My extremely analytical sabergeek analysis:

Chris Carter is good at hitting ball very far.

"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

by lenscrafters on Aug 10, 2009 11:35 PM PDT reply actions

you just blew my mind with your analysis.

What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

Hitting ball, period.

.336 is a lot of hitting.

A little bit of me dies inside

every time I see Patterson have a good game – which is like every night – because I know he will never amount to anything in the big leagues. Kind of sad.

You know things are bad when Bobby Crosby doesn't have the lowest batting average of any starter, yet he's hitting .138. Yes, you're 2009 Oakland Athletics.

it really is sad

He absolutely lights up AAA pitching, but major league…

Yeah no comment.

I'm the genius who said Chris Carter will slug .650 his rookie season.

Still don't feel he was given a legit shot

He started about every other game while he was up here sometimes sitting 2 games in a row. Look how well Everidge has done knowing that he’ll be in there every game.

When I compare Everidge to Patterson

I feel that Everidge looks more like comfortable — so far I’ve seen mostly good at bats from him. Patterson looks at times like he is overmatched.

by rightbackin on Aug 11, 2009 2:22 AM PDT up reply actions

So is it all in Patterson's head?

If Patterson believed he could hit in the bigs, could he? Would just being more comfortable make a difference for him? It is hard for me to believe he can hit AAA pitching so well and not hit major league pitching.

by redtopcowboy on Aug 11, 2009 5:01 AM PDT up reply actions

I think in his case it is 99% mental.

Unfortunately he can’t get over that. I don’t think he believes he can hit major league pitching.

Yeah

He needs to go somewhere that badly needs a 2B and to be given several months to prove whether or not he can do it.

Agreed.

Honestly, look at Rajai two months ago. He was overmatched, and had one tool, speed. Around here we were all begging for a DFA, and now look at him. I don’t see why Patterson couldn’t turn out the same way.

Rajai is a little bit different.

He kinda did the same thing in SF in the second half of ’07, hitting .282. Then for the first he started up the next year hitting .056. We will see if Rajai is good, or just riding a hot streak next year. Just my thoughts.

by JamesCaprio on Aug 11, 2009 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions

True,

I guess my point is that Rajai has made adjustments. He looked 100% overmatched the last few years and the beginning of this year, but once he got consistent playing time, he has turned in quality at bats. Whether or not he is actually a productive hitter the rest of his career is irrellavent. The point is consistent playing time allowed him to get comfortable and at least show what he is capable of. Patterson deserves this chance too, especially looking at his minor league numbers.

Fair Enough

If there is a time to give him playing time it is now. We’re not going anywhere in terms of the playoffs, but who do you play him over? Ellis/Kennedy?Hairston actually have futures (hopefully) with the A’s, and Rajai is our best hitter, and Sweeney needs AB’s too.

by JamesCaprio on Aug 11, 2009 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Personally, I say Sweeney.

He has had his chance to prove himself, and has done little more than solitify his spot as a fourth outfielder. I doubt they play Patterson over him unfortunately.

And Rajai's minor league numbers

Aren’t even in the same ballpark as Patterson’s. Like cowboy said above, he has the talent and he just needs an extended look to prove himself. If he gets 2 months of consistent playing time and he still doesn’t produce then I’ll back down but until that happens I will be calling for him to be given another shot.

Miickey Storey

He doesn’t seem to just be a temporary fill-in in Sacto. It appears the A’s are advancing him quickly and for good reason. He just doesn’t walk anybody and that’s going to get you a fast track to the show.

Your team is your child...You love it no matter what.

by TheRaiderWay on Aug 10, 2009 11:56 PM PDT reply actions

I think he is definitely on the radar now

It’s tough to get a feel for relief prospects when you can’t actually watch them throw because the sample sizes are so small but you have to take notice of what Storey has done this year. At first I thought his trip to Sacramento was just as an emergency bullpen filler but it’s starting to look like the A’s are going to give him a real shot.

I don’t know what kind of stuff he has, though scouts have been skeptical of him, but as long as he keeps striking people out and not walking anybody he is going to continue to rise up the A’s long list of bullpen arms.

I have a man crush on Carter

I wasn’t too sure with the K rate, but something has happened this year. Talk about break out season.
