Report: Athletics, Twins Agree to Cabrera Deal

                                                   756-rpascabrerarun
Minnesota is the veteran shortstop's sixth different team in his 13-year career. [via media.sacbee.com]

The Oakland Athletics were making steady progress late Thursday night toward a deal that would send veteran shortstop Orlando Cabrera to the Minnesota Twins, a source told ESPN.

Star-divide

The Twins have been looking for infield help of late, having spoken with the Pirates about Freddy Sanchez. Cabrera is hitting .280 with four homers and 41 RBI, and he's batted .377 in the month of July. Cabrera, 34, is signed to a one-year deal, $4 million.

I guess this would mean that Cliff Pennington is coming up to Oakland from Triple-A Sacramento.

***UPDATE*** -- 10:29 a.m.

Susan Slusser and Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports have confirmed that the deal is done.

*UPDATE*This deal appears to be completed and I believe that Cabrera has been informed already. I have not had this confirmed, but according to FanHouse's Jeff Fletcher, the A's will receive minor-league shortstop Tyler Ladendorf.

An A's source tells me that a deal is "very close." Despite a report on ESPN in the past 20 minutes, there is no need for any OK from the commissioner's office.

Here are some links on shortstop Tyler Ladendorf:

I'm torn about the possibility of trading Cabrera.

I mean, if he’s going to walk at the end of the year, then of course you try to get something of value out of him. On the other hand, the A’s don’t really have anyone to replace him. I guess it boils down to whether or not the A’s think he would resign for another year or two after this season.
From what’s been said here on AN, the guy seems to like playing in Oakland. And let’s be honest, how many players could you actually say that about? So I guess that makes the possibility of trading him just kinda ‘bleh’ for me.

by AEP2007 on Jul 31, 2009 2:01 AM PDT reply actions

he can always come back next year

i wouldn’t mind him on another one year deal to be honest. he’s not the worst player in the world.

I agree.

I guess it would depend on how he feels about the A’s trading him.

If he gets in a pennant race.......

I don’t see him being unhappy. What’s a few months in a new city for a shot at a title? Totally worth it thats what!

Cabrera

He has had an awesome 2nd Half of the Season. During the 1st 80 Games (or so), his fielding was horrid and his hitting was too. Not so much now. Personally, Cabrera has grown on me.

by Colorado Fan on Jul 31, 2009 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions

I say trade him.

Everyone happens to forget that he absolutely, positively sucked for the first 3 months of the season…And his defense, his #1 asset, is declining. He might be a class act, but I don’t think his on the field performance has warranted keeping him.

keep OCab

I am pleased with Cabrera’s play, positive attitude and impact on the local community as he has been in the forefront of helping others so why trade someone who wants to return to Oakland? Why not try and resign him now for a two-year deal, citing the satisfaction of his play and impact? I trust in management’s decisions, but I think the team can be better served by keeping OCab.

by jaylans on Jul 31, 2009 4:02 AM PDT reply actions

I like him

And have since 2004.

He has been durable and consistent for years. Even during his below average first half – and he wasn’t the only one on this team who stunk – he was still an upgrade over Crosby.

Of course, at his age you never know when the decline will irreversibly kick in, so he’s likely to get only a two year contract with club option for a third year.

I notice none of the rumors mention which players/prospects the Twins might give up. Hopefully Beane insists on some real value, since there’s really no need to dump Cabrera.

by OaklandSi on Jul 31, 2009 5:41 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Exactly

There’s no way to tell if it’s a good idea to trade him without an idea of what the return is. It won’t hurt us to keep him, but if we can get good value, we should definitely be open to a trade.

by yarky1 on Jul 31, 2009 7:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Why sign him?

I don’t understand why so many people think we should keep Cabrera. The A’s are not winning this season — period. So why not save the money left on his contract, put that money toward signing a couple high-priced draft picks, and get a prospect from another team. If he’s so great, sign him in the offseason. Of course, it’ll take another $5M to get him, and he’s basically average or below at this point, so doing that’s pretty much another waste of money.

by rageon on Jul 31, 2009 6:21 AM PDT reply actions

I say keep Cabrera.

I’m kind of over this trend of crossing our fingers hoping for a superstar prospect. If we have someone proven, healthy, and good, and likes it here, why give him up? I think its so funny that he had 3 bad months, and everyone is hopping on that rather than his 11-12 year career. Since when is a slump a sure sign of a guy getting worse? He’s already back to his career avg. and his defense has been much better.

by sox1844 on Jul 31, 2009 9:48 AM PDT up reply actions

His defense sucks and will only get worse...

he’s been hitting well lately, but my feeling is that it’s most likely just a hot streak, not a sustained improvement in his hitting.

He’s just not that good. I say trade him and don’t consider signing him next year. Pennington will be much cheaper and probably just as good.

They are feeling pressure from the players this year.

Earlier this week, some Twins players had publicly called for the front office to make moves to augment Minnesota’s playoff chances.

My main perspective on Cabrera

is that he still has value in 2010, as a good singles hitter with defensive acumen — but that he should probably shift over to 2B. A team looking for a good veteran starting 2Bman should consider signing him; unfortunately the A’s aren’t that team.

A's want Danny Valencia

According to the Star Tribune, Danny Valencia’s name has been brought up in trade talk with the A’s. He’s a top 5 prospect for MN, and a third baseman, which of course is a huge area of need for us. (And he’s currently hitting over .300 in AAA Rochester.) It would probably require more than just Cabrera, but it would be a nice move for the A’s s it would solve both third base and first base (Wallace moves there) for next season.

I'd give them Ziggy and Cabrera for Valencia...

It would give the A’s a starting 3B next year and would allow Wallace to become the starting 1B next year.

I don’t think the Twins would accept anything less.

A deal may not be as close as originally thought.

http://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/neal/2009/07/31/deadline-day-update/

Valencia straight up for Cabrera is asking for too much IMO. I still think a deal will get done, but we probably won’t be seeing Valencia’s name on the rivercats roster any time soon unless Beane sweetens the deal. Smith is pressured to make a deal after his lack of activity in recent years so maybe he’ll give in to Beane’s demands.

It's done.

12:08pm: Yahoo’s Tim Brown said it was a done deal, with the Twins sending Tyler Ladenorf to Oakland for Cabrera, but then quickly told me it’s not done yet.

11:56am: Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says Cabrera to the Twins is “very close.” Slusser says Valencia is not part of the deal.

by LoneStranger on Jul 31, 2009 10:11 AM PDT reply actions

They add an update to 12:08...

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, via Twitter, says it’s done.

Cabrera, 34, is hitting .280/.318/.365 on the season in 448 plate appearances. He has $1.75MM remaining on his contract, once you factor in a $250K bonus for being dealt. Though he profiles as a Type A free agent after the season, Cabrera’s agent wisely negotiated a clause disallowing his club to offer arbitration. So, no draft picks for the team for the loss and no impediment to signing Cabrera from the player’s point of view.

Seems like an ok

but not great return for Cabrera. Didn’t expect to get too much, but a 21 year old struggling in low A ball doesn’t exactly thrill me. SSS in low A I know, but I think I would have rather seen Beane go after an arm.

JUCO SS, 2nd round pick last year. Good glove, good pop, good eye. Poor performance last year in rookie ball, but he was promoted out of the league this year (to A ball) after a great 70 at-bats.

I was actually starting to like O-Cab, he is always smiling and having fun.

But I guess there isn’t much point in having him on the team now. How much money will the A’s save in this deal? I can’t be more than a million right? (wouldn’t it be awesome if you could somehow save $1 million dollars by making a trade in your personal life?)
