DLD 8-17-09: Take BART (boop-boop) if ya wanna be on time
Yes, we have BART service today, and more importantly, tonight for those who can make it to the Coliseum to watch Brett Tomko take on the Yankees. Tomko tonight, Mazzarro tomorrow, Duchscherer....sometime maybe....he has a non-baseball issue. But let's not dwell on the future when we have the past to gloat about!
SuSlu's writeup of yesterday's terrific game includes the quote from Mark Ellis:
Off the bat, I thought it was a double, then I saw (Scott) Podsednik coming over and I thought, 'He's not going to get it."
This astute observation notwithstanding, Craig Breslow is still the smartest man in baseball because he knows about DNA sequencing and stuff.
The Wall Street Journal has a fun story about foreign minor leaguers including the Brazilian-Japanese Fabio Murakami -- what a great name -- in the Phillies organization and the Moanaroa brothers in the Red Sox organization, who are believed to be the first Maori professional ballplayers in the US. No word on whether they do the haka before games.
Y. E. Yang is a great success story. Also, there's now at least one Korean restaurant in Chaska, MN, which is good news for me if I ever have to go visit my relatives there.
"Bonk-Players-In-The-Head-Day" voted less popular than "Turn-Back-The-Clock-Day", but fortunately everyone is okay. Also, the Milwaukee man who decided to get into the spirit of How Thick Is Your Cranium? Day by hitting the mayor in the head with a pipe at the State Fair is in custody.
Your dumps are respectfully solicited below....

Slusser mentioned Nomar could be released today...
to make room for Tomko on the 25-man roster…
and one major-league source told The Chronicle on Sunday that the team was considering releasing Nomar Garciaparra today. According to an A’s source, that is not something the team is considering – at least not yet.
can’t say I’m going to miss Duke and his injury/personal issues…
Justin Duchscherer once again is unavailable with “a nonbaseball-related issue,” according to the A’s, so Brett Tomko will make his Oakland debut tonight.
today’s the last day the A’s can sign Stassi, Kroll, Dyson and Green…
Assistant GM David Forst said, “The deadline will impart some urgency.”
how much does Strasburg sign for?
(Yahoo) expects the Nationals to sign Strasburg for about $20MM

2009: The Year of the Cycle
Yet another player hit for the cycle last week. That makes a total of seven this season, the most we’ve seen in a season since the 30’s. They’ve been coming in bunches, with three in five days in April, then the three since August started.

Reports: Stassi signed
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/08/as-stassi-agree-to-terms.html
2:22pm: Baseball America’s Jim Callis reports that the A’s signed Stassi for $1.5MM, the biggest deal ever for a fourth rounder. The Royals had recently set a new mark for fourth round players, awarding Chris Dwyer $1.45MM a few days ago.
2:15pm: Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus hears that the A’s have agreed to terms with Max Stassi. Baseball America estimates that MLB recommends a $237k bonus for Stassi’s slot, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the fourth round catcher sign for considerably more.

SuSlu's blurb on it.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/athletics/detail?&entry_id=45643
Greg Genske, who has been advising Yuba City High School catcher Max Stassi, tells me that the A’s have signed Stassi, their fourth-round pick.
Stassi will get a signing bonus of $1.5 million; Oakland was aware that Stassi was looking for a first-round type bonus. In fact, that’s the reason Stassi fell so far in the draft – there were concerns he would attend UCLA on a full scholarship if the bonus was not significant.

Wasn't he drafted the same year as Mark Prior?
IIRC the Twins wanted Prior but were afraid they wouldn’t be able to sign him, so they picked Mauer (home-town boy) who they thought would be easier to negotiate with.

Mark Walk-Off HRs Led By Ellis
Jayson Stark reports in his ESPN Insider Three Strikes blog that Mark Ellis now leads all active players named Mark in walk-off HRs with three… and that Mark Teixera has none (yet).
I remember Ellie leading the AL in HRs off left-handed pitching at least late into one season, holding off ARod (who was one behind him). Anyone have more details on that?

Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda feels “lucky to be alive” after being hit in the head with a line drive.
Kuroda has hit on the right side of the head by a ball off the bat of Arizona’s Rusty Ryal on Saturday.
The right-hander wants to return to the mound soon, but admitted that the decision is up to manager Joe Torre.

The Pirates will not call up third baseman Pedro Alvarez this season.
Alvarez will finish the season in Double-A, and Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington prefers not to jump players more than one level at a time.
“We’re a long ways from having another option (to Andy LaRoche) at third base,” Huntington said on his weekly radio show.
Alvarez is hitting .440 with 23 home runs this season.

Tomko is a Zombie
Christina Kahrl’s Transaction Analysis (this may be premium):
I suspect the real lesson here is that when you’re casting about for cast-offs, some bodies keep turning up. Tomko’s latest resurrection is proof that when it comes to zombies, you have to move past asking why or the mysteries of those who might stealthily live among us without fessin’ up, and instead just accept that there’s room in the game for the relentlessly undead as well as the upsided, and always had been. (What, you think Connie Mack didn’t literally dig up the 1915 A’?)
