A's demands for Holiday
It has been reported by Jayson Stark that the A's will want "two prospects with an tremendous upside" for Matt Holiday if they deal him. It's unclear how much of the $6.75MM remaining on his contract the A's would pick up.
It is also been thought that any trade dealings for high priced players will include the selling team picking up part of salary. Also, prospects or low priced players with an upside will be hard to come by due to the current economic conditions.
What are your thoughts about the chances that the A's will get two prospects with tremendous upside? Will the A's scale back their demands? Will the A's pick up part of Holiday's remaining salary? Will the A's trade Holiday or take additional draft picks?

Let him walk
With the way Holliday is playing and his pending FA, I doubt we will get anything that will wow us, probably a couple of midlevel prospects.. I say let him walk after this year and get the 2 draft picks

As every day goes by and every BS performance from Holliday goes by...
I’d take a page from the movie Little Big League. There was a Twins pitcher that wasn’t trying and kept talking about the big payday he’d get when he became a free agent. The boy manager said he’d keep running him out there every 5th day and the pitcher said he wouldn’t try so the manager asked the assistant coach who was sitting right there something like “what’s the going rate for a pitcher who can’t get anyone out?”
Holliday isn’t just screwing his trade value, he’s screwing his worth on the free agent market. If he hates playing in Oakland so much, he should be putting in double time to improve his numbers so Beane ships him out. With every groundout, he’s just increasing the chances that the A’s just keep him.
I don’t think Billy would take to high-upside single A players for Holliday. At least he better not.
The players he should be asking for should be no longer than 2011 away from being in the bigs.

I'm pretty sure liking or hating Oakland has nothing to do with the way he's playing
If anything, trying too hard to put up the numbers is going to make him more likely NOT to put them up.

Thank you
Im really tired of the “if they only tried harder meme” sometimes you just suck, sometimes you get bad luck, shit happens but to believe that if something isn’t going well it is because the players/GM don’t care or aren’t trying is illogical and if I was a player I would find it offensive.

The interesting thing about Holliday
is that his plate approach isn’t more or less different than it was in previous years. From his plate discipline data, we can see that he’s not swinging at more pitches out of the zone (23.8% 09, 25.0% career), in the zone (74.0% 09, 78.2% career), and he’s actually making more contact than his career average (80.3% to 77.9%). And if you look up this data on fangraphs (and save me the trouble of listing all of it!), you can see he’s pretty much doing the same thing he’s always done across the board, which to me, indicates he’s not “pressing” or not trying hard enough, etc.
The thing is though, his line drive percentage is lower this year than it has been at any other year (15.0% to 19.9% career). Of course, this means he’s hitting less line drives and more infield flies, etc. Basically, he’s just plain not hitting the ball as hard as he used to. And oh yeah, his HR/FB is 9.1% which is drastically different from his career average of 16.7% and far lower than what he’s put up in previous years.
So what conclusions can we draw from this? Well unless we want to dwell into conspiracy theories about Holliday not caring (and, I guess, subsequently deciding not to hit the ball hard anymore, which is pretty ludicrous considering the guy is on the verge of his career defining contract), I think it’s two pretty obvious reasons most people have already figured out. One, the switch in leagues has caused Holliday to be exposed to many unfamiliar pitchers and pitching styles, so he’s having problems guessing right and squaring up a pitch and hitting it hard. And two, park factors are really affecting his power as evidenced by the extreme drop in HR rate.
The good news for Holliday is that both of these problems are easily correctable. To correct problem one, he just needs more time in the AL. To correct problem two, he just needs to get the hell away from Oakland. And as for the bad news, I think you already figured it out. He’ll probably already be traded by the time he corrects problem one and of course, problem two speaks for itself.

Hmm, not sure
I know that data isn’t available on fangraphs (and if it isn’t on there, you’d be hard pressed to find it anywhere else). I remember an old post by PT citing that the league median is around 10%….ah here it is.
I do know that generally an elite rate is over 25% (off the top of my head, Howard and Cust meet this standard, although I think Howard has put up numbers far above that) while “very good” is 20%+, and “very bad” is ~5%. Meh, it’d be a very safe bet to say that league average is around 10-12%.

I think problem #1 is the far bigger problem.
He has way too much raw power for Oakland to cost him a lot of homers, when he’s squaring up the ball.
Interestingly enough, it’s looking more and more likely to me that he won’t be getting away from Oakland anytime soon, because he’s going to be offered arbitration, and unless he really picks it up in the second half, it might be a better proposition for him than the contracts he’s going to be offered.

With Boras as his agent, he will not accept arbitration, especially from the A's.
He wants to play for a winning team.
So if he does not get traded this month the A’s will offer Arb and he will not accept. All teams in MLB know that he is just having a down year, but that he is a great player both defensively and offensively.
I actually think he will get traded, but not for less than what Beane wants.

Since when did a
“winning team” factor into any of Boras’ signings? Unless, of course, by winning team you mean the one that pony’s up the most cash.

Technically yes, but don't try to pretend that Boras hos no influence.
Boras has HUGE influence, and most players hire him and take his direction pretty much unquestioned for a reason.

yeah
Several beat reporters have mentioned that Holliday is wound up tighter than a top. I’m sure he doesn’t want to ruin his FA value or prove the critics right that he’s a “Coors Field only” star.
Interestingly, if Beane decides that none of the trade offers are worthwhile, he’ll have to offer arby to Holliday in order to get the draft picks — and of course, Holliday would have to decline arby.
by OaklandSi on Jul 4, 2009 6:58 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think it's a slam dunk that Holliday would decline though
I couldn’t see Holliday wanting to spend another year in Oakland. If he’s really willing on a one-year, “rebuild my value” contract, he sure as heck wouldn’t want to do it in the offensive purgatory that is Oakland Coliseum again.
I can’t imagine that he’s having a lot of fun this year.

If someone offers two players with tremendous upside
I have no doubt that the A’s will pick up the remaining salary. Granted it’ll all come down to the deal as a whole, but that won’t break any deal, only the return will. Having said that, i’m guessing we’re getting the picks unless some team gets really desperate at the deadline.

(ex. Kendrick, Aybar, Izturis, S.Rodriguez, Wood, etc.) in a deal for Haren, he should be fired immediately. Seriously.

Holliday
My honest to Pete feelings on this right now are, why trade him? The A’s don’t need to trade him. Chances of getting someone who will make an impact at the big league level next season are not so great.
Are the A’s going to get better prospects than Chris Carter, Cardenas, Weeks, etc? Anyone closer to the big leagues at a position of need? If the answer isn’t yes, and I don’t see so many signs to point that the answer is yes, why trade him?
It is the teams looking for a power bat that have a need. If their need isn’t big enough to deal what the A’s need… near major league ready hitters, take the picks next year

Why?
there is so much more control over prospects who have already entered professional baseball. By A+ (which is still two years away from the show) you already know so much more about a prospects potential success or failure. Matt Dominguez for example was widely viewed as a top 15 pick (so we wouldn’t have gotten him anyway) and legit impact 3bmen both with the bat and glove in the 2007 draft… Oh btw we now know that hes got problems hitting, putting up a <700 OPS this year. So many prospects bust out in their first two years of organizational ball due to injury or suck, and are still two years from the bigs. Why if you can gain that knowledge would you prefer a crapshoot on both getting a nonprotected team to sign Holliday, and on the players you draft?

I can assure you, I am well acquainted with how baseball works and prospects chances of making the show, etc.

I was not implying that you didn't...
however, I think knowing what I wrote above it is impossible to come to the conclusion that if the prospects that are to be acquired are not both elite and MLB ready does not preclude the value of the prospects traded to the A’s being >>> than unknown 2 draft picks. The A’s need good players in 2012 too and they need good trade chips.
I agree that if the A’s don’t get a good package they shouldn’t trade Holliday. I would rather have every package that was brought up in my Possible Trading Partner Series over two draft picks.

I like rebuilding a lot more than most, but I wouldn't caracterize it the way you have
I like contending, I want to contend. When I watch baseball whether it be Park and Rec at the park across the street or at the MLB level I want my team to win. But I hate winning less than 90 games and too many to get a good draft pick while we learn nothing by playing veterans we know cant improve much or turn our team around, which is what we are doing now.
From an intellectual stand point I do enjoy the building of a team, the development of prospects, and trades. I have an economics degree so the combination of baseball and economic theory is something that fascinates me. I think that I may create the impression that I don’t care about winning because I have been against trying to contend for most of the time that I have been posting on AN. The reason for that isn’t that I don’t want to contend. It is rather due to my firm belief that the A’s have gaping holes as a team and just aren’t very good right now. I also believe that it is impossible to always reload and that complete tear downs done right improve the rate at which a return to real contention for a WS can be made. I would rather be the Rays than the Giants. Furthermore, I believe the expected value (using the economic term of art) of the moves needed to make a legitimate attempt to contend are not positive, and when that changes I will advocate for trading prospects/signing players for winning now.

They are both bullshit until there is some sort of solid idea of what a team would be willing to give up in order to get Holliday.
My thought is this… if you get two high upside Single A guys for Holliday, who flippin cares? If it isn’t two guys who are in the high minors and ready to rock at positions of need… take the gamble.

I guess my position is that
in the best of all worlds you get two high upside guys in the draft who don’t flame out before High A, which a lot of draft picks do. In the best of all worlds you get two prospects who I already know haven’t flamed out by high A, will be MLB ready sooner, I don’t have to pay millions in bonus money to, and I have much more control over which prospects are available. I don’t see the downside unless the prospects are not high upside low minors guys.

I think the demand sounds about right
If the A’s keep him and he signs somewhere else that will likely lead to a late 1st round pick and an early supplemental. Picks in this range generally yield fairly good prospects, any potential trade should yield at least two prospects of pretty high quality or else just hold on to him.

Does anyone believe Beane will try to re-sign Holliday
to a multiyear deal?
I think Billy wants to keep him around while the Oakland pitchers continue their journey through the developmental stages of the MLB ranks.
The backup plans seems to be offering Matt arbitration and taking picks if they don’t get their demands met…

I think Billy would probably like to keep Holliday,
and that Holliday probably would not like to keep Oakland.

Holliday doesn't even want to play in oakland today, let alone in 2010 and beyond
Billy is in a comfortable position. He knows Matt will not except arb and the .0000000001% chance he did, we could afford him without a problem, but there is no way Holliday accepts. Billy know’s he getting a sandwich pick + a 1st or 2nd rounder depending on what team signs him (my guess is the mets so probably 1st rounder). Billy can sit, not worry about and call what he wants, if GMs balk at it…who cares. He is in the driver’s seat on this one and other GMs know it.

Then what kind of numbers do you think Holliday is looking for contract wise?
3yr, 5 yr, 7 yr deals???
"Where's the beef?"
by MMunoz33 on Jul 4, 2009 8:20 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
probably a 3 year deal with a player option for 4
but my guess is he doesn’t get a player 4th year option, probably a club option. But I doubt he gets a 5+ year deal in the current state of the economy + it will probably be better for him to be a free agent in 3 years.
by ryanmoser on Jul 4, 2009 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The irony is that the A's will probably be able to afford to match
the best 3 year offer. And Holliday probably won’t accept even if they do.

Honestly, I could see that.
When the Yankees don’t make the playoffs this year, again, they’ll sign Holliday and then go with an OF of Holliday-Melky-Swisher.

Don't be so sure.
I’m not sure the market’s going to offer a lot of Teixeira-like contracts this offseason, and if Holliday ends up hitting .270 with 16 homers (which is where he’s currently headed), $12M in arbitration is going to start sounding pretty good.

Where are you getting that arby award?
$16 m seems far far more likely to me.

You might be right.
I know he has to get at least 80% of his current $13.5M, and I figured that based on this year’s performance, he might not win much of an award. That may well be a big huge case of rose-colored glasses on my part. If you’re right, it makes it all the more compelling for him to take arby if offered.

The other side of that coin
is that the A’s could get scared about offering it to him and really feel like they need to move him this year. I hope that doesn’t happen, or we’ll have Harden deal 2.0.

Based on the current payroll
Unless they have big plans for that money next year, I’d be surprised if a 1 yr 16 million deal would frighten them.

No thanks
Best case is that someone gets desperate for a bat and trades an elite prospect or two to get Holliday.

I think the best case is he mashes next year on an arby deal so we get super elite awesomeness via trade
and can propel the team till Cardenas/Dolittle/Carter are ready to take over and destroy round white objects with red stitching.

Too much risk
If he sucks again on an arbitration deal not only will we completely lose any kind of trade value for him, but he might not even be a Type A FA the next offseason (and would likely just keep taking arbitration). Paying $15 mil for a mediocre hitter doesn’t sound like a good idea. Trade him now, or hopefully he walks after the season, preferably to the team with the 16th-worst record in the league.

Holliday
First he is not dogging it but he is tired. His bat speed is way down because of never having a day off. Geren doesn’t rest players and tires them out. Look at how when Sweeney came back his bat speed was there same with Ellis.
Second if Holliday goes to arbitration he knows that his pay will go down so no on arbitration. He wants to play for a winner and it hurts him to see the rockies win and the A’s struggle.

Holliday started 157 games in LF in '07
139 in ‘08, but he did miss time due to something if I’m right.

I would do terrible things for Yunel,
but the Braves would be extremely stupid to accept that deal. Could happen though.
by Elston Gunn on Jul 5, 2009 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Depends on their options at SS.
Garrett Anderson ain’t the answer in LF, so they could use holliday as much as anyone else – not to mention they’d be taking him away from the Mets, which also helps. Yunel’s a very good young player – which makes it seem like a fair trade.
Do you know the way to San Jose?
