DLD 8/18/09 - The Day After Signing Day!
You people bore me. Here, have a fresh new DLD to do stuff with please. I had a late, late game last night and am sitting here half dead. ENTERTAIN ME.
Oh, yeah, links. After the jump!
#1 overall pick Stephen Strasburg signed for a record 15.1 Million dollars. Crazy. Will he make a big league start this year?
As reported HERE, the A's signed Green, Krol, and Stassi. Awesome.
Some guy is supposed to sign a contract to play football with some team in Minnesota or something. Frankly, I've never heard of the guy before.
LOL, I don't know why this seems funny to me : The Nationals set a new spending record for a draft. Obviously this is because they gave Strasburg eleventybillion dollars, but still. They had another Top 10 pick (Drew Storen), and the total they spent on bonuses this year was almost $11.2 Million dollars. I wonder how much they're going to have to pay Bryce Harper next year?

There's no way to improve on Poz in responding to this, so I won't try (linked above)
This of course comes up again because it now appears that Raiders coach Tom Cable may have busted the jaw of his own assistant coach Randy Hanson during a staff meeting. At last check, Hanson has not said who on the staff busted his jaw — and Hanson is the same guy suspended by the last head coach Lane Kiffin for mouthing off after a loss to Denver, so there are probably no shortage of candidates. But the suspicion is it was Cable.
And … well, why not? The Raiders have been such a source for comedy fun the last few years that having a coach punch out another coach during a meeting just falls right in line. This, after all, is the team that hired Tom Walsh to be offensive coordinator, this after Walsh had been running a bed and breakfast for six years. I do have to admit that one of my favorite little column asides came during a classic Raiders-Chiefs fiasco back in 2006, when I tried to imagine what was happening in the sideline conversation between the always confused-looking Art Shell, Tom Walsh and the overmatched quarterback Aaron Brooks. The Raiders had the ball on the Chiefs 8 yard line late in the game with a chance to win.
Brooks: "What do we do now?"
Shell: (Inaudible)
Walsh: "You know, I faced a similar situation at the Hansen Guest Ranch bed and breakfast in Swan Valley, Idaho."
Brooks: "What did you do?"
Walsh: "Crullers. People love crullers."
Shell: (Inaudible)
Brooks: "You know, I could just run up to the line and talk to one of the other offensive linemen while the center snaps the ball to nobody."
Walsh: "No, we did that last week. OK, forget crullers. How about we just serve a continental breakfast, you know, a nice assortment of fruit and breads?"
Shell: (Inaudible)
Of course Brooks promptly threw an interception and lost the game.
Ah, memories. The Raiders have gone 24-72 the last six years under the watchful eyes of coaches named Callahan, Turner, Shell, Kiffin and Cable. They have had JaMarcus Russell, Andrew Walter, Josh McCown, Daunte Culpepper, Aaron Brooks, Ronald Curry, Kerry Collins, Marques Tuiasosopo, Rich Gannon and Rick Mirer start games at quarterback over this beautiful period. There have been countless preposterous losses and two books worth of hysterical moments. They were one of two teams that lost to the Kansas City Chiefs last year, and they lost mostly because they tried this jaw-dropping fake-field goal where the plan — the PLAN — was for the holder to snap the ball between his legs to a sprinting Sebastian Janikowski, the Raiders 250-pound kicker. Tom Cable* was coaching then. You wonder if someone wanted to hit him in the jaw.
*Did you know that Tom Cable’s sole head coaching job before he became coach of the Oakland Raiders was as head coach at Idaho? He went 11-35 in four years. After being offensive coordinator at a UCLA team that made it to Las Vegas and Sun bowls, he was hired to be offensive line coach for an Atlanta Falcons team that went 7-9. He then was the Raiders offensive line coach and led the Raiders to the 25th ranked offense. He was then hired as interim and finally permanent head coach. Well, it just makes sense.
Of course, you can’t talk about the Raiders without trying to guess what’s going on in the Al Davis Sanitarium. I love the fact that in late 2007, Al was sitting in his suite with Minnesota’s sportswriter version of Al Davis, Sid Hartman, and Davis said that he did not want to retire until he won TWO more Super Bowls. I just love that. Two more. I mean, what the heck, when you are living in Lala Land, might as well BUY a home rather than rent. We don’t get too many peeks into the Howard Hughes existence of Al Davis, but those peeks we do get tell us that you don’t want to know what’s in those bottles.
That covers my first three points (team, coaches, owner). Mikev’s pictures cover the fourth point. I’m very bitter about the fourth point, not at all about the first three (indeed, they make me happy). As for knowing anything about football, which of us is arguing that 24-72 does not suck?
Be a Raiders fan all you want, just don’t expect a ton of sympathy from non-Raiders A’s fans. Also, accept the current state of your team for what it is.

Everyone hates the Raiders, that's fine.
They have done little to prove they’ll be even a .500 team this year.
But I think they will. Jamarcus is underrated by a lot of people (Black Quarterback stereotype?). They have what could be a devastating offense. Their Run D still is F’d. If they can find a consistent run stuffer, I think they could win the division.

It’s not like this team hasn’t made improvements. Going 5-11 last year with no running backs or fullbacks and that’s clearly the strength of the team. Russell was really good down the stretch last season for a guy just starting for the first time. A 3-3 record isn’t all that, but when five of those six teams were at least .500, you can see where we are and where we’re headed as a young team on the rise.

AN's new mantra?
There are stages to being a fan of bad teams: Anger first, then numbness, then irrational hope, then renewed anger, then realization, then finally this resting place of compromise where fans will either pull back their support or mock their own teams or call for change or simply decide to enjoy the small triumphs.

Is Ivan Rodriguez the best catcher to ever play in a game
Answer in full sentence form with these required vocabulary words:
Yes.
Most definitely.
Yes.
Best Ever.

okay
Even Ivan Rodriguez would have to freely acknowledge that Johny Freaking Bench was yes, most definitely, yes, the best ever at the catcher position, though he would have to reserve judgment about the possibility that Josh Gibson just might have been better than both of them.

Johnny Bench?
Solace: Law says he's a fourth OFer
PaulThomas: I think Keith Law is only a fourth analyst
by hero66 on Aug 18, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bench, yes.
If you want to argue that Piazza or Ivan are top 20 all-time players than that’s how highly you need to estimate them to have them surpass Bench. Bench was the best defensive catcher anyone had ever seen, in an era of running games on fast surfaces he was the stopper and was an elite hitter over his 12 or so years behind the dish.
The eras skew things, and the PED whispers have long been there regarding both Piazza and I-Rod. But what you had with Bench was a catcher who played defense like I-Rod, and hit like Jim Rice, in an era where his numbers aren’t suspect and where shutting down the running game was more of an issue.
by jakarta on Aug 18, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
and I cribbed this from an old BTF discussion
favorite Johnny Bench stat:
in the post-season from 1970-1976, 42 games total, he stole 6 bases and was never caught. If his 7 teammates had been as good, that would be 48 SBs, or more than one per game.
he allowed TWO steals in the 42 games. That is a pace whereby opponents would total 7 stolen bases for a 154-game season. Consdering that they played teams like Philly, Oakland, Pittburgh, NYY, all who ran pretty well, that just astounds me.
by jakarta on Aug 18, 2009 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's the thing
I’m of the belief that if we can’t really quantify catcher’s defense, you can’t definitively say that one was better than the other defensively. Sure, Bench had a much better rep, I’ll give him that, but is that enough for him to overcome Piazza’s offensive edge?
Solace: Law says he's a fourth OFer
PaulThomas: I think Keith Law is only a fourth analyst
by hero66 on Aug 18, 2009 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you assume that catcher defense is totally unmeasurable, the winner is Piazza
If you don’t, but assume that there’s no way to really know degrees of “good” (i.e. where does Pudge rank) or “bad” (i.e. where does Piazza rank), you find yourself looking at hitting stats and just crossing off bad defensive catchers.
Pudge isn’t anywhere near the top of the hitting lists.

Im a big believer in immeasurable and valuable catcher defense
I just can’t prove it yet. Pudge was IMO the best defensive catcher in the game dominated behind the plate for more than a decade and along with being the 22nd best offensive catcher ever, I think that qualifies him for best.
He was one of my favorite non A’s to watch and after Terry Steinbach my favorite catcher growing up. I was a catcher in my playing days and so I always looked up to him.

That's what's so hard about arguing catchers.
If Pudge is far and away the best defensive catcher ever, he might well be the best overall. That, however, is assuming a lot (and purely subjective, other than his strong throws to second).

Seems unlikely to me he would deliberately
give up hits to pad his stats. That’s pretty extreme.
But if knowing certain guys are prone to steal and he could get them out perhaps made him marginally more inclined toward fastballs, that’s understandable. And indeed, if he really could get them out enough so that the numbers worked out in the team’s favor, then that’s a legitimate strategy.

"and the guy who made all the money off it happened to work for the Red Sox,"
who did he just accuse of (lying, cover up, unethical conduct, profiteering) on the report?
Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell released his report in December 2007 and of the 85 players mentioned, none of them were Boston stars. Mitchell has been a director of the Red Sox since 2002.
That pretty ballsy Jack. Your not afraid to talk shit about anyone I see. Has any other ballplayer called out Mitchell so directly? Or any Directors of teams? Those are some pretty big allegations of innuendo.
And did he just call out and cast suspicion all the players from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s with his “you don’t know” comment? More direct innuendo about other ballplayers well before his time.
I think there are going to be more than a few groups of people writing his name on a black list tonight.

By the way, I was not being facetious when I said I like this statement a lot better. I really do like it better.
I don’t hold it against Cust that he used steroids. I don’t especially like it, but like many have pointed out, use was rampant in those days and it was hard not to go along with it, so it’s pretty understandable.
I did hold it against him when he categorically denied it, because even though, no, I couldn’t prove a case against him, I still basically thought that was complete bullshit, and I thought less of him for being either a bald-face liar or in complete denial.
This new tack — careful and cagey, but also with ballsy counterpunches — I think is totally fine.

Bobby Crosby is unlikely to play tonight due to his calf tightness.
Regarding Crosby, manager Bob Geren said, “Today is not the day.”
So here’s the lineup: Kennedy 3B, Davis CF, Suzuki C, Hairston LF, Garciaparra 1B, Ellis 2B, Everidge DH, Sweeney RF, Pennington SS.
Geren said he’d still like to go to a six-man rotation to limit the innings the A’s young starters are throwing; Brett Tomko would be part of it, especially after last night’s outing, and Dallas Braden would complete it when he’s ready to go again in September.

everidge as DH next year?
… Tommy Everidge got his third start of the year at DH today, and I’m thinking he’ll get about 100 or more starts there next year. I just don’t see Jack Cust in green and gold next year, and Everidge probably isn’t good enough on defense to be an everyday first baseman. But as his man-sized home run off Sabathia showed, he’s got Custian pop, and he’s more of a complete hitter. And he’s cheaper. No-brainer.
so now i look to the cust-lovers (i too am a fan of jack cust) to give us a decent comparison of the 2 players. my question is how does that shape our 1B situation? barton as the starter? i’m a little pre-occupied with work right now, so i’m drawing a blank with the full implications of the idea of not re-signing cust. anybody feel like mapping out the possible lineup(s) without him?
also, it sounds like maybe things will turn around with buck. it would be nice to see a solid september from him so we could maybe feel like RF was decided, and part of the decision involved never having to put cust there again, going into 2010.

Yep
It is brilliant. Let’s see what Everidge does for the rest of the season B4 we make judgements. We know Cust won’t get much over .230.
Give the young guys a chance. They know what Cust can do. Now this guy deserves a chance be it at 1st or DH in which case Cust seems to the the one that sits when Everidge DH’s.
by Trainman on Aug 19, 2009 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cust sat against Sabathia
I assume that was because CC is a LH, and Geren wanted to go with as RH a lineup as possible (which still unfortunately had to include Sweeney and AK).
I don’t think it’s a sign of anything more than that.

yes i agree
i wasn’t surprised to see cust on the bench last night based on the matchup. i don’t think last night was an intentional sign of things to come at all.
one thing that got me thinking reading the earlier part of this DLD (after i posted) was the prospect of cust being blackballed by other mlb teams after he spoke out about the mitchell report. i wonder if that would have any impact on oakland’s negotiations with him. like i wonder if beane might be more inclined to keep cust if beane feels cust might not be able to catch on elsewhere due to some blackballing.
anywho, my real concern is 1B (and DH) if we let cust go. PT, you’re good with the numbers and you’re back in the saddle, what do you think? since most people agree that carter won’t be ready for mlb until maybe september 2010 or mid-season at the earliest, who do we plug in?

There really isn't any comparison
Cust’s current ZiPS projection is a wOBA of .364. Everidge doesn’t even HAVE one, but his wOBA so far has been .312 and I doubt any projection would have him much higher.
You’d basically have to be completely off your head acid-tripping insane crazy to start Everidge at DH over Cust.

The team doesn’t want Peavy pitching in a makeup game at Wrigley Field on September 3 due to the risk of injury batting and running the bases, so the current best-case scenario has him returning on September 2 against the Twins. Alternatively, he could make his White Sox debut during the September 4-7 series against the Red Sox in Chicago.
