How long has it been since we had one of these?

Star-divide

According to FanGraphs, Brad Ziegler throws the second-slowest fastball in the majors among relievers (avg.: 84.2 mph), but he throws it almost as often (78.7% of the time) as Joel Zumaya (80.8% ... whose avg. fastball is 99.4 mph).

The Reds lost by the biggest margin in their team's history last night, 22-1. Shortstop Paul Janish pitched the last inning for the Redlegs, giving up six runs, but striking out Pedro Feliz.

How well do you remember the 80s? (No, I'm not taking this quiz.)

Chronicle presses roll for the last time.

Happy birthday, Jim Gaffigan. Celebrate by having a Hot Pocket.

The Cubs haven't been sold yet, unlike what was said yesterday

This could be huge in terns of a Holliday suitor, since this dictates the Cubs’ payroll flexibility and whether they make any trades.

A rival bidder has emerged or something.

Scott Hairston to be everyday centerfielder

This may have been posted elsewhere, but: Link.

The article says Sweeney will shift over to RF, with Cust getting the occasional start out there. I suppose that means Giambi in the field and Cust at DH more often than not.

by Joey C. on Jul 7, 2009 12:35 PM PDT reply actions

Okay, I like that.

No stats to back it up, but Sweeney looks much more confident in right field than he does in center.

Now, to deal Holliday and bring Buck to play LF every day, DH Cust, make Giambi the hitting coach, and give Barton the everyday 1B job again.

"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."

Now if only Sweeney could hit like a RF…

by MrIncognito on Jul 7, 2009 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

This is my concern

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that moving Sweeney to CF was at least partly motivated by the desire to make his bat more playable. However much power he lacks in center, it’s that much more of a glaring deficiency at a corner spot.

Which sucks, because I irrationally like Sweeney.

Is Hairston's CF defense really superior to Sweeney?

Or rather, is the defensive RF gap between Sweeney and Hairston so great that it necissitates putting Hairston in CF?

Egon has more experience/success (relative term) in long relief?

You coulda dropped Eveland into the long reliever slot, but maybe Geren’s afraid he’d meltdown and we’d have to drain the bullpen.

So, where do I sign???
… Most believable trade rumor regarding the A’s: Matt Holliday and Orlando Cabrera to the Braves for shortstop Yunel Escobar. It makes sense in that it would take care of Oakland’s long-term issue at short — Escobar is 26 and a legitimate stud — and it would save the A’s close to $10 million in salary. But word is that Escobar is something of a problem child, and that might hold up the deal. If it happened, would Buck get another shot in the bigs?

The Orioles are exploring trades involving infielder Oscar Salazar and outfielder Felix Pie.

Both players have garnered interest from other teams, and Baltimore needs to open up a roster spot as shortstop Cesar Izturis comes off the disabled list.

“I think the market would indicate that they have greater value than just a waiver claim,” Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said.

The Toronto Blue Jays released B.J. Ryan today.

Ryan is still owed about $5 million for the remainder of ‘09 and another $10 million for 2010, but the Jays have clearly determined that the former closer has nothing left in his once dangerous arm. The stats back up that conclusion, but it’s still a monstrous salary hit to take, especially when we’re talking about a reliever.

Daniel Bard wut?

Can we stop referring to him as anything more than a relief prospect. Seriously, he’s bordering on most overrated prospect in baseball.

Most of the better relief studs of recent (notable exceptions would be Street, Devine, Lindstrom, and Bell), came through their systems as C+/C level SP prospects and got switched. Papelbon, Soria (he was a starter in the Mexican league when the Royals got him), JP Howell, Bailey, hell even Mariano was a SP prospect once.
