Open Trade Deadline Thread
EDIT: OCab is gone! The Twins have acquired OCab for SS prospect Tyler Ladenorf: LINK
Rated-R Superstar summed up the OCab-Twins talk here. Pretty much, the two sides are making progress and its somewhat likely OCab is a Twin. And Ron Gardenhire likes O-Cab. I just thought putting all the trade deadline stuff in one place, since today is one of the most important non-playoff days of the season (the draft days are the other). Post updates, etc, here. Packaging OCab with Springer to get more prospects from the Twins, since they do need bullpen help, might be wise.
Re: Springer/Cardinals: It's unlikely:
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak downplayed the possibility of acquiring relief help before today's 3 p.m. waiver deadline.
The Cardinals remain interested in set-up relief help but may find a match after today.
"I don't see anything happening in the near term," Mozeliak said.
"There is a possibility something may come along after (today), but there is also a significant chance that nothing happens."
Other thoughts:
- Getting the Twins to overpay for OCab would be nice and pleasant.
- Springer and/or one of Wuertz/Ziegler might also be traded, as many others know. Obviously, Wuertz or Ziegler should only be moved if the price is right, and by no means should both be moved, but if someone offers a top 3B/SS prospect, do it. Springer is a solid reliever and an impending FA who's likely to accept arbitration if offered, so if the A's aren't planning on forking 3MM over for a middling reliever (which they shouldn't), trying to trade Springer would be smart. But then, he does have leadership qualities and I'd rather Geren NOT get any more excuses to blow out the arms of Bailey and Wuertz (if he stays). Having Springer to soak up innings with how young and Verducci-risky the rotation is.
- Halladay hopefully is a Ranger. Now, before I get lambasted for wanting the Rangers to seriously upgrade their team and reel in arguably the best pitcher in baseball, I'm getting a kick out of the idea of breaking up the Rangers' big four and one, most likely two, of the Smoak/Perez/Feliz/Holland crew going to Toronto, namely Smoak (hell, Smoak + a bunch of Texas's non top 3 guys will be good). The Rangers probably won't extend him, as Doc has expressed desire to try the FA market and the Yanks/Red Sux/Mets/Dodgers are lurking there to pry the Doc away or at least jack up his price. I know he's a prospect and could very easily be a bust, but not having to deal with (a really cheap) Smoak in 2011 if he hits his ceiling and 5 other years will make it easier for the A's to win a few division titles in those years. Oh, and maybe some payroll issues that might lead to the Rangers not signing Purke/Scheppers, who are massively overslot draft picks. I don't dislike the Rangers and really really want them to win the West or at least take the WC away from the Yanks/Red Sox. But Smoak out of the AL West is a good thing as far as prospects go.Deal with Doc in 2010, since 2009 is kinda done in terms of playoffs for the GNG. Oh, and I'd infinitely more like the Rangers to win the West this year than those pesky slegnA and their stupid rally monkeys.
- Oh. There's also talk about Victor Martinez, Adrian Gonzalez, and a bunch of other guys. Maybe one of those two going to Boston, since Papi's showing off that he's done.
- Anything else? Trade predictions? Post away!

Predictions:
Halladay will not be moved. Adrian Gonzales will not be moved. O-Cab will not be moved. Victor Martinez will not be moved.
All moves, if any, today will be relatively minor and won’t include the A’s.
The best shot for an A’s trade would be Springer, who is basically worthless.
No one will meet JP’s asking price for Halladay or Towers’s price for Gonzalez. The Twins do not trade their top prospects… they just don’t. So unless Beane takes a fringe prospect, this trade won’t happen. I just don’t think Victor Martinez is as good as everyone thinks. Boston would never trade a top pitching prospect for him.

OCab trade
I don’t think anyone expects a top prospect for Cabrera. Maybe if we add in a reliever (preferably Springer, from the A’s point of view), then we could get a package of something like one low risk, low ceiling player plus one younger lottery ticket.
never mind
I guess some people do think that we can get a good prospect for OCab.
Valencia would be nice, but I’m a little concerned about how he can’t take a walk in AAA so far. I like the power, though.
Well
Should the Twins make this deal? Obviously Valencia is potentially too much and may want to reconsider if they are indeed going this route. But it seems as though every year when the deadline approaches some teams lock themselves on a player and will do whatever it takes to get them. Let’s hope this does occur for the A’s sake. Hey, who’s to say O-Cab doesn’t turn around in the off-season and re-sign with Oakland.
If JP can somehow get Smoak and Holland in the deal for Halladay...
He should be happy with a bag of new baseballs as the 3rd part of the package!

1. Jack Zduriencik is smart.

3. He’s focusing on the 2010 team.
I realize it’s confusing to see a smart GM in Seattle, after all those years of Bavasi and Gillick, but there it is.

It was just a little confusing as to why they would
trade prospects for a need position and then trade away a starter. They are still very much in the playoff picture this year.
I thought the Mariners should’ve been sellers all along. They can’t catch anybody for a playoff spot. I was a little surprised they went out and grabbed Wilson and Snell despite putting Washburn’s name out there.

Wilson and Snell are both for 2010
I don’t think Z expects to make the playoffs this year. They’ll still try, of course, but he’s not going to turn down trades over it.
He does expect to be good next year, though, so he’s looking for short-term future and willing to give up long-term future to get it.
Clement wasn’t working out in Seattle and needed a change of scenery. Washburn is a free agent at the end of the year. Cedeño was awful. The other guys are further in the future. He’s basically given up nothing that would be useful for 2010.

Presumably Pennington comes to Oakland, and they have to fill upwards, more or less, throughout the org (unless they just give the SS job to Petit). Still, they need to make room, and that’s the obvious way to do it.
On Greene — does it change much? They’d obviously make room for him when he signs, and having two talented SS prospects low in the minors is a good idea.

Sickle's Note on Ladendorf a while ago....
A second round pick out of Howard JC in 2008, Twins prospect Tyler Ladendorf was a major disappointment in rookie ball, hitting just .204/.308/.293 for the GCL Twins last summer. He did steal six bases in six attempts and flash the tools to remain at shortstop, but he didn’t nearly hit as well as expected after a superstar spring campaign. So far, 2009 has been different. He’s 8-for-19 (.421) with a double and two homers in his first six games for the Elizabethton Twins, with six walks and just one strikeout. Yes, yes, small sample size. This could turn on a dime. But he’s already exceeded his home run output from last year, and is controlling the strike zone extremely well. My guess is that he’ll continue to play very well in the Appy League and move up to Beloit in August, at which time we’ll get a better read on how much progress is for real.

Some more info about Ladendorf on Scout.com....
Batting and Power. Though he will tell you that power is his weakest attribute, Ladendorf has the potential to be a 15-20 home run guy. He has a sweet stroke from the right side, and should hit for a fairly high average. He had to make the adjustment to professional pitching in 2008, though he was used to using the wooden bats, and he should be able to raise his average at least 80 clicks in 2009. He looks to be a doubles guy in the future, with the ability to knock a few out of the park.
Baserunning and Speed. Ladendorf is a tremendous athlete, who credits his athletic ability as his best attribute. He is a burner on the basepaths, after stealing a combined 37 bases in 2008. He will likely be a 20 steals guy, and is an above average baserunner for someone his age. This is definitely one of his strengths.
Defense. Ladendorf hopes to stay at shortstop, and he will if he does not get to big. He makes some very tough plays look routine at shortstop, and is quite fun to watch play the position. He also has a tremendous arm, and good range at the position. He could possibly play any position on the diamond, not including catcher, but the Twins drafted him as a shortstop, and plan to keep him there.
ETA. 2012. Ladendorf is a very interesting prospect, as he has drawn rave reviews since being drafted by the team. The team spent a high draft pick on the flashy shortstop, and have high hopes for him in the middle of the infield. He should be slated for Beloit in 2009, and possibly called up to Fort Myers. The Twins have a shortage of middle infield prospects, and Ladendorf is entering the system at the right time.

Just because he won't be ready until 2012 doesnt meant we cant compete until then
First of all, its hardly a sure thing he is the answer to our shortstop woes. Second, its always good to stockpile a farm system with talent, to continually stream the major league team talent and to provide depth. The Ladendorf move should provide us with middle infield depth.

Jon Heyman reports the Red Sox are still talking with the Padres about acquiring slugger Adrian Gonzalez.
Clay Buccholz, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson are all involved in the deal. The Padres are also asking for Ryan Westmoreland and Lars Anderson. It’s a massive price, but the Red Sox knew what they were getting into when they first struck up discussions for the 27-year-old Gonzalez.
One wonders, though, what Boston would do with the newly acquired Adam LaRoche.

The report has been confirmed by Ed Price. Martinez is owed about $2 million for the rest of this season and carries a $7 million club option for 2010. He’s batting .284 with 15 home runs and 67 RBI in 377 at-bats for Cleveland.
Martinez has logged 52 games behind the plate and another 47 at first base.

In the same way that 6 people (Youkilis, LaRoche, Lowell, Ortiz, Varitek, Martinez) of starter ability to play 1B/3B/C gives you great flexibility. If they get to the WS, there are going to be some really unhappy starters.
When the Yankees called the Mariners about pitcher Jarrod Washburn, Seattle asked for either outfielder Austin Jackson or catcher Miguel Montero.

Here is a follow-up on the Adrian Gonzalez rumor.
The Dodgers are reportedly making a late run at Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and reliever Heath Bell.
Major league sources claim that the Dodgers could acquire the players in separate deals or a multi-player blockbuster.
It is believed that Los Angeles would include first baseman James Loney in a deal with San Diego if Gonzalez is involved.

Alright, I'm clearly missing something.
But what’s the big deal with trading in-division, if that’s where you’re going to get the best haul?
Because you're also making your main rivals better.
You play them more than any other teams, so you’d have a tougher time. It’s kind of a wash too.
I understand trading within the division if you’re giving them a short-term solution in your own down season and getting some long-term answers for yourself, however.
If you trade outside of your division, however, you get better and your main rivals don’t.

Well, if you're confident enough you're selling a lemon, why would it matter?
I mean, to take an (unreasonable and impossible) example that would never happen, I would love to trade BroCro to the Angels for a bag of baseballs.
But seriously, if you think you’re fleecing them, it just doesn’t make sense to me why it would matter.
even if you think you're fleecing them
you could be giving your rival the next Carlos Pena/Nelson Cruz.

I think those are poor examples, given that they didn't succeed with the team that we handed them off to.
But I see your point. It just seems like one of those things like guarding the lines in a late-and-close situation as opposed to playing straight up; it’s kind of a wash. It doesn’t make sense to me that it’s that taboo.
they were the first to come to mind
I should have used “a late bloomer” or something like that.

You don't go into every trade trying to 'pull one over' on the other guy.
That will whittle away your trading partners very quick.
The idea is to make both your clubs better, i.e. dealing away surplus and filling weaknesses.
Add this to what I said above, and that’s why you usually don’t like to trade within your division.
by LoneStranger on Jul 31, 2009 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions
If you happen to be wrong and the guy you sent blows up
or the guy you got gets injured, you have to hear it from both sets of fans for a long, long time. Every win the guy you traded away helps get, and very loss the guy you got didn’t matter, hurts you double. It’s one thing to think your getting the better end of a trade. Its another if your wrong and have to look up because of it.
You don’t want daily reminders of past trades not working out.
"Gratuitous gesticulating together sounds even better"
You almost never think you're selling a lemon.
The idea behind almost any trade is that both teams benefit, so it’s a net gain for those two teams against the other 28.
Doing that with a distant team is better than doing that with a division rival. If you have two offers that are roughly equal, that gives an edge to the non-division candidate.
But if one deal is better, you still take the best deal; and if the division deal is the only one available, it’s still better than no deal at all.

can we trade them Cust?
The fact that the Tigers didn’t have to give up a lot for Jarrod Washburn, and didn’t have to give up highly-rated prospects, means they’re still talking with teams about beefing up their offense before today’s nonwaiver trade deadline. Foxsports.com reported the Tigers have continued to talk with the Orioles about Luke Scott. They’re also believed to be checking around with other clubs to see if asking prices go down on other outfield/DH types before the deadline.

I was thinking earlier in the week that Jack Cust would be a good fit for the Tigers. Other than him, their best option is using Michael Thames at designated hitter. Cust, hitting from the different side of the plate, would at least provide an alternate.
Maybe if we toss in Springer, we can get something decent in return.

Well at least today
We found who the awful GM’s are.
Kenny Williams, Walt Jocketty, Frank Wren.
The good ones? Jack Z. , Neal Huntington, and Mark Shapiro looks like he did a decent job.
"I feel like we are sending Danny Haren for Mulder all over again." - Cardinal fan on the Matt Holliday trade
"But at this time of year, two plus two doesn't always add up to eight. Sometimes, it equals four." - Geoff Baker, Mariners beat writer.
Looking at the whole last month or so, Mark Shapiro didn't do a decent job IMO
He could very easily have gotten more for Lee and VMart, especially Lee. Reeks of desperation. Easily. Although I like the DeRosa trades.
And Mozeliak kinda looked err…interesting. Jury’s way out on him. You just traded most of your best prospects in 2 deals to improve the offense. Nice set of win now moves. Your manager, despite the fact that he’s a really good manager, really isn’t putting the best lineup on the field primarily. Your best players need to be starting in a pennant race.
Kenny Williams wins the Double Facepalm. The worst use of 6 pitching prospects I can imagine over the last two years/4 major trades. Especially since 3 were top 50-75 (maybe even better) prospects when traded, and the 4th was a league average BOR starter. I’m sorry, but that’s the 4th straight major bad trade ( both Swisher trades, and then Vazquez, although jury is somewhat out on Swisher #1 for the A’s, Swisher #2 makes both Swisher trades absolute epic fails on KW’s part).
Oh. Sabean is just a fucking moron. Period.
Neal Huntington looks really good.
"I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it" ~ Mae West
What a stupid and lazy assessment
But these types of things written about KW are really quite funny, considering his results. Oh and your opinion is wrong. The White Sox are not the A’s. They don’t have to operate their franchise like a bottom feeder in terms of revenue. Give me a break.
"Oh well back to work"
KW has been over-rated for years, him and his yapping dog of a manager wouldnt know how to build a good baseball team if it fell on their heads, which luckily for them, it did in 2005 when every single pitcher they had managed to pull off a career year. Of course they say the Posednik was the whole reason why they won, smh. They arent going to win again unless they have 12 pitchers simultaneously have career years again.
Who is they?
Again what kind of silly analysis is that. And over rated by whom? You retards have been saying the same stuff for years somehow tossing out the White Sox’s results and the position they are in for the next 3 years. Care to wager who reaches the promise land again first? I respect the hell out of Billy Beane. Its his wanna bees without an ounce of objectivity or sense that irritate the hell out of folks.
"Oh well back to work"
They = Ozzie and KW, who are also both complete clowns and terrible at their jobs.
White Sox arent going anywhere while they are running the show. Oakland will win a WS before the White Sox, easily. With the Peavy trade they now have one of the worst farm systems going, and the offense is looking pretty putrid going forward. The Tigers have that division locked down going forward.
Lol
I don’t know why I thought the quality would be better around here. I am going to take it you don’t represent the norm (i hope not)
1) The have already gone somewhere while they ran the show, including a division title last year
2) The Peavy trade took 1 upper tier prospect and back end rotation guy for a 4-5 WAR pitcher for the next 3-4 years
3) Quentin and Beckham have no future (lol again)
4) Buehrle, Peavy Floyd and Danks hmmm.
5) Actually the White Sox farm system is in the best shape its ever been in
6) Unfortunately not a lot of folks (including the lastest BP projections agree with you about the Tigers)
"Oh well back to work"
I may be delusional but I notice you couldn't dispute one thing I said.
Either way I’m finished arguing with you. More than happy to talk to someone who is not clueless.
"Oh well back to work"
