a good start.
Jemile Weeks started off hot and has cooled off since, but I’m not worried.

It should be noted that Chris Carter actually made the start out in Left Field
This is actually his 14th start this year in the OF, but if can recall, he hasn’t been out there in awhile. I don’t know whether to make anything of this or not, considering Spencer DH-ed and Peterson was at 1st, so maybe it was just a way to get all those guys in the lineup.
Secondly, after a solid last few games, Brett Wallace has brought his OPS up to .837 in 23 games with the Rivercats. Obviously, small sample size, but the 4 homers in 23 games versus 6 in 62 with Memphis is looking better. Again, small sample size, but if he can maintain these numbers through the end of the season, that will make quite a few people happy, he’s slugging about 50 points higher with Sacto…

He's been out there in RF a lot in August.
Sometimes they put him in RF and Peterson at first, and sometimes it’s Carter at first and Peterson in right. I think they’re just trying to increase Carter’s versatility. Plus, with Wallace set to play 1B for the 2010 A’s, Carter needs a new position.
until we see Wallace really playing more 1B than 3B
I think we have to assume he’ll get a shot in the bigs at 3rd. Plus, everyone has been raving about Carter’s development at 1st, that it’s not Gold Glove caliber, but it’s still much better than many assumed. So it’s too soon to be giving Carter another position until that happens.
Plus, I can’t imagine Carter being too versatile in a corner OF spot, but we’ll wait and see what happens…

I'm kind of foreseeing this rotation in the bigs if these players come up:
2010: Wallace 3B, Doolittle 1B
2011: Wallace 3B, Carter 1B, Doolittle RF
2012 on: Cardenas 3B, Wallace 1B/DH, Carter LF/DH, Doolittle RF/1B
It seems like the 2012 team would be a great candidate to use the DH rotationally, with Carter, Wallace, and maybe even Doolittle, Weeks, and Cardenas getting “partial days off” by way of DHing.

yea
just wondering. I think Doolittle is further out (but possibly mid 10 call-up) and Cardenas maybe up in 11 at some point…

I think had he been healthy this season,
Doolittle would have been on track to start at 1B in 2010, or win the RF job if personnel made that a better place for him to play. Now, I see him starting 2010 in AAA and maybe being ready in June or so.

yea i'm bummed he has been set back pretty much all year

When I was down at spring training,
scouts were raving about Doolittle like they felt he was about ready for the big leagues already. He would certainly have been up in 2009 had he not gotten hurt.

hadn't heard that...
that’s pretty cool though, so ’10 is not so far-fetched as I thought it would be after missing time.. providing he picks up where he left off…

Barton vs. Doolittle
-Barton is a better hitter.
-Barton is a better fielder.
No way Doolittle plays at 1B instead of Barton next year.
With stout hearts, and with enthusiasm for the contest, let us go forward to victory. ----Hero Defector Montgomery
I think Doolittle has shown more HR power in the minors so far
and everyone raves about his defense, so I think the A’s evaluate him as about even with Barton with the glove.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Everyone raving about his defense=someone raved about his defense when drafted and everyone repeats it
He is big and lumbering/not quick. His defensive numbers are quite bad; Barton’s are great.
Doolittles HR numbers are better, but not by all that much (5-6 over a full season) and Barton is better at in every other part of the game. Higher BA, way more BBs, fewer Ks.
With stout hearts, and with enthusiasm for the contest, let us go forward to victory. ----Hero Defector Montgomery
Did not know that Barton had 30 HR power.

IMO
Until Barton proves that he can handle major league pitching again (or even AAA pitching consistently for that matter) he’s a non-entity at this point. I feel that Wallace, Carter, and Doolittle (and maybe even Everidge) are already above or ready to pass Barton on the depth chart.

I could just as well say "Doolittle needs to prove he can handle AA pitching"....
Doolittle is not even close to passing Barton on the depth chart.

Doolittle was holding his own in AAA.
Soo not sure what he has to prove at AA. Barton outside a hot sept call up has been absolute shit with the bat. Ill take my chances with Doolittle.

I'm not sure Barton will stay in the organization, though, MikeA
With Doolittle, Wallace, and Carter in various stages of “close,” I could see the A’s moving Barton in the off-season to address another need.

Also, maybe if the A's loved him at 1B they wouldn't have moved him to the OF this year....

I definitely want Barton to start for the rest of the year
I’m firmly in the pro-Barton camp. But I think Doolittle is a good prospect, too.

Doolittle
I think they wanted to try him in the outfield because they love his bat and feel that he has the best chance to succeed in RF out of himself, Carter, and Barton. Doolittle has a decent arm in the outfield and seems to move around pretty well out there from what I hear. Personally I wouldve liked to see more of him at 3rd but I guess that experiment failed. Good thing we have some 3b candidates now with Wallace, Cardenas, and even Grant Green. I loved what I heard about Michael Spina and he’s holding his own in the low minors so far

He should have a decent arm.. he was a pitcher.
His arm I believe is scouted as above average.

He threw 94mph and most thought he should have been drafted as a pitcher
that would qualify as a plus arm.

Why not have him as "Super LOOGY!!!!!!"
He starts in RF, watches Casilla give up a leadoff triple in the 7th, takes the mound and gets a key lefty out, then returns to RF to catch a medium fly ball and gun the runner out at the plate.

That has been done with alternating righty lefty pitchers in the past.

Question
Is that Tyson Ross who pitched yesterday? If so, how the heck did he make it to AA so fast? Wasn’t he injured and/or performing less than stellarly? He was drafted just last year. I don’t understand how he got to where he is, he sure seems to have been put on the fast track by the A’s organization.

I get the sense they want to get all the value they can out of him
before the inevitable injury occurs.

Will Carter be a top 5 overall prospect going into next season?
I think the real question is: how can he not be?

I hope so, but I believe we'll see him all over the place on different rankings
Baseball Prospectus is obviously high on him, I think Sickels might give him a good grade, but we’ll see where Baseball America puts him. He virtually doesn’t exist to them. He didn’t even make their top 50 in this midseason’s top prospects.

I'll bet he gets an A- from Sickels
unless defense brings him down. He seems like a solid A- hitting prospect even by Sickels’ tough grading curve.

How can he not be?
He doesn’t play a premium defensive position and isn’t young for his level.
So, there are negatives, but obviously, there are way more positives.
I put together a top 100 list last month, and Carter was 24th IIRC. With his recent surge, he’d be pushing into the 15-20 range IMO now.
I just added this to the front page

Everidge
OK, I know this is not a minor league comment, but I loved watching Everidge yesterday. When Everidge was holding Jeter on first, I thought he was going to ask for an autograph. Tommy looked so happy to be there. And when someone hit a foul shot up the first base line, Tommy THREW his body in front of it. No way it was getting past him. Baseball is a great game.
Wallace is on fire!
Brett Wallace just hit another home run today, which i believe makes three HRs in the last three games. Me likey the power!!
Beane, get ready
Move to San Jose or whatever it takes to generate some bucks, but in a few years, we are going to need to give multi-year contracts to Wallace, Carter, and maybe a couple more sluggers. Murderer’s Row is coming in a couple of years.

Yes...
In September. The plan is to have Wallace and/or Carter at first in 2010 or 2011 and when they go down with the infamous Oakland A’s quad/oblique/forearm/back strain, Dale will be there to slug 800 in September. Flawless!

Don't get carried away
These guys are still only prospects. They still have to prove themselves in the major leagues. However, I am glad that Wallace is showing some of the power that he showed when he was a Sun Devil, and Carter is just tearing up AA right now.

Hes hitting .353 over his past 10 games so that gonna go up. Close to 400 over past 10 games.
