Thread Moves On: A's Up 3-2 After 7
Wonderful effort by Gio Gonzalez today, allowing two runs in six innings of work, while striking out 8. Just enough offense has A's clinging to a 3-2 lead.

So here's my thinking for the 8th/9th
With Hafner and Martinez available, you can’t guarantee Ziggy a group of right-handers to face, and you know that if someone else starts the 8th Bailey will be up as soon as there’s a baserunner. So why not just give Bailey the ball to start the 8th and let him go? He’s well rested.

No, it's not really
Not when he’s on pace to go over 100 innings. It’s easy to say “So what? He started in the minors,” but the training regimens starters and relievers go through aren’t the same. That’s why relievers need to be “stretched out” before starting, so they can build up the ability to pitch a starter’s workload. Starters throw side sessions between their games but relief pitchers have to be ready every day.

Teams condition their closers to throw fewer innings and throw harder in those innings
That’s like training to run a sprint and then running a marathon at sprint speed. You either can’t do it or you fuck something up.

Pitchers are not pussies because they don’t pitch to a standard of yours that is well in the past.

I'm saying nothing more than
any pitcher, reliever or starter, should be in good enough condition to throw a hundred innings a year. That’s it. Is that so hard to get?
by jdub69 on Jul 5, 2009 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And that they're pussies if they can't
Starters? Of course they can go over 100 innings. Relievers? Maybe they can, maybe they can’t, but the way the game is now there’s no NEED for them to and when someone approaches even 80+ innings the opinion is they’re being overused (basically an inning every other game).
This is like a carbon copy of the debate I had with my father over 15 years ago about basketball. He’s 30 years older than I am and he couldn’t watch basketball any more because when he used to follow it any little contact was an automatic foul. All I could do was tell him that’s just not how the game is any more.
You grew up used to seeing relievers used differently than they are today. If that means it’s what you still want and expect even though the game has clearly gone in another direction, I can’t do anything for you.

My beef boils down to conditioning. It is my opinion that these guys are making a lot of money and should be in good enough shape to throw a hundred innings – whether they NEED to or not.

And if you go back through the things you’ve said, it’s VERY clear that’s the way you feel by bringing up Rollie Fingers going 3 innings over 30 years ago and having no trouble with it compared to relief pitchers today and saying if one can’t throw 100 innings he’s a pussy.
What else WOULD you be trying to suggest?
Last of the Ninth - Photography Site / jamesvenes.com - Blog
by Flashfire on Jul 5, 2009 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I do stand by the statement that
all pitchers should be in condition to throw a hundred innings a year. They are professionals not babies.
I have revised the pussy statement to wimps.
Rollie Fingers was brought up by myself simply to reference the fact that it is humanly possible to throw a hundred innings a year as a reliever for a long period of time and not blow your arm out.
Don’ t add anything else to the argument that isn’t there.
by jdub69 on Jul 5, 2009 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
By suggesting pitchers are wimps...
…if they can’t, won’t or don’t pitch with the kind of workload people like Rollie Fingers, Bruce Sutter and so on did, I feel pretty comfortable in criticizing your position and describing it the way I have.
If you recall, this really started out with you saying that since Bailey had worked as a starter before then he’d have no problem pitching a lot of innings as a reliever. The counter to that began with me explaining that based on the roles starters and relievers have, their training regimens and workouts are not the same.
When a relief pitcher is conditioned to throw all he’s got an inning at a time and you want him to go to starting, he’s going to need time to get stretched out or he’s going to have a serious injury because he’s not ready for the additional pitches it requires.
On the other hand, someone who’s used to starting and pitching once every five days, even with side sessions in between you can’t expect him to just go start pitching in game situations every other day or even consecutively. It’s not just a physical change but a mental one as well.

Relievers can handle 100 innings a year IF their teams condition them accordingly
Again. You can’t run a marathon with a sprinter mentality.
A good example to look at would be Carlos Marmol’s 2008 v. his 2009. Marmol had a MAJOR innings jump in 2008, when you factor in playoffs and WBC this year, and he’s totally screwed up this year.

Most relievers don't even get close to 100 APPEARANCES a season, let alone innings
I don’t remember the last time a relief pitcher’s thrown 100+ innings in one year. Marmol was at 87.1 in 2008, to use him as an example.
This is a different era. Closers and relievers normally work one inning, sometimes two max.

We won't overtake the Royals in the overall standings though.
They’re beating the White Sox and knocked the starter out after like 4 innings.
See Chicago, this is why you don’t trade your pitching depth..
Not like that really matters.

I'm afraid to have any of our players get that award.
look at what happens to them
by VV A's fan on Jul 5, 2009 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
what exactly happens?
they set a season records for homeruns? they become the first 40-40 guy in MLB history? Or becoming a very good closer? By “them”, don’t you mean “Crosby”

Ben Grieve….who?
Bobby Crosby, don’t get me started

So we're 4 and 2, as far as having good to great careers
I’ll take those odds. And besides, the award is overrated anyways. It doesn’t guarantee any success, nor does it jinx or curse a player to have a bad career. I’m with you on Croz, though. And I completely forgot that Grieve won it, or rather, I’d forgotten about Grieve completely.

He was MVP as a rookie but not rookie of the year.
by jdub69 on Jul 5, 2009 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
In other words, he was the most valuable player
in the entire league but he wasn’t the best rookie. So who was this rookie, who was better than Vida yet somehow less valuable?

by jdub69 on Jul 5, 2009 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Now my interest has truly been piqued.
The maximum number of IP to be considered a rookie was changed in 1971, from 45 to 50. However, this would not have precluded Vida from winning the award because he pitched 42.0 in ‘69 and 38.2 in ’70. There is also an exception for MLB service time, which was also changed in ’71. My only guess is that Vida’s 2 previous seasons surpassed this mark. I can’t find specific data for how many days he spent on the active roster back then. I can think of no other reason.
