Open Thread: A's at Cleveland - It's Sunday, so it Must Mean...

Oakland Athletics at Cleveland Indians, Jul 5, 2009 10:05 AM PDT

...the A's are trying to avoid the sweep.

As Nico pointed out in last night's recap, it is the seventh time this season (out of thirteen weekends) that the A's have been in this position; they are 2-4 in their previous attempts to elude the broom.

Today it's Gio Gonzalez (0-2) vs. last year's American League Cy Young Award winner, Cliff Lee (4-7), who is coming off a horrific outing (3 innings, 11 hits, 7 earned runs against the White Sox). It was the first time in 48 starts that he did not last at least five innings.

It's tough, but the A's simply need Jack Cust's defense out there

so that’s just kind of the way it goes.

Wouldn’t Zook be a better outfielder than Cust?

I knew it was gonna be a long year...

when before the season Beane announced he wasn’t going after any pitchers. No team is gonna win with 4 rookie starters and a 2nd year guy. No offense to those guys, they’ll be good and all but that’s asking too much.

Yeah, that too.

As long as their arms don’t get blown out, namely Anderson/Cahill though.

This team is decent with Barton, Buck, Everidge, and Patterson over Giambi, Nomar, Davis, and Crosby though.

bailey what a turnaround

this time last yr he was struggling in AA, made a switch to bullpen. dominated those last few months, dominated the AFL and during spring. A bullpen spot opened only due to devine’s TJ surgery.
If he didnt switch to reliever he wouldve been a 25 yr old pitcher repeating AA and off the prospect radar.

Braden is a top 10 pitcher in the AL.

And Zooks is easily the #3 catcher in the AL, behind, albeit considerably, only Mauer and VMart.

Although in terms of full time catcher, since Vmart can’t play C full time and has to play 1B/DH once in a while, Zooks will give you many many more starts at C.

Braden >>>>>> 4 of the pitchers on that list.

The AL team will burn out its two catchers and its starting pitchers early. That’s going to be fun in extras.

And both teams have 2 catchers. Interesting.

Kind of like how I want Buck playing RF no matter who's on the mound, lefty or righty

If he’s bad against lefties (which he has been this year, though in his career he’s slightly better than he is against righties), how is he going to get better unless he faces them more? It’s not like they’re risking the division by giving him a few more opportunities.

Pulling Gonzalez

I’m fine with it. The A’s may lose the game (wouldn’t surpise me at all), but I like the fact that Gonzalez goes into the break on a high note, having pitched well and not fallen apart after the home run.

With a pitcher who seems emotionally fragile, sometimes it’s best not to push it.

by bear88 on Jul 5, 2009 12:16 PM PDT reply actions

Regardless of the outcome, I agree with taking Gonzalez out after 6

He needed a positive start and got one, leaving with the lead. He threw 61.5% of his pitches for strikes, which is a little low, but he kept himself from giving up a bunch of walks and got out of most of his jams. Letting him build on this is better than sending him out for the 7th and risking allowing a couple runs to end on a negative note.

Yeah I'm fine with it too actually

Thinking it through more, Hafner and Martinez were going to be saved for the 9th (same part of the order) and Wuertz was the right guy for that group; plus letting Gio close out 6 strong today, rather than maybe being pulled in the middle of the 7th, made sense.
