Who do you want to DFA?
Everyone at AN seems to have a favorite player to hate. The A's seem to have a large number of players that could be Designated For Assignment, or outright dumped without much downside. They are all blocking players that are in the teams future from playing time.
The candidates: Bobby Crosby, Jack Hannihan, Rajai Davis, Nomar Garciaparra, Eric Chavez, Jason Giambi, Russ Springer, Santiago Casilla.
Bobby Crosby- FA at end of year, not in A's plans for future. Un-tradeable. .599 OPS. Blocking weak group of AAA middle infeilders from playing time. Upside: plays three positions
Jack Hannihan- has options and is currently in AAA. Un-tradeable. .581 OPS. Blocking 3b from AA from playing time. Upside: good D.
Rajai Davis- four more years of team control. .643 OPS. MIght be tradeable? Blocking other outfeilders from playing time. Upside: speed as PR or late inning replacement D. Upside OPS of .743 in 07.
Nomar Garciaparra- FA and probably retired at end of year. .670 OPS. un-tradable. Not in teams future. Upside: .792 OPS in 08.
Eric Chavez- still owed 15 million for 2010+option 2011. Not in teams future. Upside: we don't do anything and he retires saving us money.
Jason Giambi- .707 OPS. team will probably not pick up option next year, he may retire. Might be tradeable to someone if we picked up salary. Blocking playing time from Barton who we need to see what we have. Upside: OPS .876 in 08. Teacher to the young ones.
Russ Springer- 5.16 ERA. has had some good months. has some trade value with his recent sub 2.32 ERA's the last few years. Not in teams future. Probably going to retire (Oakland: were players go to die) Upside: teacher to the young ones.
Santiago Casilla- 6.52 ERA. and seems to have completly fallen apart. Has had some good not great years for the A's dominante at times. Could use some AAA time if he had more options. 3 more years of team control if he pulls it together. Should have some trade value with. Upside: we sit on him and hope he can figure things out next year.

i pick that one. NONE of these players would start for any other MLB team(Chavvy if healthy but he never is anymore) and not even on 25 roster

Where's Orlando Cabrera?
He’s been just as bad, if not worse, than all of those guys, and he should be removed. And his defense has been awful this year, and that’s supposed to be his strong suit.
My release list goes
1. OCab
2. Giambi
3. Nomar
4. Crosby
All 4 of these guys are MUCH WORSE than Hannahan and Davis, who both actually have had positive value this year.
The only reason Crosby stays over OCab is because he can play more positions, and he’s actually been better than Cabrera this year.
I don’t have an issue with keeping the pitchers (Casilla and Springer) on the 25 man, especially since most of the young pitchers need to be on strict pitch and IP counts and thus having retreads to soak up innings is a good thing. The arms who need to get time will get time.

And Geren bats OCab 1st or 2nd, while Crosby at least is in the bottom of the order.

I didnt include OCab because we apparently where asking too much in a trade to the
Red Sox, so he is for sure tradable if we didn’t ask for much.
What was "too much" though.
I mean, a bag of balls is too much for Barry Zito and his contract.
Orlando Cabrera has negative trade value even if he was making league minimum. He is that bad.

You morph into different bodies.
This year, half of you is in Jason Giambi, and half of you is in Orlando Cabrera.
And Crosby is just Crosby.

29 other teams agree
I love how guys blame a particular management for not playing them enough and then they can’t get a job in the majors the next year.
Is there seriously a better phrasearound than "Designated for assignment" ?
I mean just last weekend, I had to designate a cute co-ed for assignment who just was not pulling her weight in the show.
Of course, this is a two-way road. I found myself DFA’ed not too long ago. Alas, learn it, live it, use it.

I would let almost all of the position players go
I would keep the pitchers though. Your having a losing season anyway. Why waste any service time or risk injury to guys like Bailey? Use Bailey and others sparingly. I would also shut down our young pitchers before the end of the season. AN would go nuts if Cahill, Mazzaro or Anderson hurt their arms after the Allstar Break.

Call up Kilby to replace Springer.
Other than that, the pitching should stay the same.
As for hitting, I’d like to see Everidge and Patterson up for Nomar and Crosby—then the infield would actually have some chance of hitting.

Giambi.
Our defense improves dramatically with his removal—at two positions—and we don’t lose anything at the plate.
