Game 112: A's at Orioles
Oakland Athletics at Baltimore Orioles, Aug 10, 2009 4:05 PM PDT
The Last-Place Tour continues as the last-place A's- fresh off a series victory over the last-place Royals- open up a three-game set with the last-place Orioles.
Isn't August baseball the most?
To say the least.
But the A's keep playing because the schedule tells them to, and we keep watching because we have nothing better to do are true fans. And last-place or not, there are some intriguing subplots to chew on:
- Will the A's continue their mastery over the O's? Eight straight times they've beaten up on their feathered friends, dating back to last season. This includes a three-game sweep back in June, when Oakland outscored Baltimore 21-5.
- Will Jeremy Guthrie get more outs than runs allowed? He failed to do as much on June 5 when the A's roughed him up for six runs in the first, and he was pulled having retired only two batters in what was the Stanford grad's shortest outing of his big-league career.
- Is the Gio Gonzalez we've seen lately the real Gio Gonzalez? Since Minnesota scored 11 runs off him on July 20 , the southpaw has surrendered a total of four runs in 18-2/3 frames, and it's come against some fairly formidable lineups: Boston, New York, and Texas.
- Will Bob Geren's club finally post a winning month? Too early to tell at 5-4, but one thing's for sure: these are not your first-half A's. Since falling to Tampa Bay one month ago today (which coincides with the team's last three-game losing streak), Oakland has gone a respectable 14-13, including eight wins in their last 13 games. And it's not like the schedule has been littered with pushovers; 19 of their 25 games have come against teams with serious playoff aspirations.
The lineups:

Alright, what is up with you Cal people spelling it "Stanfurd"?
It’s not that hard.
If there's this many of us spelling it that way
it’s probably intentional. ;)
There's no crying in baseball!
Oh, I know.
It’s just strange that it’s meant as a pejorative term. Is there something insulting about "u"’s compared to "o"’s?
Probably because it looks close to "turd"
Though “Ford” could be pretty bad anyway.

I guess it's less obvious when it's all-caps, which is what I see quite often.
Incidentally, one of my roommates from this year was responsible for starting the “Cal Sucks” tshirts 4 years ago. I believe Cal students then retaliated with “But Stanford Swallows.”

Last season on Jack Cust bobblehead day, I received two because of an extra ticket. I was going to give one to my brother-in-law (who couldn’t make it), but I overheard a nice couple in front of me talking about how they wish they had arrived earlier because their young son really wanted one. funny story that I have to tell
My sister works with retarded (don’t know the correct term these days) people and trains them on sex education because they often come up pregnant which is not a good thing.
Anyways… her standardized training manual tells her to give them each a condom and a banana so that they can learn to use them properly. After they all passed training someone ended up pregnant and she questioned the woman as to how it happened.
She said “I don’t know. We put the condom on the banana.”

Was it close to being out
it looked that way on gameday, which never, never, ever lies.

is everyone enjoying our warm weather here in the bay area?
i say that as i flip on the air conditioner
Do you guys use window units rather than central air?

I heard about some areas using some sort of water cooler
which always makes me think of my ’62 ragtop VW. They sold these cannisters that kind of go one side of the window but it puts off some nice cool air.

i have central air, but i only turn it on when it gets really hot
i don’t mind the heat that much
Living in the MW I'm always hot
and have to pump some serious a/c during the night in order to sleep.

Lots of Bay Area places -- esp rentals -- don't even have central heat
