A's sign Max Stassi for $1.5M

Oakland has signed their fourth round pick, Yuba City high school catcher Max Stassi, for a fourth round record $1.5 million.

Source: http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=1636

No word yet on Green. Do you think we'll be able to sign him? It will probably come down close to the deadline with Boras representing. In regards to Stassi, however, I like the signing. Heard Oakland was offering 1.25 million and Stassi wanted 1.5 million. Glad Oakland made up the difference - wouldn't want to lose that kind of talent for 250k.

I’d be out-and-out shocked if he was sent to a full-season league.

I think the A's will get Green, too.

I like the subtle way the A’s drafts have changed a bit in recent seasons. Specifically in relation to position players. The team is really focusing money and picks on up-the-middle talents. With the scarcity of true up-the-middle athletic talent being exposed at the major league level recently, I think this is a smart idea by the A’s front office.

I'm never gonna do it without the fez on!

I agree

Finding guys like Tommy Everidge and Jeff Gray in the late rounds is pretty easy. No, they won’t carry your team, or even be average players, but they’ll fill out roster spots 16-25 for peanuts.

Having 9 below average guys on the team would kinda suck, wouldn't it?

I mean, unless you’re meaning MLB average in the context of average vs replacment.

Obviously you never want below-replacement players on your team… actually, Everidge has been that bad so far, but it’s a small sample.

not only Dyson

at least according to the Baseball Rumor Mill, which in mid-June remarked about the A’s draft choices:

The(y) grabbed Ian Krol who was booted from his high school team for some off the field issues and is committed to Arizona and will take some money to wrestle free.

and for those who are curious, Kroll was suspended in March from playing in high school for a second violation of the school athletic code of conduct. Apparently he was present where alcohol was being consumed, although no one accused him of drinking.

by mikev on Aug 17, 2009 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Ultimately, it's the player's decision

As an agent, Boras is duty-bound to approve and finalize any deal which his principal asks him to. He might advise against it, even throw a hissy fit about it, but at the end of the day, the player decides. Nobody is forced to NOT sign any contract by Scott Boras.

Also worth keeping in mind that amateur ballplayers do not have a formal agent-client relationship. The agent is, officially, simply an advisor. He doesn’t get a commission from the signing bonus. The reason why agents “advise” like this is because it’s a great way to recruit clients for the future.

Good news,

Andy Seiler has a good draft blog that has information on signings and other related stuff. He also warns to be wary of the source, because there is a lot of unknown.

Don’t pay attention to articles saying that a draftee and a team "are unlikely to agree" before the deadline. Outside writers simply don’t know at this point, and the updates they’re getting are most likely sketchy and not from the most knowledgeable source in the negotiations.

Yea, it could go either way on that one

I mean, what I had read before suggested that the A’s had been negotiating with all three with the intent of signing them all. But you never know how negotiations will progress, I could see a situation where the A’s ran out of room in the budget to get all three and that the signing of Krol suggests they are using money they had budgeted for Green.

At this point I am pretty much done speculating as it could go either way with Green. Time to just cross my fingers and enjoy watching the game tonight.
